Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which agent was the first to give their life in the line of duty, and how?

Answer: Edwin C. Shanahan by a pistol

Martin J. Durkin shot Special Agent Edwin C. Shanahan with a pistol on October 11, 1925. Special Agent Shanahan was about to arrest Durkin who had previously stolen a car and injured 4 different police officers. When Agent Shanahan appeared, Durkin took a hidden pistol from the car, and shot Special Agent Durkin, who died very soon after. Luckily Durkin was found and sentenced to a total of 50 years in prison!
2. Who was the FBI's longest acting director? (1924-1972)?

Answer: J. Edgar Hoover

He was the director of the FBI until his death having an entire 48 years as Director. J. Edgar Hoover was also the director of the previous FBI agency called the Bureau of Investigations (BOI). Theodore Roosevelt was the president who advocated the creation of such an organization being that he wanted the Justice Department to have its own detectives at its disposal.

His thinking is exactly what led to the new bureaucracy called the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
3. What early federal police assignment in 1871 led to high prosecution rates?

Answer: KKK the First Klan

The assignment was to get into the KKK (first) and then break all their operations down. The KKK was against the abolition of slavery and became terroristic. Many Klansmen gave in their fellow criminals, and this helped lead to a high prosecution rate. Also, at the KKK Klansmen's trials they had juries mainly consisting of blacks. Nowadays the criminals could claim that they didn't have a fair trial.
4. What is the name of the FBI headquarters in DC?

Answer: J Edgar Hoover Building

It was named in honor of the late Director J Edgar Hoover, even though he had numerous claims of awkward behavior against him. It cannot be said that Hoover didn't help the FBI become what it is today. He dedicated so much of his life to the FBI: he was its first director, he pulled the FBI through some tough times, and so it is only fitting to give something back to him. Why not a building?
5. Which of the following is not a section of the FBI?

Answer: ATF

The ATF (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives) specializes in crimes involving firearms, explosives, alcohol, bombings, tobacco, and arson.

There is a BAU (Behavioral Analysis Unit); this section tries to think like a criminal in order to help create a profile of an unknown killer. This group aids in the investigation of many different crimes.

The NSB (National Security Branch) heads intelligence, counterterrorism, and counterintelligence. Basically they help keep track of possible spies and terrorists that can threaten our nation's security and secrets.

The HRT(Hostage Rescue Team) does exactly what their name says they help to negotiate with criminals holding others hostage, in a way to aid in the likelihood of the hostages coming out alive.
6. For what field or unit, did the FBI get a renewed mandate for during the struggles of WWII?

Answer: Counter-espionage

Due to the war, all sides sent spies to gather intelligence and information that they could use against their enemy country. Counterespionage or counterintelligence units work to keep enemies away from a country's information, plans and weapons.
7. What is the FBI's motto?

Answer: Fidelity, Bravery, Integrity

The LAPD was the first to have the motto "to protect to and serve". If you paid close attention you may see that the first letters of the FBI's motto are the same letters for FBI! In layman's terms the motto means; loyalty, courage, and honesty. This motto is just one of the many things that S.A.'s are trained to live by.
8. Where was John Dillinger shot, and what was he going to do there?

Answer: Biograph Theater, to see Clark Gable

John Dillinger went to the Biograph Theater with two women to watch Clark Gable perform "Manhattan Melodrama." However, agents already knew of his arrival, because one of Dillinger's "friends" had already made a deal with the FBI, to give them info for cash.

As Dillinger came out of the theater, officers were given the signal to get ready to capture Dillinger, however Dillinger caught on and as he neared an alley he pulled out his own pistol to fire at officers, but instead he got rained by the officers' bullets. On July 22, 1934, John Dillinger was declared dead.
9. What was the FBI originally called?

Answer: Bureau of Investigation

In 1908, the FBI was called the Bureau of Investigation, and then in 1935, it changed to its current name the Federal Bureau of Investigation. However these were not the only names, there was also the Division of Investigation. But even before the BOI, the FBI wasn't really even an agency, Special Agents were "borrowed" from the Treasury Department. President Theodore Roosevelt was the one who formed the BOI, in his efforts to establish an entire force of detectives for the Justice Department.
10. What are the FBI's international offices called?

Answer: Legal Attaches

The FBI has many offices outside of the U.S. to obtain information and assist the local police. These Attaches are also used in times of war. However, the highest importance of them, is to deter or help to control foreign illegal activities that may become a problem for Americans, and other countries as well.
