Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which Met was the first player in Major League history to be traded for himself?

Answer: Harry Chiti

Only the Mets could have pulled this off when in 1962, they acquired Harry Chiti from the Cleveland Indians for a player to be named later. That player ended up being Harry Chiti who was sent back to Cleveland.
2. One June 17, 1962, 'Marvelous' Marv Throneberry hit a triple, but was called out on an appeal play for failing to touch second base. What happened when Mets manager Casey Stengel came out to dispute the call?

Answer: He was told not to bother because Throneberry missed first base as well

Casey Stengel was told not to bother arguing because Throneberry had missed first base as well. Stengel actually did fall breaking his hip which forced him to retire, but in 1965.
3. What was longest winning streak for the 1962 New York Mets?

Answer: Three wins

The Mets had a pair of three-game winning streaks in 1962. One was on the road against the Milwaukee Braves and the other at home against the Cincinnati Reds.
4. In 1966, the New York Mets selected this player with the number 1 pick, passing over a future Hall of Famer named Reggie Jackson. Who did the Mets select as that infamous first draft pick?

Answer: Steve Chilcott

To add insult to injury, Chilcott never even played in the Major Leagues. Jon Matlack was the overall #4 selection by the Mets in 1967. Tim Foli was a #1 selection in 1968. Paul Blair was signed by the Mets in 1961, but was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in 1962.
5. In 1967, the Mets won the right to draft future Hall of Fame pitcher Tom Seaver in a special lottery where the Mets' name was selected, and subsequently matched an offer made by the Atlanta Braves. Name the other two teams that missed out on 'Tom Terrific'.

Answer: Philadelphia Phillies & Cleveland Indians

Seaver was made available because he was signed by the Braves after the University of Southern California (where he was pitching) baseball season had already started making him ineligible. The Los Angeles Dodgers drafted Seaver in 1965, but balked at Seavers' salary request.
6. What unique pitching achievement did Nolan Ryan perform in a game in 1968?

Answer: Struck out 3 batters on 9 pitches in a single inning

In a 3-2 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers, Nolan Ryan became the 15th pitcher in MLB history to strike out 3 batters on the minimum 9 pitches in a single inning. In 1972, he did it again while pitching for the California Angels, joining Sandy Koufax and Lefty Grove as the first moundsmen to do it twice in a career.
7. Which relief pitcher led the New York Mets in saves in the magical year of 1969?

Answer: Ron Taylor

Ron Taylor was the team leader with 13 saves.
8. In Game 3 of the 1969 NL League Championship Series, which player hit a home run to put the Mets ahead to stay in sweeping the Atlanta Braves, sending them to their first World Series?

Answer: Wayne Garrett

9. In Game 4 of 1957 World Series, Nippy Jones was awarded first base on a controversial play where he claimed to have been struck on the foot by a pitch. He proved his case by showing the ball to the umpire with a shoe polish mark on it. In Game 5 of the 1969 World Series, what New York Met was awarded first base on an eerily similar play?

Answer: Cleon Jones

Manager Gil Hodges retrieved the shoe polish scuffed ball and showed it to the umpire who awarded Jones first base. Donn Clendenon was the next batter and he hit a home run to cut the Baltimore Orioles lead to 3-2.
10. What future Mets manager made the final out of the 1969 World Series by flying out to Cleon Jones?

Answer: Davey Johnson
