Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Super Mario World" famously introduces us to Yoshi. During what game's development did Shigeru Miyamoto first come up with the concept for Mario to ride a dinosaur?

Answer: Super Mario Bros.

Miyamoto first came up with the concept of Mario riding a dinosaur during the development of the original "Super Mario Bros.". Nintendo even developed concept art for the then unnamed dinosaur, but due to the NES's technical limitations they could not incorporate the idea into the NES titles.
2. After defeating each Koopaling, there is a humourous cutscene where Mario disposes of the castle. Which castle literally explodes in Mario's face?

Answer: The Roy Koopa Scene

After defeating Roy Koopa, Mario rescues the egg and places explosives around the castle. He detonates the explosives from a safe distance away with the egg by his side; however, the castle does not explode. Mario goes to investigate, and then the castle explodes in his face.

Another memorable scene is Ludwig Von Koopa's demise, where the castle takes off like a rocket and crashes into a nearby mountain. After the defeat of Ludwig, the mountain becomes a more prominent feature on the overworld map and sports a bandage due to the castle injury.
3. Between 1991 and 2008, how many times did Nintendo officially re-release the original SNES version of "Super Mario World"?

Answer: Two Times

Nintendo re-released "Super Mario World" twice. In 1993, Nintendo released "Super Mario All-Stars", which included 16-Bit versions of "Super Mario Bros.", "Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels", "Super Mario Bros 2.", and "Super Mario Bros. 3". In 1994, they released a second version of "Super Mario Bros. All-Stars" that included "Super Mario World".

In 2007, Nintendo released "Super Mario World" on their Virtual Console service for the Wii.

In 2001, they also released the game as "Super Mario World: Super Mario Advance 2" for the Game Boy Advance System. However, there are numerous minor changes in the game in the GBA version.
4. Chocolate Island is the sixth area of "Super Mario World". Chocolate Island features heavily in what "Mario" subseries?

Answer: The "Mario Kart" series

Chocolate Island makes several appearances in the "Mario Kart" series. "Choco Mountain" appears in "Mario Kart 64" and "Mario Kart DS". In "Super Mario Kart" and "Mario Kart: Super Circuit" two courses are named "Chco Island 1" and "Choco Island 2".
5. How many different themed worlds are there in "Super Mario World"?

Answer: Nine

There are seven main realms in "Super Mario World", and two additional bonus realms. These are "Yoshi's Island," "Donut Plains", Vanilla Dome", "Twin Bridges", "Forest of Illusion", "Chocolate Island", and the "Valley of Bowser". Then there are two bonus ares called "Star World" and "Special World".
6. For the Special World, Nintendo titled each level with a different name. Which of the following is NOT an actual level name?

Answer: Super

Here is the complete list of all eight level names:

1. Gnarly
2. Tubular
3. Way Cool
4. Awesome
5. Groovy
6. Mondo
7. Outrageous
8. Funky

Once you beat the eight levels of the Special World, the overworld map coloring is changed for each of the seven regions, Bullet Bills are replaced with pidgits, vines have pumpkin heads, and all Koopas now wear Mario masks. The multi-colored icon immediately above Special is the Super Famicom icon.
7. Soda Lake features a enemy found nowhere else in the game. The enemy belongs in the Bullet Bill family. What is its name?

Answer: Torpedo Ted

If you have opened up Cheese Bridge, on the bridge level there is a secret exit. To gain access to the secret exit, you fly underneath the main platform that contains the regular level end and keep flying to go to the secret exit. You must be careful when flying low as it is quite easy to fly too low and accidentally die.

You will then go to a special level called Soda Lake, which is another entrance to the Star World. Soda Lake is the only level to include the underwater Bullet Bill cousin, Torpedo Ted.
8. There are four different color Yoshis in the game: green, blue, yellow, and red. Which Yoshi sprouts wings no matter what color Koopa shell he places in his mouth?

Answer: Blue

The green Yoshi is found in eggs spread throughout the levels. The red, blue and yellow Yoshis are found in the Star World. After feeding the special color Yoshis five enemies Mario can ride them.

The blue Yoshi flies. The red Yoshi blows fire. The yellow Yoshi causes a cloud of dust to kill enemies when he impacts the ground.
9. In what world is the Blue Switch Palace found?

Answer: Forest of Illusion

There are four switch palaces in "Super Mario World": yellow, green, red, and blue. The Yellow Switch Palace is openly accessible and is on Yoshi's Island. The other three switch palaces are hidden and must be opened by going through secret exits on individual levels.

The Green Switch Palace is in Donut Plains. The Red Switch palace is in Vanilla Dome. The Blue Switch Palace is in Forest of Illusion.
10. In the early 1990s, Phillips was going to produce a sequel to "Super Mario World" entitled "Super Mario's Wacky Worlds". After the commercial failure of the CD-i, Phillips stopped production of the sequel and instead released what Mario game for the CD-i?

Answer: Hotel Mario

In the early 1990s, Phillips had a development deal with Nintendo to produce an SNES console peripheral which ran off CD-Roms. Part of the deal was that Phillips could produce officially licensed games based off both the "Mario" and "Zelda" franchise.

They produced three "Zelda" titles which were all panned by critics and gamers alike. Although the three "Zelda" titles were developed by a third party company, "Hotel Mario" was produced by Phillip's in-house development team Fantasy Factory.

Freelance artist Trici Venoloa and art director Jeff Zoern based the in-game artwork for "Hotel Mario" off Disney and the works of a personal hero of mine, J. R. R. Tolkien.
