1. There are no Major League Baseball teams in Connecticut, but the state capital gained a Minor League team in 2016 with what unusual nickname?

Answer: Hartford Yard Goats

Hartford is the state capital of Connecticut, and, in 2016, a team called the Hartford Yard Goats began play there in the class-AA Eastern League. An affiliate of MLB's Colorado Rockies, the team's unusual nickname has nothing to do with animals, but refers to a small railway locomotive which assembles trains in railroad yards.
2. The Travelers Championship is an annual sporting event held in the Hartford area in which sport?

Answer: Golf

Formerly known as the Greater Hartford Open, the Travelers Championship has been a stop on the PGA tour since 1952. Held at the TPC River Highlands course, south of Hartford, the tournament traditionally attracts some of the biggest galleries on the PGA tour. Previous champions at the event include Sam Snead, Arnold Palmer and Lee Trevino.
3. Born in New Britain, Connecticut, in 1859, which of these people is known as the "Father of American Football"?

Answer: Walter Camp

4. The University of Connecticut (usually known as UConn) has achieved much success on the basketball court in the late 20th/early 21st century, especially in the women's game. Which coach led the Huskies to no fewer than eleven women's national titles between 1995 and 2016?

Answer: Geno Auriemma

The University of Connecticut was founded in Storrs in 1881. The school's basketball squads gained national prominence beginning in the 1990s, with the men's squad winning four national titles between 1999 and 2014, and the women's teams doing even better with eleven national crowns between 1995 and 2016. Geno Auriemma was appointed women's head coach in 1995 to take over a programme that had had only one winning season in their history.

He transformed their fortunes completely as they went on to dominate women's college hoops over the next couple of decades.
5. Barbara Potter, from Waterbury, Connecticut, was a leading player in which sport in the 1980s?

Answer: Tennis

A three-time Wimbledon quarter-finalist, she won six singles titles on the WTA tour, and 19 doubles crowns, mostly with regular partner Sharon Walsh. Injury troubles led to her retirement from the sport in 1989.
6. Yale University, one of the oldest colleges in the USA, play their intercollegiate sports in which conference?

Answer: Ivy League

Yale University was founded in New Haven in 1701, making it the third oldest college in the USA. Although best known for academics, the school still manages to punch above its weight in sports, with the men's lacrosse and ice hockey squads both winning national titles in the 2010s.
7. Julius Boros, from Fairfield, Connecticut, was a leading player in which sport in the 1950s/60s?

Answer: Golf

8. The Hartford Whalers were members of the National Hockey League from 1979 until 1997, when they relocated and became which team?

Answer: Carolina Hurricanes

In 1979, the WHA folded and the team was admitted into the NHL, changing their name to Hartford Whalers at the same time. Poor attendances and the lack of a new arena led the owners to move the team to North Carolina in 1997.

Answer: Welterweight

Marlon Starling was born in Hartford in 1959, and turned pro in 1979. In 1987, he defeated Mark Breland to win the WBA Welterweight title.
