Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the 1960s, this American League team won 103 games in the season which set a new franchise record for wins. It rostered players such as Norm Cash, Bill Freehan, Dick McAuliffe, Denny McLain, and Mickey Lolich. Which team was it?

Answer: Detroit Tigers

1968 was the season, and it was the year of pitcher Denny McLain of the Tigers. Denny went 31-6 for the season. With one more great season in him for 1969, gambling issues ruined his career as he retired as a Washington Senator. The Tigers went to the World Series against Bob Gibson's St. Louis Cardinals.

The Tigers won four games to three. It was the Tigers' first World Series appearance in 23 years.
2. Which 2005 NL team filled their uniforms with Pat Burrell, Jimmy Rollins, Ryan Howard, Chase Utley, and Jon Lieber?

Answer: Phillies

The Phillies went 88-74 for a second place finish in the NL East. This had been the team's highest win total in 12 seasons. Burrell led the team with 32 home runs, and Lieber won 17 games.
3. The team that rostered Tommy Harper, Wayne Comer, Tommy Davis, Gene Brabender, and Steve Barber, only lasted for one season in professional baseball. Which team was it?

Answer: 1969 Seattle Pilots

The 1969 Pilots didn't make a good impression in their city, winning only 64 games in the season. The team quietly packed their bags and moved to Milwaukee to become the Brewers of the American League in 1970. The franchise moved to the National League in 1998. In the first 35 years of existence, the team failed to win more than 95 games in a season.
4. Which 1997 team had names such as Jose Canseco, Mark McGwire, Scott Brosius, Aaron Small, and Brent Mayne?

Answer: Athletics

The 1997 Oakland Athletics won only 65 games in the season. After playing in 105 games during the season, McGwire was traded to the Cardinals for three players. In his first full season with St. Louis, Mark hit 70 home runs.
5. Which World Series winning team in the 1920s rostered Jimmie Foxx, Al Simmons, Mickey Cochrane, Lefty Grove, and Rube Walberg?

Answer: Philadelphia Athletics

This team was the 1929 Philadelphia Athletics, who went 104-46 to win the American League. They defeated the Cubs in the World Series four games to one. Ironically, Ty Cobb had retired the season prior with the Athletics.
6. This 1998 NL team rostered Greg Vaughn, Steve Finley, Ken Caminiti, Tony Gwynn, and Kevin Brown. Which team was this that went to the World Series?

Answer: San Diego Padres

Gwynn was a career Padre. 1998 was also Caminiti's final season in San Diego. After winning the NL West, they defeated the Astros and Braves before losing the World Series to the Yankees. Kevin Brown led the pitching staff with a 18-7 season record. Vaughn banged out 50 home runs in the season.
7. Which American League team in the 1950s had Eddie Gaedel, Ray Coleman, Ken Wood, Jim Delsing, and pitcher Ned Garver on it?

Answer: St. Louis Browns

Eddie Gaedel appeared in only one game in his career. In 1951, the dwarf showed up at home plate to pinch-hit. In another of owner Bill Veeck's stunts, Gaedel walked on four pitches, thus not even giving little Eddie an official at-bat. The Browns moved to Baltimore to become the Orioles in 1954.
8. This 1971 team had a tremendous pitching staff. With four starters reaching the 20-win mark each, which team was this who rostered Jim Palmer, Dave McNally, Pat Dobson, Mike Cuellar, and Brooks Robinson?

Answer: Baltimore Orioles

McNally won 21 games in 1971. The other pitchers listed all won 20 each. Brooks Robinson, the Orioles third baseman, led the team with 160 hits. The Orioles went to the World Series after easily defeating the Athletics in the ALCS, but lost to the Pirates four games to three in the series.
9. This 2005 NL team saw players in the names of Livan Hernandez, Jose Guillen, Cristian Guzman, Vinny Castilla, and Wil Cordero. Which team was this?

Answer: Washington Nationals

This was the first season for the Nationals of Washington. From 1969-2004, the franchise was in Montreal playing with the name of Expos. The Nationals finished at .500 with a 81-81 record. Although finishing in last place in the NL East, they were only nine games behind their division winning Braves.
10. This 1997 team rostered Gary Sheffield, Luis Castillo, Bobby Bonilla, Moises Alou, and Alex Fernandez. Which unform did they all wear in the same season?

Answer: Florida Marlins

The 1997 Florida Marlins won the franchise's first World Series after only five seasons of existence. They defeated the Indians four games to three, and Marlin Livan Hernandez was the series MVP.
