Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these players was not a British Lions tourist in 2001?

Answer: Greg Smith

Greg Smith was the captain of the Fijian rugby team. Tom Smith was a Scottish prop, Irishman O'Gara played off the bench occasionally on the tour and well, Wilkinson was pretty obvious as he was the prolific point-scorer on the tour Down Under.
2. Which famous Irish province caused one of the greatest upsets of all time, defeating the 1978 All Blacks on their tour of the British Isles?

Answer: Munster

The All Black team contained such greats as Graham Mourie (captain) and Stu Wilson. No footage of this match was taken as Munster were expected to be slaughtered. Ironic.
3. Which of these players kicked a world record five drop goals in a 1999 World Cup quarter final, knocking England out of the tournament?

Answer: Jannie De Beer

This tally of five drop goals shattered the previously held record of two.
4. Australia won its first ever international match in 1899?

Answer: True

The match was against a British Isles side, played in June 1899 (Austyrlia won 13-3). The 'Australian' team comprised players from New South Wales and Queensland.
5. Which of these teams used an animal symbol for their rugby jerseys?

Answer: Namibia

The Namibians held a picture of an eagle on their jerseys, the English had the rose, the Romanians had the Oak leaf, and the Japanese were widely known as the Cherry Blossoms, depicted on their jerseys.
6. Which of these players sank Australia in the 1995 World Cup quarter final with a last minute drop goal?

Answer: Rob Andrew

Rob Andrew's last minute penalty won England the match by three points. And Barry Dubovsky was not well placed to come anywhere near the international rugby circuit.
7. Which of these following players participated in the first four Rugby World Cups?

Answer: Gareth Rees

Canadian Gareth Rees played in the 1987, 1991, 1995, and 1999 Cups, making the quarterfinals in 1987. John Eales played in three, winning in 1991 and as captain in 1999.
8. 81 nations attempted to qualify for RWC 2003.

Answer: True

AUS, FRA, RSA, NZ, ENG, SCOT, WALES and ARG automatically qualified for making the quarter finals in '99, where the rest had to battle it out in many, many round robin tournaments and qualifiers. Countries ranging from Italy and Ireland, down to Madagascar and the Ivory Coast attempted to qualify.
9. The Irish sang their national anthem before playing a match?

Answer: False

The song "Ireland's Call" was sung, although the nation was divided, rugby draws the north and south together rendering the use of one anthem unfair. "The Soldier's Song" is also sung.
10. A drop goal has always been worth three points.

Answer: False

It was worth four points until 1948.
