Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Torquay United were formed by local school leavers in what year?

Answer: 1899

Former pupils from Torquay College and Torbay College held a meeting at Tor Abbey Hotel on May 1st, 1899, when Torquay United F.C. was officially founded.
2. After playing at several local grounds in their early years, Torquay United finally found a permanent home in 1921. What is the name of that stadium?

Answer: Plainmoor

Plainmoor was originally the home of Torquay Athletic Rugby Club and another local soccer team, Ellacombe. The largest attendance there for a Torquay United home fixture was 21,908 for an F.A Cup tie vs Huddersfield Town in 1955. In the early 21st century, ground redevelopment and safety regulations meant that the maximum capacity was a much more modest 6,500.
3. After playing in various local leagues, Torquay United moved up a level in 1922 by joining which league?

Answer: Southern League

The Southern League and Central League were the two strongest leagues outside the Football League either side of World War 1, and Torquay became members of the former in 1922.
4. After playing in black and white strips for many years, Torquay United decided on a new look in 1954, adopting which set of colours?

Answer: Gold & Blue

The club decided on a completely new image in 1954, and ditched the old black and white colours for gold and blue, which reflected the golden sand and blue sea of the local area. The actual strip varies from season-to-season, but the most typical combination is gold shirts and blue shorts.
5. Torquay United were nicknamed "The Magpies" when they wore their old black and white strip but, when the new colour scheme was introduced in 1954, a more appropriate nickname was introduced. What is this name, which fits in with the town's geographical location?

Answer: The Gulls

A new club crest with stylised gull wings was also introduced. The new nickname was appropriate given the number of gulls that frequent the Torbay area. "Seagulls" is the nickname of Brighton and Hove Albion FC, with Torquay using the shorter version of the name.
6. In which year were Torquay United elected into the Football League for the first time in their history?

Answer: 1927

The Football League had no system of automatic promotion and relegation from other leagues until the 1980s, with teams having to apply for a place and hope the poorest teams from the previous season were voted out. Thus, in 1927, Torquay, who had won the western division of the Southern League, were elected to replace Aberdare Athletic, who had finished bottom of the Football League Third Division (South).
7. Who had three different spells as manager of Torquay United between 1965 and 1982, having also briefly managed Manchester United during the same time period?

Answer: Frank O'Farrell

Irishman O'Farrell began his first spell in charge in May, 1965, and led Torquay to promotion from Division Four in his first season. After establishing the club in the higher division, he left to manage Leicester before a short and unsuccessful spell in charge of Manchester United.

After short tenures as manager of Cardiff City and Iran, he returned to Torquay for a single season in 1976. A third spell in charge there lasted from 1981 until 1982.
8. Torquay United's set a record in 1952 (biggest league victory), with a 9-0 mauling of which team?

Answer: Swindon Town

On March 8th, 1952, Torquay thrashed Swindon 9-0 at home in a Division 3 (South) fixture for their biggest win in any competition.
9. Torquay United were involved in a "great escape" at the end of the 1986-87 season, when they avoided relegation from the Football League thanks to a goal scored deep into stoppage time on the final day. What unusual incident led to the referee adding on so much time?

Answer: A police dog bit one of the Torquay players

1986-87 was the first season in which the Football League employed automatic promotion and relegation from the non-league Conference, and, on the final day, Torquay were one of a number of clubs in danger at the foot of the table. Deep into the second half of their final game at home to Crewe Alexandra, they were losing 2-1, and it looked like they were going down, before a police dog came on the pitch and bit the Torquay player, Jim McNichol, resulting in him needing medical treatment. Deep into added time, Torquay scored an equalising goal which kept them up and sent Lincoln City down.
10. Torquay would eventually lose their league status in 2007, but bounced back in 2009 with promotion from what was then called the Blue Square Premier League. Having finished fourth in the table, they went into the play-offs for the final promotion place, and eventually triumphed in the Wembley final with victory over which team?

Answer: Cambridge United

After a 2-1 aggregate win over Histon in the play-off semi-finals, Torquay faced Cambridge at Wembley in front of 35,089 fans. Goals from Chris Hargreaves and Tim Sills gave them a 2-0 victory, and a return to the Football League.
