The mythical Jayhawk has been described as a cross between a Blue Jay and a Hawk. The university has been under some pressure to change the name because of its association with the murderous band of guerrillas that terrorized settlers along the Missouri/Kansas border in the late 1850s.

The University of Kansas and Baby Jay their mascot with his red head, blue sweater and big yellow boots doesn't resemble a Blue Jay or a Hawk and certainly isn't very terrorizing.
