Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Los Angeles Rams

Answer: National Football League

Founded in 1936 as the Cleveland Rams, the team moved to Los Angeles in 1946, and was based there until 1994, when the franchise moved to St Louis for 22 years, before moving back to Los Angeles in 2016. Since they won a championship in each of the three cities, they are the first team to have won titles in three different cities: Cleveland in 1945, Los Angeles in 1951, and (then designated the Super Bowl) St Louis in 1999.
2. Los Angeles Dodgers

Answer: Major League Baseball

The Brooklyn Atlantics were founded in 1884, competing in the American Association. Quite a few changes of name and league followed before they became the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1932. On 15 April 1947, the Brooklyn Dodgers became the first Major League Baseball team to field an African American player, when Jackie Robinson made his debut.

They moved to Los Angeles in 1958. One of the more successful baseball teams, the Dodgers have won their 23rd National League pennant in 2018, twelve times in Brooklyn, eleven times in Los Angeles. Of their 20 World Series appearances (the first three league titles were before the WS competition started), they won once in Brooklyn (1955) and five times in Los Angeles (1959, 1963, 1965, 1981 and 1988).

They have also had a number of Cy Young Award winners (for best pitcher), including the amazing Sandy Koufax, who won in 1963, 1965 and 1966, gaining a unanimous vote each time.
3. Los Angeles Lakers

Answer: National Basketball Association

Los Angeles doesn't have all that many lakes, but this franchise started in 1947 as the Minneapolis Lakers, before moving to Los Angeles in 1960. The Lakers have been highly successful, both in terms of championships (second only to the Boston Celtics) and in terms of attendance, as fans flocked to watch the series of superstars who have played for the team.

These include Elgin Baylor (1958-1971), whose arrival instead of finishing his final year of college is credited with saving the struggling team; Jerry West (1960-1974), whose silhouette is used in the NBA logo; Wilt Chamberlain (1968-1973), the first NBA player to score 100 points in a game; Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (1975-1989), who was the all-time leader in points scored when he retired; Earvin "Magic" Johnson (1979-1991,1996), inducted into the Hall of Fame twice, once as an individual and once as a member of the 1992 Dream Team that won an Olympic gold medal in Barcelona, the first time that NBA players were allowed to compete; Shaquille O'Neal (1996-2004), winner in 2000 of the NBA Most Valuable Player, the All-Star Game Most Valuable Player and the Finals Most Valuable Player, the third player to achieve that treble; and Kobe Bryant (1996-2016), the franchise's all-time leading scorer at the time of his retirement.
4. Los Angeles Angels

Answer: Major League Baseball

While the team has been based in the Los Angeles area since their founding in 1961 by Gene Autry, as part of the American League's expansion that year, they have moved around a bit. They were the Los Angeles Angels from 1961-1965, then the California Angels (anticipating an upcoming move to Anaheim) in 1965-1966, followed by the Anaheim Angels in 1997-2004, before reverting to the Los Angeles Angels in 2005 - or more technically, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

They became the Los Angeles Angels in 2017.

The team has had some famous owners, starting with Gene Autry, 'The Singing Cowboy', who owned them until 1997, when they were sold to the Walt Disney Company. Under that ownership they won their first World Series, in 2002, before being sold to Arturo Moreno in 2005.

While the Angels are not a team noted for their superstars, some high-profile players have spent part of their careers there, including Nolan Ryan (1972-1979) and Vladimir Guerrero (2004-2009), the first player to be inducted into the Hall of Fame with an Angels cap - although Ryan does have them listed as his primary team, his cap is for the Texas Rangers because he was playing for them when he retired.
5. Los Angeles Kings

Answer: National Hockey League

The Los Angeles Kings were one of six teams founded in the 1967 NHL expansion. They played their home games at The Forum in Inglewood until moving to the Staples Centre in the middle of Los Angeles in 1999. After having little success in reaching post-season competition, the team organised a trade that saw Wayne Gretzky arrive, and a period of success ensued.

They won a division title in the 1990-91 season, and made their first Stanley cup appearance in 1993. This saw an increasing fan interest in a sport which had previously not been seen as a local tradition; the team mascot sports number 72, the average LA temperature, and not one you would usually associate with ice hockey.

The Kings finally won a Stanley Cup in 2012, and repeated the achievement in 2014.
6. Los Angeles Clippers

Answer: National Basketball Association

This franchise started as the Buffalo Braves, a 1970 expansion team that moved to San Diego (and became the Clippers) in 1978. In 1984 their new owner moved them to Los Angeles, despite the NBA wanting the team to stay in San Diego; there they began competing with extremely little success, gaining a reputation as perennial losers, in stark contrast to the Lakers, with whom they started sharing a home stadium (Staples Centre) in 1999.

This improved in the 21st century, with Division Titles in 2013 and 2014.
7. Anaheim Ducks

Answer: National Hockey League

This club was founded in 1993 by the Walt Disney Corporation, with the name of Mighty Ducks of Anaheim (not that they were into promotion through multimedia exposure, or anything, but the first film in 'The Mighty Ducks' series had been released in 1992).

When the franchise was sold in 2005, their name was changed to Anaheim Ducks. Like their cinematic namesakes, the team has been quite successful, qualifying to play in the Stanley Cup playoffs 14 times in their first 25 years, with one victory in 2007. Since the start, the Ducks have played their home games at the same place, but it has changed name a number of times.

It started as Anaheim Arena during construction, before being called the Pond of Anaheim when the Ducks franchise was established. That only lasted a short time until naming rights were sold to Arrowhead Water, who dubbed it the Arrowhead Pond of Anaheim.

In 2006, Honda acquired the naming rights, and it became known as the Honda Centre.
8. LA Galaxy

Answer: Major League Soccer

The LA Galaxy were one of the ten charter members of Major League Soccer when it was established in 1996, and has been one of their most successful teams. In the club's first twenty years, they won five MLS Cups, as well as losing four finals, and finished on top of the table at the end of the regular season on four occasions.

Not as much pride is taken over being recipients in 2017 of the MLS Wooden Spoon, awarded to the team that finishes on the bottom of the competition. In 2007 international fans of the game had their attention drawn to the LA Galaxy when superstar David Beckham (formerly of Manchester United and Real Madrid, and an English international, as well as being married to Posh Spice) was signed to the team.
9. Los Angeles Chargers

Answer: National Football League

Founded in 1960, the Los Angeles Chargers were a foundation member of the American Football League, moving to San Diego for the 1961 season, and returned to Los Angeles in 2017. Most of the team's records, therefore, were established while they were the San Diego Chargers.

The original owner, Barron Hilton, chose the name because he liked the way fans would blow a bugle and shout, "Charge!" At the end of the 2015 season, the Chargers were one of three teams (along with the St Louis Rams and the Oakland Raiders) that applied for a move to Los Angeles.

The Rams moved there in 2016 and the Chargers in 2017. The Raiders eventually decided on a move to Las Vegas for the 2020 season.
10. Los Angeles Football Club

Answer: Major League Soccer

The Los Angeles Football Club, also known as LAFC, was founded in 2014, to fill the gap created by the demise of Club Deportivo Chivas USA. The first player was signed in August 2017, and they played their first MLS game in March 2018, winning 1-0 against the Seattle Sounders.

They reached the playoffs in their first season, but were knocked out in the first round. A new soccer-specific open-air stadium was built to house them, in Exposition Park, opening in April 2018.
