Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Should you aim before you anchor?

Answer: No

If you aim before you anchor, then your aim could be changed when your anchor is in place. It is best to anchor, make sure that your anchor is firm, and then aim.
2. What type of footwear is not recommended when shooting?

Answer: thongs

Sandals are also not recommended when shooting. Thongs and sandals are open, or have holes in them, and if an arrow is dropped it could injure you.
3. On a target archery target, how many points does the gold or yellow give.

Answer: 9 and 10

The scoring zones are: White: 1 and 2, Black: 3 and 4, Blue: 5 and 6, Red: 7 and 8, Gold: 9 and 10.

X is also a gold scoring zone, but it still gives 10 points.
4. What is dry firing?

Answer: drawing and releasing without an arrow in the bow

Dry firing is bad for the bow limbs. One of the first things a beginner is taught is not to fire the bow without an arrow in it.
5. What is another name for the handle of a recurve bow?

Answer: riser

The riser is what the sight, if the archer is not shooting barebow, is mounted on. It is also where the bow is held and for some bows has a stabilizer mounted on it.
6. Other than protection, what is a chest guard used for?

Answer: to stop the string from catching on the shirt as it is released

If the string catches on the shirt as it goes past, the power or aim of the bow could be slightly altered. In beginner archery it is mainly females who are encouraged to wear chest guards, for the obvious reasons, but as males progress they are often encouraged to wear them as well.
7. What is another name for the fletches on an arrow?

Answer: vanes

Piles are another name for the points of the arrow. Cresting I am not going to tell you, because that is in the next question, and nocks are the parts that clip on to the string.
8. The cresting on an arrow is coloured bands around the stem. Often used for identification.

Answer: True

The cresting comes in handy when two archers with the same colour fletches, and arrow stems are shooting on the same target.
9. If your arrows are dropping low, where should you move your sight?

Answer: down

If you move your sight down, when the arrows drop low, it will cause you to aim higher to put the sight pin in the middle of the target.
10. Which of these is not a type of bow?

Answer: curvybow

A long bow is pretty long. If you are shooting longbow your arrows and bow would most likely be made of wood. A recurve bow is probably the most common type of bow and is the only one allowed in the main section of the Olympics. Recurves may have a sight or not. If not, it is called barebow.

A compound bow has wheels and pulleys at the end of each limb. The idea behind the bow is that normal poundage is needed until about half way through the draw and then the pressure lets up making it easier to hold at full draw and aim.
