The striking black and gold of the team uniforms reflect the color of their Bengal tiger mascot. In 1999 the university formed a conservation program called Mizzou Tigers for Tigers. Its purpose is to research and preserve tiger habitats around the world.

The Sooner Schooner is a covered wagon commemorating the early settlers who made the 1889 land run on Oklahoma territory, The schooner became the official mascot of the Oklahoma Sooners in 1980 and still is. Boomer and Scooner are costumed characters that are a representation of the ponies of the official mascot and represent the athletic department at sporting, civic and charity events.

Bevo became the University of Texas mascot in 1916 and has been known to occasionally add to the half time entertainment by charging cheerleaders, bands and cars. When Texas A&M left the Big Twelve Conference to join the Southeastern Conference it ended a 118 year rivalry with University of Texas.

Tusk is a Russian Boar and the various boars that have been used as the mascot have weighed as much as 475 pounds. In spite of their great size they have been known to jump over a four feet high gate. Tusk lives on a rural farm and loves to roll in his favorite mud hole. He travels to every home game and will even give autographs by placing an ink stamped hoof on programs or T-Shirts.

This particular color of orange is distinct to the university and is called UT Orange, It is also sold at Home Depot stores as a paint selection.

Originally their colors were blue and yellow but blue and white have been the university's official colors since 1892. At one time a live bobcat named Blue was the team mascot. The Wildcat, a costumed mascot, began to perform at games in 1976 and Scratch, a kid friendly mascot, now appears with him at all the games.

Saluki is an Egyptian dog and one of the oldest dog breeds. It is similar to a grey hound. Legend has it that during a time of great drought in nothern Illinois the Southern part of the state had abundant rain and crops. People from northern Illinois came to Southern Illinois for corn, wheat, and hay. Because of the similarity to the Bible story found in the book of Genesis, where a great drought caused people to come to Egypt for food, the area is often called "Little Egypt".

Hayden Fry was a psychology major and he did not hesitate to try it out on opposing teams. Such as, having the visiting team's locker room painted pink believing it would have a calming effect on their aggressiveness. He left the University of Iowa in 1998 but the opposing team's locker room is still painted pink.

The mythical Jayhawk has been described as a cross between a Blue Jay and a Hawk. The university has been under some pressure to change the name because of its association with the murderous band of guerrillas that terrorized settlers along the Missouri/Kansas border in the late 1850s.

The University of Kansas and Baby Jay their mascot with his red head, blue sweater and big yellow boots doesn't resemble a Blue Jay or a Hawk and certainly isn't very terrorizing.
