Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Dutch: iemand met raad en daad bijstaan English: to advise and ____ somebody.

Answer: assist

'Raad en daad' combines the effects of a binary pattern with rhyme. 'Advise and assist' is slightly alliterative.
2. Dutch: bestand tegen weer en wind. English: wind and _______proof.

Answer: weather

Alliteration in both cases. Binary patterns. In English the monosyllabic word precedes the bisyllabic one, which creates a perfect trocheic rhythm.
3. Dutch: de pracht en praal. English: (the) pomp and ___________.

Answer: circumstance

Both phrasings achieve a perfect iambic pattern but the English phrasing does not have the alliteration that is found in the Dutch one. The Dutch also has near assonance because of the short a followed by a long aa.
4. Dutch: van top tot teen (e.g. onder de modder). English:(e.g.covered with mud) from head to _____

Answer: foot

New Shorter Oxford gives: from head to foot, toe, heel. Both English and Dutch have a perfect sequence of monosyllabic words here. But Dutch also has alliteration.
5. Dutch: van de hand in de tand (leven). English: (to live) from hand to ____

Answer: mouth

Dutch has rhyme.
6. Dutch: het was buigen of barsten. English: it was bend or ________

Answer: break

Alliteration in both cases.
7. Dutch: iets achter slot en grendel houden. English: to keep something under lock and ________

Answer: key

English has a perfect sequence of monosyllabics. Compare with the ternary pattern : lock, stock and barrel (or for that matter: hook, line and sinker).
8. Dutch : over berg en dal. English: up hill and down ______

Answer: dale

English achieves an antithetic phrasing with perfectly balanced monosyllabics.
9. Dutch: lief en leed delen (in het huwelijk). English: (to marry ) for better or for _____

Answer: worse

Dutch combines the antithesis with a fluent alliterative pattern of monosyllabic words.
10. Dutch : een land met man en macht binnenvallen. English: to invade a country with might and _________ Also to protest with might and _____

Answer: main

The parallels between English and Dutch are by far not a 100 percent phenomenon. In Dutch a ship will go down with 'man and mouse', but English only has a poor 'with all hands'.There could certainly be made out a long list of Dutch sayings having that binary pattern for which English has only 'pale' counterparts. Examples in 'translation': before day and dawn, by high and by low, to complain stone and bone, with hair and hide, between jug and mug, in odours and colours, in fire and flame.

A list that works the other way round is of course perfectly possible too. With might and main = with all one's {might;to} the utmost of one's abilities. (New Shorter Oxford, sub: might.)
