Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 2005, South African wing Tonderai Chavanga scored six tries in a test match against which country?

Answer: Uruguay

The test match was played at the Buffalo City Stadium in the city of East London in 2005. The end score in this match, which saw Chavanga score six tries, was 134-3. Tonderai Chavanga, born in Zimbabwe, was a member of the Western Province and Stormers rugby team at the time. He played for the Sharks, Cheetahs, Lions as well as the Welsh side Newport Gwent Dragons in his career.
2. In the 1999 World Cup, South African flyhalf Jannie de Beer slotted five drop goals to knock England out of the World Cup in the quarter finals. South Africa was then undone by a drop kick from which Australian flyhalf in extra time in the semi final match?

Answer: Stephen Larkham

Stephen Larkham played 102 test matches for Australia. Initially drafted into the Australian squad as a fullback, coach Rod Macqueen switched him to flyhalf. Australia won the 1999 World Cup and Larkham's 48 meter drop kick in extra time helped to beat South Africa in the semi final. Two factors made this drop kick quite a "miracle kick"; Larkham had very bad eyesight and could not see the posts clearly.

He also had a badly injured knee at the time.
3. John Eales played 86 test matches for Australia and amassed 173 points in his career. He scored two tries and kicked 34 penalties and 31 conversions. Why was this remarkable?

Answer: He was a lock forward

John Eales played his 86 test matches over a ten year period between 1991 and 2001. Although being a tight forward as the designated place kicker in a team was not a unique achievement, Okey Geffin (prop) and Tiny Naude (lock) performed this role for South Africa in the 1950s and 1960s respectively, he was the first tight forward to perform this role for Australia in the modern era.
4. Jonah Lomu, the New Zealand left wing, scored four tries in the 1995 World Cup semi final match between England and New Zealand. He trampled over the England fullback to score one of these tries, knocking the man onto his back. Who was this unfortunate player?

Answer: Mike Catt

Mike Catt, was born in Port Elizabeth South Africa and qualified to play for the England team due to his English mother. This is Catt's description of that moment:

"I first felt his left knee, knocking me backwards off my feet," Catt said. "Next came his right and I went from my backside onto my back with the force of the collision.

"I grasped for something to hold on to. But he was over the top of me, those tree-trunk legs pumping like pistons. And then it was over."

Sadly, Jonah Lomu passed away at the age of 40 following a heart attack.
5. Which former New Zealand rugby captain had part of his ear bitten off by South African rugby player Johan le Roux in a 1994 test match between the two countries?

Answer: Sean Fitzpatrick

Johan le Roux, the South African prop in the 1994 test match against New Zealand, was banned for 18 months for biting Fitzpatrick's ear. He was quoted as saying, "For an 18-month suspension, I feel I probably should have torn it off. Then at least I could say: 'Look, I've returned to South Africa with the guy's ear.'" He served his suspension and was selected for a match in 1996.

In this match he was suspended for seven weeks for a headbut. He never played for South Africa again.
6. Which "minnows" of world rugby achieved the amazing feat of beating two World Cup champions in consecutive major competitions, the 2015 Rugby World Cup and the 2016 Rio Olympics Sevens competition?

Answer: Japan

Japan stunned South Africa in their pool match of the 2015 Rugby World Cup, by beating them 34 - 32. South Africa ultimately went on to end in third place in the World Cup and Japan, despite winning three of their four pool matches, did not advance to the quarter finals. Japan went on to stun New Zealand in their pool match in the 2016 Rio Olympics Sevens competition, by beating them 14 - 12. New Zealand have been the world champions in sevens rugby, twelve times since the 1999-2000 season.
7. In the 2003 Rugby World Cup, Australia beat Namibia with a resounding 142-0 score. Twenty two tries were scored by the Australians, with Lote Tuqiri and Matt Giteau scoring a hat-trick each. How many tries did the Aussie fullback, Chris Latham, score in the match?

Answer: 5

Chris Latham scored five tries in the match. This score line was the the biggest in a World Cup since New Zealand beat Japan 145-17 in the 1995 World Cup. The 2003 World Cup was eventually won by England, thanks to a Johnny Wilkinson drop goal in extra time.
8. Namibia played in five Rugby World Cups from 1999-2015. What have they never managed to do in the nineteen world cup matches they played?

Answer: Win

Unfortunately, Namibia did not manage a victory in those five world cups. Statistically the 2015 world cup was their best, with more points for and less points against. The team managed to win the IRB Nations Cup in 2010, but struggled in the South African domestic competition, the "Vodacom Cup" in 2015, only managing one win.
9. What is the name of the invitational rugby side for which players from different countries are invited to join? Their traditional colours are black and white hooped shirts, black shorts and players play with their home team socks.

Answer: Barbarians

The Barbarian Football Club, or Baa-Baas as they are nicknamed, are based in Britain. Players are invited to join the team and matches have been played by the Barbarians since 1890. Notable players to have been included in the Baa-Baas squad throughout the years have been David Campese (Australia), Zinzan Brooke (New Zealand) and Victor Matfield (South Africa).
10. Which Welsh fly-half was the first player in rugby history to score 1,000 points in international rugby matches?

Answer: Neil Jenkins

Neil Jenkins played for Wales from 1991-2003, capped 87 times and scoring 1049 points. He broke the 1,000 point mark in spectacular style against France in 2001. He scored a try, kicked conversions, penalties and a dropkick for a personal total of 28 points. Jenkins was capped four times for the British and Irish Lions too.
