Third Lanark Athletic Club. were founded in 1872 by members of an army regiment, the Third Lanarkshire Rifle Volunteers, in south Glasgow. The short format of their name, Third Lanark AC, was adopted in 1903 when they severed link with the army regiment.

Cathkin Park is located very close to Scotland's national stadium, Hampden Park. Thirds played their first game there in 1903. The highest attendance for a Third Lanark home game was 45,455 for a Scottish Cup tie against Rangers in 1954. The playing surface still exists and is used by local amateur teams.

Jimmy Brownlie joined Third Lanark from junior team Blantyre Victoria in 1906 and remained with the club until 1923. As well as 481 appearances as goalkeeper, he even managed to score two goals for the club. He joined Dundee United in 1923 and went on to manage them. Brownlie was capped 16 times by Scotland between 1909 and 1914.

In 1889, Thirds met Celtic in the Scottish Cup Final. Heavy snow showers meant the playing surface was treacherous, and it later became clear that the two sides had agreed to play a friendly match instead of the cup final, so the 3-0 victory by the Thirds counted for nothing. Seven days later the match was played for real and Thirds triumphed 2-1 to lift the trophy.
In 1905, Third Lanark and Rangers drew 0-0 in the final, with the replay seven days later resulting in a 3-1 victory for Thirds.

Thirds got off to the perfect start in the final with Joe McInnes giving them the lead after just two minutes. However, Hearts were one of the strongest teams in Scotland at the time, and it was no surprise when they fought back to lift the trophy, with goals from Johnny Hamilton and Alex Young.

All sorts of allegations were made during the 1960s about boardroom shenanigans and corrupt business practices at the club. In January 1966, the "Glasgow Herald" newspaper had front page headlines that the club were going to relocate to the new town of East Kilbride. However, this never did actually happen.
10. The end came for Third Lanark after they played their last league game against Dumbarton in which year?

Answer: 1967

Third Lanark had been more or less bankrupted by unscrupulous directors, and the end came as little surprise to their long-suffering fans. On 28th April 1967, they lost 5-1 away to Dumbarton in what would be prove to be their final match. The club were wound up in the high court in June of that year.
