Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which Hall of Fame umpire was nicknamed "Jocko"?

Answer: John Conlan

Conlan was a Chicago White Sox outfielder for two seasons in 1934 and 1935. He became a National League umpire in 1941 and worked five World Series during his 25-season umpiring career. Jocko was inducted into the Hall in 1974 while becoming the fourth umpire ever inducted behind Bill Klem, Tom Connolly, and Billy Evans.
2. Boston Red Sox slugger Ted Williams was the final .400 batter in the American League during the 20th Century. Who was the final National League batter to hit .400 during the century?

Answer: Bill Terry

The others never batted .350 in their career. Rogers Hornsby of the Cardinals batted over .400 three times in the 1920s. Bill Terry was a New York Giant from 1923-1936. Bill batted .401 in 1930 to win the NL batting crown ahead of Brooklyn's Babe Herman and his .393 average.

It was Terry's best season by far as he topped his previous season high of .372 in 1929. Unfortunately for Terry, there was no MVP Award given out in 1930 due to conflicts between the leagues for presentation of the award.
3. In the 2000s decade (from 2000-2009), the New York Yankees won two World Series titles. Which other team won two World Series in that decade?

Answer: Boston Red Sox

Not only did the other options not win two World Series, they didn't even make an appearance in the decade. The Red Sox came out on top in a big way in 2004 by putting down the Cardinals four games to none. Boston was back in it again in 2007 and it resulted in another skunking with the Colorado Rockies being on the receiving end.

The Red Sox were under the helm of Terry Francona in both seasons.
4. Which Major League team was the first to have 1,000,000 fans in attendance for five consecutive seasons?

Answer: New York Yankees

Some fans might be surprised to know that this didn't happen recently. The Yankees began this five-season attendance record run in 1920 upon the arrival of Babe Ruth from the 1919 Red Sox. In 1919 the Yankees had a season attendance of 619,164. In 1920 the number more than doubled to 1,289,422.

In 1925 the team finally fell below the one million mark with just under 700,000; but then topped the one million mark again for the next three consecutive seasons.
5. Which Hall of Famer was nicknamed "Big Dan"?

Answer: Dennis Joseph Brouthers

Brouthers played for 17 seasons in the National League, one in the Players League, and one in the American Association all from 1879-1904. Dan was recognized as one of the first good bats in early baseball. He won five batting titles and retired with a .342 average while hitting 106 home runs.

He played for 10 teams in his career and watched seven of them go defunct. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1945.
6. It happens but unfortunately a good baseball player is remembered for one negative play in his entire career. Case in point is Bill Buckner of the Red Sox in the 1986 World Series. In the bottom of the 10th inning in game six, a batted ball rolled through his legs at first base which allowed a run to score and the Mets won the game. Who was the pitcher that previously allowed that runner to advance a base on a wild pitch before the "Buckner Incident"?

Answer: Bob Stanley

The other options were long retired before 1986 and were pitchers. The batter was Mookie Wilson and the runner was Ray Knight. Stanley replaced Calvin Schiraldi in the bottom of the 10th with two outs. With Kevin Mitchell on third and Ray Knight on first, Stanley threw a wild pitch to Wilson which allowed Mitchell to score and Knight went to second base. Wilson hit a wobbler to first base and it bounced through the legs of Buckner and into right field. Boston fans watched in horror as Knight scored and the Mets won the game 6-5.

The following game the Mets would win the World Series four games to three.
7. In 2016, San Diego Padre pitcher Brad Hand led all Major League pitchers by showing his endurance and appearing in 82 games. The Padres got Hand off waivers from which National League team after the 2015 season?

Answer: Miami Marlins

The others were all American League teams in 2015. Brad pitched in five seasons for the Marlins before they let him go. Hand had appeared in a career high 38 games for Miami in 2015. The Padres who got a tremendous deal, used Brad as a setup man and in relief in 2016. He pitched in 89.1 innings and struck out 111 batters in the clutch.
8. Who was the very first second baseman in history to win a season MVP Award?

Answer: Larry Doyle

The others listed were not infielders. Doyle was a career second baseman in 13 of 14 seasons with the New York Giants from 1907-1920. In every single game that he played, it was at second base. He won the second NL MVP Award ever presented in 1912 for his 184 hits and batting .330 in the season.

He won the award over shortstop Honus Wagner of the Pirates by only five votes. Nicknamed "Laughing Larry", he also won the 1915 batting title but there was no MVP presented from 1915-1923 because of conflicts between the American and National Leagues concerning the award.
9. Which manager was selected as the 2016 National League Manager of the Year?

Answer: Dave Roberts

The others all managed the three worst teams in the National League in 2016 with only 68 wins. Roberts was a rookie manager for the Los Angeles Dodgers, but yet put up with and balanced a record number of players on the disabled list during the season.

He managed the San Diego Padres for one game in 2015, then took over the Dodgers in 2016 and led them to a 91-71 record winning the NL West Division. Roberts received 108 votes for the award versus 70 votes for runner-up Joe Maddon of the Cubs. Roberts had a record 28 players on the disabled list including Dodger star pitcher Clayton Kershaw. With his coaching staff and bevy of talent, including Rookie of the Year Corey Seager, Roberts took his team to the NLCS but lost to the Cubs.
10. In which season did the Los Angeles Angels change their name to the California Angels?

Answer: 1965

The Angels didn't become an expansion team in the American League until 1961. They played at the Los Angeles Coliseum until Dodger Stadium was done being built in 1962 and shared the stadium with them. The Angels were never really put on the map until future Hall of Fame great Nolan Ryan was with them from 1972-1979.

The franchise took until 2008 to win 100 games in a season and then lost the ALDS to the Red Sox three games to one.
