Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the name of character in the video game "Brutal Legend" that is voiced by Lemmy from Motorhead and has the same sort of facial hair?

Answer: Kill Master

Kill Master is encountered on the story mission "Kill Masters Mercy". In the mission, Eddie, Lars and Ophelia have to reach the top of Thunderhorn Mountain where the Kill Master lives. In the game, the Kill Master is a bass-playing mystic that emits healing powers when he plays. Lemmy is not the only person in the game to provide a voice for the characters. Other well-known metal singers that have voiced characters are Ozzy Osbourne, Lita Ford and Rob Halford. The "Brutal Legend" game had some mixed reviews but one outstanding element from the game was its soundtrack, for me the best soundtrack for a video game since any of the "Grand Theft Auto" series.

2. This "mustachioed Deutschman" in the video game "Punch Out!!" has been labelled a stereotype of German people. Who is this character?

Answer: Von Kaiser

He is regarded as one of the weaker opponents in the game. The militant style of his character including his haircut, attire and personality led to Von Kaiser being viewed as the German stereotype. One of the lines his character says during mid-fight, "Surrender! Or I will conquer you!", is often used to support that notion.

3. Which character from the video game "God of War III" sported a goatee to complement his Blades of Athena and red war paint?

Answer: Kratos

In the "God of War" series, Kratos completes a series of adventures in combat and feats of valour, developing the story and character as the series progresses. His initial motivation was to avenge his brother, Deimos, who was snatched away by Ares. His name, Kratos, means power in Greek. In Greek mythology, Kratos was a 'winged enforcer' for Zeus.

4. Which character, sporting a pencil thin moustache, from the PS3 and Xbox 360 game "Enslaved: Odyssey to the West" was styled into his own game entitled "Perfect 10"?

Answer: Pigsy

In the original game, "Enslaved", Pigsy is recruited by Trip and Monkey to help them destroy a powerful weapon called the Leviathan. Though he's a likeable character, Pisgy is not the most attractive creation in the world of gaming. Yes, he is powerfully built but he is also vastly overweight, the pencil thin nose caterpillar does little to enhance his charm as do the letters SEXY ironically tattooed on the knuckles of his left hand. In "Pigsy's Perfect 10" our intrepid sidekick has trouble finding a friend so he sets out to build one.

5. Who is tradesman that features in the "Ratchet and Clank" video game series with a moustache and beard?

Answer: The Plumber

Ratchet and Clank first encounter the Plumber in the 2002 video game "Ratchet and Clank". The Plumber is a traveling handyman that Ratchet and Clank keep on meeting in various games in the "Ratchet and Clank" series. The Plumber's home world in the series is the planet Novalis. He has blue skin and brown overalls with a white T-shirt to go with his beard and moustache. If he had a plaid shirt instead of a white T-shirt he would be the space equivalent of Norm Abram. From its first appearance on the PlayStation 2 in 2002, "Ratchet and Clank" video games have gone on to be played on the next generation PlayStation consoles across various game titles.

6. By what name is the ovoid Doctor Ivo Robotnik, the main antagonist to Sega's "Sonic the Hedgehog", better known?

Answer: Dr Eggman

Doctor Eggman is a mad scientist with an incredible set of lip foliage and is as dominant a feature on his face as is his ambition to take over the world. He is human but he has some parts that have been robotized. He's also blessed with an IQ of 300 and a passion for machinery that are his prime tools to drive his schemes. His maniacal laugh was first heard in the original "Sonic the Hedgehog" game (1991) and he has remained a prominent character ever since.

7. This character in "Far Cry 3" has a Mohawk haircut and a unique beard design. He also featured in the video game trailer shown at 2011 E3 show as the speaker of the "Definition of Insanity". Who is this character?

Answer: Vaas Montenegro

In the trailer it shows your character tied by the hands and feet with the length of rope tied to a cinder block at the edge of a cliff. Vass Montenegro approaches your character and says "Did I ever tell you about the definition of insanity?" After he gives his speech he walks of and kicks the cinder block of the cliff; this pulls your character over the cliff and into the sea below. Vass was used as the main protagonist in the game and his character was to feature on the front cover of the "Far Cry 3" video game.

One aspect that the trailer didn't show was its affect in my household. As me and my stepson and daughter was walking round the house saying the "Definition of Insanity" speech. As you can gather this got on my other half's nerves somewhat and we had to stop. By the way, "Did I ever tell you the definition of insanity?"

8. Which thickly bearded character stars as the main antagonist in the "Mortal Kombat" game series?

Answer: Shang Tsung

He is able to shapeshift and maintain his youthful looks by consuming the souls of those he has slain. In later games, his youth is restored by Shao Kahn, whom he serves. The sorcerer Lo Pan from the 1986 martial arts comedy film "Big Trouble in Little China" served as the basis for Shang Tsung's character. Although Shang Tsung's character appearance changes throughout the game series from old to young based on the storyline, his facial hair has been a fixed feature of his looks.

9. Which 1987 platform arcade game featured a Soviet strongman with an impressive nose neighbour (moustache) who battles his way through nine levels in search of a mighty treasure?

Answer: Karnov

Jinborov Karnovski (Karnov) is a former circus strongman who hails from East Russia and is possessed of immense size and impressively bulging muscles. There are so many muscles on this man it even looks like his lip toupee has been working out. Aside from his enormous strength Karnov also has the power to breathe fire, which comes in handy as he fights his way through a wide array of adversaries on his quest for the treasure. These include skeleton warriors who ride around on ostriches, monks with swords and giant fish that hop.

Karnov would become the mascot for his developers, Data East, and would go on to appear in a number of their games, including the popular "Bad Dudes Vs DragonNinja".

10. The 'holy grail' of video characters, who is the bearded doctor that created the Hunter 'Necromorph' in the video game "Dead Space"?

Answer: Challus Mercer

Challus Mercer created the Hunter by experimenting on live patients with the infection. The difference is with the Hunter is that it can regenerate when dismembered, where as normal Necromorphs can't due to them being made from infected dead flesh. Challus does get what he deserves in the game as he is killed by Infector Necromorph, but it being Challus, it is what he wanted. In "Dead Space" the Hunter is encountered in the chapters 5, 7, 8 and 10. Isaac finally deals with the Hunter in chapter 10 once and for all by incinerating it, using the shuttles engines.
