Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Use aircraft in side-scrolling shooter

Answer: Scramble

Dating from 1981, this was the first game to have forced scrolling. As player, you navigated your aircraft through the scrolling terrain whilst knocking out targets with various types of weapon. It was developed by Konami of Japan and built in the US by Stern.
2. Navigate maze-like building whilst shooting enemies

Answer: Berzerk

Another from the Stern stable, this was their most successful arcade game. Shoot the robots with your laser weapon whilst avoiding the Evil Otto as well as the robots.
3. Knight rescues princess

Answer: Dragon's Lair

The first popular laserdisc video game in the US, it moved away from the standard pixelated characters of the time (due to hardware limitations) to pre-recorded video played from a laserdisc. It was a form of interactive video and came with its own problems such as pauses at decision points in the game.
4. Video game based on film of the same name

Answer: Tron

The arcade game was based on an early script for the 1982 film. Strangely perhaps, it is claimed to have made more money than the film did. The film's writer and director was inspired to make the film when he saw the early video game "Pong".
5. Battling in space with colour vector graphics

Answer: Star Wars

You get to play Luke Skywalker as you battle towards and then take on the Death Star in this 1983 game, based on the 1977 film of the same name. You are also accompanied by the digitised voices of various characters from the film.
6. Trackball shooter of fungi, arachnids and an arthropod

Answer: Centipede

The object in this first-person shooter ultimately was to kill arthropod (the centipede). There are over twenty clone versions of the game including one called "Arthropod".
7. Blowing up or dropping rocks on underground monsters

Answer: Dig Dug

Created and published in 1982 by Namco, the Japanese corporation responsible for "Pac-Man". Dig Dug was the character's name although he was called Taizo Hori in other games in which he made an appearance. This other name was a play on the Japanese for 'I want to dig'.
8. Formula One racing

Answer: Pole Position

Another Namco product, this arcade racing game was released in 1982. The arcade game featured basic car controls such as a steering wheel and gear shift and was the most successful racing game of this era.
9. Change the colours of a pyramid of cubes whilst avoiding trouble

Answer: Q*bert

This was an action game with a 3D-feel and some puzzle aspects to it. There was also Q*bert's 'swearing' (namely the characters @!#?@! in a speech bubble coupled with some incoherent synthesised speech) whenever he bumped into an enemy.
10. Defend your cities from a hail of missiles

Answer: Missile Command

This was a 1980 game from Atari using a trackball to target incoming missiles with your own missiles. The game has been linked to the Cold War concerns about nuclear war and has put in an appearance in films such as the 1991 film "Terminator 2: Judgment Day".
