Answer: Australia

The USA boycotted the 1980 games in Moscow, Spain only took part once prior to 1920, Japan appeared sporadically prior to 1952. Although Italian athletes have appeared at every games, their competitors at the 1904 games in St Louis were there as individuals, not an official Italy team.
2. Which American golfer only played in the (British) Open Championship once during his career, and won it?

Answer: Ben Hogan

Ben Hogan was one of the leading golfers in the world between 1946 and 1953, winning nine majors, but restricted his schedule to his home country, barring a trip to Carnoustie, Scotland, for the 1953 Open championship. There, he shot a final round of 68 to lift the Claret Jug by four strokes from Antonio Cerda, Dai Rees, Peter Thomson and Frank Stranahan.
3. Heather McKay was undefeated in which sport between 1962 and 1981?

Answer: Squash

Heather McKay was an Australian squash player. She only lost two competitive matches in her entire career, the last of which was in 1962. From then, until her retirement in 1981, she won every match she played, winning 16 consecutive British Opens, and winning the first two World Opens held, in 1976 and 1979.
4. The sport of lacrosse was invented in what continent?

Answer: North America

The game that evolved into the modern sport of lacrosse was first played by native Americans in what is now Canada and the USA. The modern version is the official summer sport of Canada, whilst in the USA, as well as a number of pro leagues, the sport is extremely popular at college level.

Answer: Indoor baseball

George Hancock, a Chicago reporter, is credited with inventing softball in 1887. The original name was indoor baseball, because it was played indoors, and was designed to let baseball players hone their skills during the winter months. The name softball was first used in 1926. The sport was first played at the Summer Olympics in Atlanta in 1996.
6. In 1987, who was the first goalie in the National Hockey League to score a goal? (own goals excluded)

Answer: Ron Hextall

Ron Hextall made his NHL debut with the Philadelphia Flyers in 1986. On 8th Decemeber 1987, he became the first goalie to score an empty net goal in league history in a game against the Boston Bruins. He repeated the feat in a game against the Washington Capitals in April, 1989.
7. Which member of the Australian Football League was known as the South Melbourne Bloods prior to 1982?

Answer: Sydney Swans

The South Melbourne Bloods were members of the Victorian Football league (the AFL's predecessor) from 1897 until 1981, winning that competition's Grand Final three times. The league had been looking to establish a team in Sydney for some time before the Bloods took the decision to leave Melbourne and relocate there for the 1982 season. Under their new nickname of the Swans, they won the Grand Final in 2005 and 2012.

Answer: 22

There are 22 balls on the table at the start of a frame of snooker - 15 reds, six "colours" (yellow, green, brown, blue, pink and black) and the white/cue ball.
9. Who was the first person to run a mile in under four minutes?

Answer: Roger Bannister

Roger Bannister was a British doctor and track athlete. On 6th May 1954, at the Iffey Road track in Oxford, he ran a mile in 3 minutes and 59.4 seconds. His record lasted for just 46 days, when John Landy completed a mile in 3 minutes and 58 seconds.
10. Which one of the following horse racing courses does NOT play host to one of the five "classic" British flat races?

Answer: Cheltenham

The five flat racing classics are the 1000 Guineas and 2000 Guineas (both run at Newmarket), The Derby and The Oaks (both run at Epsom) and The St Leger (run at Doncaster). The 2000 Guineas, Derby and St Leger make up the "Triple Crown" of British flat racing. Cheltenham is home to a national hunt festival each March, with races such as the Gold Cup and Champion Hurdle.
