1. Some might know the formation of the Northern Rugby Football Union (Rugby League) took place at the George Hotel in Huddersfield in 1895. Which team won the first-ever Challenge Cup final, which was held at Headingley in Leeds?

Answer: Batley

Batley beat St. Helens 10-3 in the 1896-97 season, and went on to retain the trophy the following year when they beat Bradford FC. Their third and final victory was in 1901. Wigan won the trophy on 8 successive occasions (1988-1995), a record which is unlikely to ever be beaten. Warrington held the trophy in 2009.
2. Who was the first Yorkshire team to win the FA Cup?

Answer: Sheffield Wednesday

Known as The Wednesday at the time, they beat Wolves 2-1 in 1896. They had previously lost in the final in 1890. They changed their name to Sheffield Wednesday in 1929.
3. Richard Dunn was the first boxing Yorkshireman to appear in a World Heavyweight Championship bout, when he fought 'The Greatest', Muhammad Ali, in which year?

Answer: 1976

Dunn earned the right to face Muhammad Ali when he won the European Heavyweight title in April 1976, by beating Danny McAlinden. The fight against Ali took place in May 1976 in Munich, and Dunn was knocked out in the 5th round. A sports centre in Bradford was named after him in recognition of his achievement.
4. When did Yorkshire first win the Rugby Union County Championship?

Answer: 1889

Yorkshire first won the trophy in 1889 and repeated the success in 1890, 1892, 1893, 1894, 1895, and 1896. They took their 15th trophy in 2008.
5. Who was the first Yorkshire player to score 100 hundreds in first class cricket?

Answer: Herbert Sutcliffe

Sutcliffe reached the target in 1932, Hutton in 1951. Boycott achieved this feat in 1977, in his 100th test. Rhodes only managed to reach 60 hundreds. Hutton was knighted in 1956 for his contribution to cricket.
6. When was the Snooker World Championship first held at The Crucible in Sheffield?

Answer: 1977

Prior to moving to The Crucible, the finals were held at various venues including Birmingham and in the backroom of a pub in Nottingham. The most wins were by Joe Davis, who was unbeaten between 1927 and 1946. The late, great Alex 'Hurricane' Higgins won the trophy twice in 1972 and 1982.
7. Which Yorkshire team was the first-ever to win the Football League Division One Championship three times in a row?

Answer: Huddersfield Town

Huddersfield Town won the title in 1923-24, 1924-25, and 1925-26. They were runners up in 1926-27 and 1927-28. The title record was repeated by Arsenal in 1932-33, 1933-34, 1934-35.
8. In which year did Yorkshire first win the Cricket County Championship?

Answer: 1893

They beat their old rivals Lancashire. In 2001, Yorkshire won the county championship for the 30th time.
9. Joe Johnson became the first Yorkshireman to win the World Snooker Championship when he beat Steve Davis in 1986 in Sheffield. What was the score in the final?

Answer: 18 - 12

Johnson, making his first appearance in the final, surprised many by beating Davis who had been in the last 4 finals. Davis got his revenge the following year when he beat Johnson 18-14, when on his way to 3 consecutive titles. His last appearance at the finals came in 1991 and he retired in 2004.
10. What was the name of the club from Yorkshire, that won the first Rugby League Championship 1896?

Answer: Manningham

In 1903, just 7 years after winning the title, Manningham switched to association football, became Bradford City and won the FA Cup in 1911. Bradford FC also switched to football in 1907, and became known as Bradford Park Avenue.
