Scotty Bowman had an amazing NHL coaching career, winning 223 Stanley Cup playoff matches and nine Stanley Cup titles. Bowman started his career with the St. Louis Blues, winning 110 regular season games with the expansion Blues in four seasons. He left St. Louis after the 1971 season to join the Montreal Canadiens for the 1971-72 campaign. Bowman also coached for Buffalo, Pittsburgh, and Detroit. Bowman was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1991.

George "Punch" Imlach was a legendary NHL coach from 1958 to 1980. His Maple Leaf teams captured four Stanley Cup titles during the 1960s. Imlach was a disciplinarian whose abrasive manner sometimes alienated his players. He enjoyed working with veteran players and was sometimes criticized for trading away young draft prospects. Imlach also coached briefly for the Buffalo Sabres.

He was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1984.
