5. What team had the lowest payroll out of all NHL teams in the 2002-03 season?

Answer: Minnesota Wild

This Wild bunch surprised everyone in the 2003 playoffs. They themselves only expected to win one game, at the most, and would have been perfectly content with that. Which was a bit of an understatement: the Wild overcame two 3-1 deficits to wipe away the Colorado Avalanche and Vancouver Canucks in the Western Conference quarter-finals and semi-finals.

They were finally swept by the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim in the Western Conference finals.
6. This team's first season was 1974-75. They had 92 points in the 2002-03 season, placing them 6th in the Eastern Conference. Jaromir Jagr, their star of the season, had 77 points.

Answer: Washington Capitals

Tampa Bay beat Washington in the Eastern Conference quarter-finals in 2003. Although the Capitals had never won the Stanley Cup in the 70s, 80s or 90s, they were once in the finals in 1998. They were beaten by the Detroit Red Wings.
7. This team was founded on September 25, 1926. On that date, the NHL awarded a franchise to Major Frederic McLaughlin. He purchased the Portland Rose Buds from the Western Hockey League and moved them to a new American city, where this team can be found today. McLaughlin also changed the name of the team.

Answer: Chicago Blackhawks

Major Frederic McLaughlin found his inspiration for the team name, the Blackhawks, from the name that the members of his division in World War 1 gave themselves (the Black Hawks). His division in the war had named themselves in honor of the Sauk Indian chief who sided with the British in the War of 1812.
8. In the 2002-03 season, this team placed first in their division, third in the Eastern Conference. Some of their star players included defenseman Dan Boyle, goalie Nikolai Khabibulin, center Vincent Lecavalier, right wing Vaclav Prospal, center Brad Richards, and right wing Martin St. Louis.

Answer: Lightning

Tampa Bay defeated the Washington Capitals in the Eastern Conference quarterfinals of the 2003 playoffs. They were then defeated in the second round by the New Jersey Devils. Tampa Bay had secured the third seed with 93 points- 15 less than the second-seeded Devils. Tampa Bay was 36-25-16-5 in the regular season.
9. Which team's tradition and good luck charm is the throwing of octopi (plural for octopus) onto the ice?

Answer: Detroit

The Red Wings' tradition started on April 15, 1952 during the Stanley Cup playoffs. Pete and Jerry Cusimano, brothers from Detroit, threw an octopus onto the ice. Each tentacle was supposed to symbolize a win in the playoffs. (Since there were only 6 teams at the time, it only took 8 wins to win the Cup: 2 best-of-seven series).

The Red Wings ended up winning the Stanley Cup that year, so the octupus tradition became a good luck charm.
10. The youngest team in the League for the 2002-03 season was _______ ?

Answer: Florida Panthers

The Panthers finished with the fourth worst record in the NHL in the 2002-03 season, with 24 wins, 36 losses, 13 ties, and 9 overtime losses. Having such a poor record did have 1 benefit though: they were awarded the Number 1 pick in June 2003's entry draft.
11. This team's famous "AMP" line was perhaps the hottest line in the NHL in the latter part of the 2002-03 season. Its members, Alex Tanguay, Peter Forsberg, and Milan Hejduk, combined for 59 goals and 90 assists in just the final 37 games. What team is this line on?

Answer: Colorado Avalanche

During those 37 games in which the AMP line performed so amazingly, the Avalanche went 25-5-4-3. Forsberg contributed 14 of the goals and 43 assists; Hejduk, 26 goals and 22 assists; and Tanguay, 19 goals and 25 assists. Tanguay also had the longest point streak in the NHL during the 2002-03 season: 16 games. Each member of the line scored atleast 1 hat trick.

The AMP line is named after the player's first 3 names- Alex, Milan, and Peter. It was put together in January 2003 when Joe Sakic was injured. Tanguay took Sakic's place, but even after Sakic was back, the line was so great that it wasn't broken up.

Pearson Award (3 times), Hart Trophy (3), Art Ross Trophy (6), Dodge NHL Performer of the Year (2), Conn Smythe Trophy (2), and the Masterton Trophy.

He also holds numerous records. Unfortunately, Lemieux's career was also plagued with many injuries. (For more information, visit the Pittsburgh Penguins' website.)
15. In 2003, this Cinderella-story team just skimmed the Cup. They made it to the Finals, coming so close, but losing 3-0 in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals. They are the _________ ?

Answer: Mighty Ducks

No one would have guessed that the seventh-seeded Mighty Ducks of Anaheim would even come close to winning the Cup. They must have overlooked the amazing powers of goalie J.S. Giguere and the awesome stick-handling of left wing Paul Kariya. And that's just to mention two of the Ducks talented players.

The Ducks swept the defending champions the Detroit Red Wings in the first round, won the series against Dallas 4-2, and swept the Minnesota Wild in the Western Conference finals, before finally being defeated by the Devils in a 4-3 series.

His awards are as follows: Stanley Cup (4), Canada Cup (3), Art Ross Trophy (10), Hart Memorial Trophy (9), Conn Smythe Trophy (2), Lester B. Pearson Award (5), Lady Byng Memorial Trophy (5), Lester Patrick Trophy (1), NHL First All-Star Team (8), NHL Second All-Star Team (7), NHL All-Star Game MVP (3), IOC Olympic Order (1). Gretzky is obviously, also in the Hockey Hall of Fame.

He officially announced his retirement on April 16, 1999. His number, 99 has been retired across the NHL. I still feel like I'm leaving tons out, but I'm beginning to feel a bit faint from typing all of that!
17. What team did Eric Lindros, Mark Messier, Petr Nedved, Matthew Barnaby, Pavel Bure, Alexi Kovalev and Brian Leetch play for in 2002-03?

Answer: rangers

Despite their showcase of talented players, this Original 6 team was 32-36-10-4 in 2002-03. That placed them as ninth in the Eastern Conference, just short of making the playoffs. I suppose they don't have the worst record, but 78 points isn't necessarily something to brag about either.

Answer: Calgary Flames

The Calgary Flames moved to Calgary from Atlanta on May 21, 1980. In 1989 they won the Stanley Cup. However, in the following season (2002-03) the Hurricanes finished last in the whole league with 61 points. Their record was 22-43-11-6.
20. Which team were the 2003 Stanley Cup champions?

Answer: Devils

The Devils had won the Cup in 1995 and 2000. They made it to the Finals without winning one other time: in 2001, the Avalanche came back from a 3-2 deficit and won the Stanley Cup in Game 7.
21. Which team finished fourth in the Western Conference in the 2002-03 season? They were second in the Northwest Division.

Answer: Vancouver Canucks

Vancouver nearly placed first in the Northwest Division but ended up losing by just one point to the Colorado Avalanche, ending with 104 points. On the very last game was when the Canucks lost their lead, when they lost 2-0 to the Los Angeles Kings while meanwhile, the Avs beat the Blues 5-2.

Answer: Islanders

The Coliseum, seating 18,000, opened on May 29, 1972. It is 460 feet long, 340 feet wide, and 75 feet tall. The Coliseum cost 32 million dollars to build. The Islanders' first season was 1972-73.
24. This team considers its more golden years the 1940s, when they won 5 Stanley Cups, 3 in consecutive years. The 1980s were considered their "dark years." What team is it?

Answer: Toronto

In the 1970s 80s and 90s they haven't didn't made an appearance in the finals. Although not in the Cup Finals, the Maple Leafs still haven't been completely out of the playoff loop: they were in the 2002-03 playoffs as the fifth seed, but were knocked out by the Flyers in the first round. So yeah, the Leafs journey back to better status kind of began in 1985 when they drafted Wendel Clark, their first-round pick. Things have gotten a bit better, but this Original 6 team has still seen better days.
25. In May 2003, the _________ acquired goalie Roman Cechmanek from the Philadelphia Flyers?

In exchange for Cechmanek the Kings traded a second-round choice in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft.
