Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. If the ball hits the side of the table, it is considered good.

Answer: False

The International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) rule 2.1.2 says: "The playing surface shall not include the vertical sides of the tabletop". If the ball touches the edge of the table, it must bounce up to be considered good.
2. Which one of these companies does NOT make table tennis equipment?

Answer: Wilson

Butterfly, Nittaku, Schildkrot are other equipment manufacturers. Wilson makes tennis related products.
3. Some higher level players like to reglue the rubbers on their paddle before every match. Which of the following statements can NOT be applied to describe this special glue?

Answer: Applying special glue greatly improves the control over the opponent's shots.

Speed glue is used by players who want to improve the speed of their game. The downside is that the control over the ball is reduced, the paddle becoming more sensitive to spin as it becomes faster.
4. On a typical paddle, what is the name of the layer between the blade and the rubber?

Answer: Sponge

The thickness of the sponge greatly influences the characteristics of the paddle: thicker sponge provides more speed while thinner sponge provides more control.
5. According to the rules of the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF), the paddle must have a RED side AND a BLACK side.

Answer: True

The ITTF law (2.4.6) states: "The surface of the covering material on a side of the blade [...] shall be matt, bright red on one side and black on the other". So if your paddle has green or blue rubbers, you must change them in order to be allowed to play in competition.
6. Which one of those is not a table tennis shot?

Answer: pop

Looping is putting top spin on the ball and chopping is the reverse spin (back spin). Smashing is, well, hitting the ball as hard as you can (and preferably on the table). A pop is nothing but a pop.
7. What is the other main blade type, with Shakehand?

Answer: Penhold

If you hold your paddle like you're shaking someone's hand, then you are a "Shakehander". If you hold your paddle like you are holding a pen, then you are a "Penholder". The "Penholder" grip is most popular amongst Asian players.
8. Which one of the following players was never a Table Tennis World Champion?

Answer: They all won a World Championship title.

Frenchman Jean-Philippe GATIEN won the World Championships in 1993, Swedish PERSSON in 1991 (after being a runner-up in 1989) and WALDNER won twice in 1989 and 1997.
9. According to the ITTF rules, how high must you throw the ball in the air to start a service in order for the service to be considered legal?

Answer: 16 cm (6.3 inches)

The complete ITTF law 2.6.2 says: "The server shall project the ball near vertically upwards, without imparting spin, so that it rises at least 16cm after leaving the palm of the free hand and then falls without touching anything before being struck."
10. If you put some backspin effect in the ball and your opponent hits it flat and forward, the ball will:

Answer: go into the net

To return a backspin shot, you must either hit the ball under and lift it up and forward (better if you give your own backspin) or make a strong loop (top spin).
