"Golden Axe" Trivia Quiz

"Golden Axe" is an arcade fighter-style game released by Sega in 1989. It has strong similarities in style to the "Conan the Barbarian" stories, with medieval weapons such as swords and axes, as well as magical powers.

Answer: Gilius Thunderbird, the axe-wielding dwarf

Ax Battler is very much a Conan-style character - he uses his powerful muscles to wield his sword, whilst sporting a tiny pair of blue speedos. Tyris Flare is a strong Amazon who also uses a sword as her weapon of choice. Gilius Thunderbird is a comical-looking, but strong character favoured by my brother whenever we played this game as children.

He is an older chap, who is good enough embark on this quest while being fully clothed. He carries a large axe and sports a Nordic-style horned helmet.

Answer: Death Adder

One can't travel far in the world of video games without encountering an evil entity bent on world domination. This particular unsavoury character is called Death Adder, and he has already acquired an army of minions who are mindlessly loyal to him and are what essentially stands between you and the completion of the game.

Answer: Destroy it

The Golden Axe is a symbol of pride for the people of Yuria and the thought of it being destroyed is almost unthinkable for them. Death Adder therefore uses this as a form of blackmail - follow him or the axe gets it! The axe is revealed later in the game to be capable of conferring immortality to whoever owns it. Perhaps Mr. Adder already possessed immortality, since he seemed quite willing to destroy the axe simply to spite the people of Yuria.

Answer: Turtle

Turtle Village is the second level of "Golden Axe" and challenges you to fight various enemies amidst crowds of screaming children. It is in this level that we first encounter dragons and Amazons, who hack at you with their axes. After completing this level, the turtle carries you on its back across the sea to the next level.

Answer: Skeletons

As with many games, "Golden Axe" starts you off with rather slow and lumbering enemies that take only two or three hits to be vanquished. As the game progresses, however, the enemies become more difficult to beat. There are, for example, giants known as the Bad Brothers equipped with huge hammers.

They are slow, but boy can they give you a good whack! The skeletons were always one of the trickiest enemies to fight. They could hit you multiple times with their shield, and had a far-reaching cutlass sword which really dealt some damage.

These mischievous elvish-looking creatures appear periodically, either in the middle of game levels, or between levels. They carry sacks with health-giving items which they drop upon being poked with a sword or simply booted after wandering too close to the player character.

Each of the characters has a magic level, which can be filled by collecting small blue potions throughout the game. The more full the magic level, the more intense the spell is. This can vary from a small lightning bolt, to the fiery breath of a giant celestial dragon. Tyris Flare has the largest magic level, and therefore has the potential to cast the most powerful spells.

Answer: Fire-breathing dragons

There are two types of dragon that are available as vehicles in "Golden Axe". The blue dragon sprays a shower of fire on the area of land directly in front of it, while the pink/red dragon shoots fireballs which can travel long distances. Perhaps my favourite creature was Chicken Leg - a strange but loveable reptilian animal with a beak and a tail capable of knocking your enemies off their feet.

Answer: Death Bringer

Death Bringer was the mentor of Death Adder (presumably at Death School). He is an unhealthy shade of green and wears purple armour. Colour aside, he is identical to Death Adder. However, Death Bringer is even more powerful and difficult to beat, and has the sinister power of mimicking the magic used by the brave player characters throughout the game.
