Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This crooked little house in Berkshire, England, was originally constructed in 1592 and known as Market Cross House. It is in close proximity to which royal residence?

Answer: Windsor Castle

The Crooked House, as it is now more commonly known, was initially built in 1592, but demolished to make way for a new Guildhall. The house was later rebuilt in 1718 out of green oak which is how it got its tilt. 'Green' oak is newly felled wood full of moisture which is known to shrink and distort when it dries out. During its long history, the house has been a brewery, butchers and antique shop, and is now a tea room, serving a variety of sandwiches, tea cakes and clotted cream teas.
2. There are several upside-down houses around the world, but the one I have chosen is in Szymbark, Poland. What do some tourists complain about when they visit this house?

Answer: Feeling seasick

The house was designed by a Polish businessman called Daniel Czapiewski. His message to the world, through his design, was about Communism and what an upside-down world we live in. It took 114 days to construct, and the builders only worked for three hours at a time before they took a break. This was because of feeling disorientated and dizzy inside a house with unusual wall angles.
3. You will find Cabo Branco near to Ponta do Seixas, Brazil, which happens to be the most easternmost point in all the Americas. What is the function of this building?

Answer: Lighthouse

The Cabo Branco (Cape White) lighthouse, with its three triangular shaped wings, stands above the sea cliffs in the eastern state of Paraiba. Opened in 1972, the triangular tower is 18m high with three wing like structures which stand 3.5 metres above ground level.
4. This unusual house made from steel is on Galveston Island in Texas. What is it called?

Answer: Kettle House

Kettle House sits in a field off San Luis Pass Road near to the junction with Miramar Drive on Galveston Island, Texas. Nobody seems to know much about it, even the locals, but it is believed to have been built in the 1950s. Some of the islanders believe it was an upside down silo with a roof put on top. Since being constructed, windows and a letter box have been added but nobody knows who lives there.
5. This cliff top dwelling was one of six monasteries built at Meteora in Greece. What does the name "Meteora" mean in English?

Answer: Hovering in the air

It is believed that these monasteries were built in the 14th and 15th centuries during the time when monks felt threatened by political upheaval, especially during the Turkish occupation. They used to live in caves but built their dwellings atop towering rocks with the only access by rope ladder. Nowadays, there are roads and steps which can take you to the top.
6. Cube houses, or Kubuswoning, are found in a Dutch city which is also home to one of the largest ports in the world. Where are these unusual buildings located?

Answer: Rotterdam

Designed by Piet Blom and built in 1984, these houses can be located near to Blaak Subway Station in Rotterdam. Each house was meant to represent an abstract tree so that the whole development looked like a forest. Each cube is tilted at a 45 degree angle with an interior which consists of three floors with living quarters.
7. People who live in a quirky looking house may be expected to work at a quirky looking office block. What did the company who built this unusual building manufacture?

Answer: Baskets

Longaberger is a family owned American company selling hand crafted baskets made from maple wood. The founder, Dave Longaberger, had his novelty headquarters built in Newark, Ohio, to the design of one of his baskets. Opened in 1997, the building has seven floors and is approximately 180,000 square feet in size.
8. This image is of a Kvivik igloo, but where in the world can it be found?

Answer: Faroe Islands

The Faroe Islands off the coast of Denmark is home to two small identical igloos. They are approximately 300 square feet in size, and situated in an ideal place if you want to go back to basics when you hire a holiday home. The interior has a kitchen/living room area, bathroom and a loft with a double bed. The big bonus of taking a break here is being surrounded by mountains and sea in a very tranquil location.
9. This building was erected in 1922 to remind everyone about the corrupt administration during United States President Warren G. Harding's term in office. What was the name of the famous scandal?

Answer: The Teapot Dome

President Harding could not live down the Teapot Dome scandal which rocked his term in office, causing one of his administration to be imprisoned for accepting bribes. It all stemmed from the lease of the Teapot Dome Oil Field in Wyoming. The Tea Pot Dome building erected in 1922 is now a service station and can be located at Zillah near Washington.
10. This crooked little building called Krzywy Domek was constructed in 2004 as part of a shopping centre that includes a drinking establishment called The Wonky Pub. In which country can it be found?

Answer: Poland

With its warped roof and gables, Krzywy Domek (Crooked House) was designed by Szotynscy & Zaleski after being inspired by a fairy tale illustrator called Jan Marcin Szancer. Situated in the seaside town of Sopot, it is believed to be the most photographed building in Poland.
