Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Montreal Amateur Athletic Association were the first team to be victorious in winning the Stanley Cup. Which of the following teams became the second team to win the cup in 1894-95?

Answer: Montreal Victorias

The Montreal Amateur Athletic Association (AAA) would win the first two Stanley Cup contests in 1892-93 and 1893-94. In 1894-95, under very unusual circumstances, the Victorias would win their first Stanley Cup. Stanley Cup trustees up to this point had already scheduled a contest between the Montreal AAA and Queen's University.

As the Victoria's finished first in Amateur Hockey Association (AHA), cup trustees determined that in fairness of the Victoria's, if the Montreal AAA defeated Queen's University, the Victoria's would win the cup.

As it turned out, the Montreal AAA would defeat Queen's University 5-1 allowing the Victoria's their very first Stanley Cup.
2. During the pre-NHL era, which of the following cities was the smallest city (population wise) to win Lord Stanley's cup?

Answer: Kenora

The Kenora (Rat Portage) Thistles would win their only Stanley Cup in January 1906-07. With a population of only 4000, Kenora would go down in history as not only the smallest town to win a cup during the pre-NHL era, but as the smallest city to win the Stanley Cup during the entire 20th Century. They would defeat the Montreal Wanderers in game one 4-2, and game two 8-6.
3. Which of the following teams would become the first non-Canadian team to win the Stanley Cup?

Answer: Seattle Metropolitans

The Seattle Metropolitans would defeat the Montreal Canadians in a best of five series during the 1916-17 Stanley Cup playoffs. This particular series was not only historical because of the first ever victorious American city, but, this would mark the last time a Stanley Cup was won during the pre-NHL era. Following the 1916-17 year, the National Hockey Association would dissolve, making way for the newly formed National Hockey League (NHL).
4. In one series, the Ottawa Senators would defend their Stanley Cup against the Winnipeg Rowing Club at the Aberdeen Pavillion in Ottawa. What was so significant about this particular series?

Answer: This was the first time goal lines were actually used in a game

Both the Ottawa Senators and the Winnipeg Rowing Club agreed that in order to aid the referee in making decisions regarding goal scoring, a line should be painted from goalpost to goalpost. Both sides did paint goal lines marking the first time goal lines were used during a professional hockey game.
5. The 1895-96 Stanley Cup playoffs will forever be known as the first east vs. west competition. What two teams would face off in a one game series to determine who would become champion that year?

Answer: Winnipeg and Montreal

This one game series would be the first time that a team from Eastern Canada would match up against a team from Eastern Canada. The Winnipeg Victoria's would go on to defeat the Montreal Victoria's 2-0. Hall of Famer Dan Bain would score one of the goals during Winnipeg's victory.
6. Which of the following pre-NHL Stanley Cup winning cities was infamous for having a bulldog included in their team photos?

Answer: Quebec

The Quebec Bulldogs would win two Stanley Cup's during the pre-NHL era in 1911-12 and 1912-13. They would be led by Hall of Famer Joe Malone who would eventually earn his claim to fame as becoming the only player during NHL era of the 20th Century to score seven goals in a game.
7. The Montreal Canadians would go on to win 23 Stanley Cups during the 20th century in the NHL era. How many Stanley Cups would the Canadians win during the pre-NHL era?

Answer: 1

The only time the Montreal Canadians won the Stanley Cup during the pre-NHL era was during the 1915-16 season. This series would be historical as it was the first time in Stanley Cup history in which a best of five series actually needed all five games to be played in order to determine a winner.

The Montreal Canadians would edge the Portland Rosebuds three games to two in winning their first ever Stanley Cup.
8. The first Stanley Cup contest to ever be played on artificial ice was played in which of the following cities?

Answer: Toronto

In 1913-14, the Toronto Blueshirts would be victorious in winning Toronto's first Stanley Cup. They would go on to defeat the Montreal Canadians in a best of two (most goals) series by a score of 6-2. Later that year, the Blueshirts would successfully defend their title against Victoria of the Pacific Coast Hockey Association as well.
9. In 1914-15, the Stanley Cup would be won by a team from the West Coast for the first time. Which of the following teams would be the infamous team to accomplish this feat?

Answer: Vancouver Millionaires

The Vancouver Millionaires would go on to defeat the Ottawa Senators in a best of fives series, three games to none. Not only would they sweep the series, the Vancouver Millionnaires would outscore the Senators by a devastating score of 26-8. They would be led by Hall of Famer Fred "Cyclone" Taylor who would score six goals in the series.
10. Which of the following teams did not play in a Stanley Cup series during the pre-NHL era?

Answer: Toronto St. Pats

The Toronto St. Pats would play their first Stanley Cup series during the NHL era and would go on to win their only Stanley Cup in 1921-22. The Klondikers and Eskimos would both have unsuccessful runs at winning a Stanley Cup getting outscored by large margins against their opponents. The Shamrocks would win Stanley Cups in 1899 and 1900.
