Hello! After corresponding with sectant, we agreed that there is no reason why there shouldn't be discussion here as well. The main coverage and discussion will take place in the FT Forums; however, I will also post to these threads my daily recaps which are open for discussion, and will also monitor the thread. Hope you can join us!

Today's Games
Russia 5-0 Saudi Arabia
Welcome to the 2018 World Cup! It's been a long, 4-year wait but it is finally here. I'm very excited for the tournament! Today was a good day for the hosts, Russia, who defeated Saudi Arabia 5-0 after a good opening ceremony featuring Robbie Williams, Aida Garifullina, Ronaldo Nazario, President Vladimir Putin, and FIFA President Gianni Infantino. I think it was expected that Russia beat Saudi Arabia, a team that with all due respect has very little chances of competing for something past the group stage. Five goals, however, completely unexpected! I'm glad it happened that way though, a nice way to start the World Cup. It's always good for the hosts to do well. Good game by Russia, but the real test will be against Uruguay and Egypt. Pleasant surprise from Cheryshev, who became the man of the match after coming in as a substitute for an injured Dzagoev. Not a very exciting game, but plenty of goals to keep us entertained!

Today's Refs
Today's official was Nestor Pitana from Argentina, assisted by linesmen Hernan Maidana and Juan Pablo Belatti. Brazilian Sandro Ricci, who we will surely see as the main referee soon, was the fourth official. Massimiliano Irrati from Italy led the Video Assisted Referee (VAR) team, which was not used today. Overall, I think Pitana did a good job in quite an easy game for him to officiate. There were plenty of fouls, some of which he called and some of which he didn't, but overall he kept the match relatively under control. We will definitely see more from him. There was one play where many were asking if the VAR should've been used, since one of the linesmen did not notice an offside. However, the play had no future anyway, and it would be wasteful to use the VAR for every single confusing play. We'll see how that turns out as the tournament develops. There were only two yellow cards, shown late in the game, which is consistent with FIFA's "unwritten" policy to give out as little cards as possible in World Cups. Good job overall, in my opinion.

Today's Facts
- Gazinsky became the third player in history to score the first goal of the World Cup with a header, preceded by Lacombe (France, 1978) and Omam-Biyick (Cameroon, 1990).

- Dzagoev's substitution by Cheryshev was the earliest substitution in an opening game in all World Cup history. Cheryshev also became the first substitute to score in a World Cup opening match.

- It is the first time in 84 years, since Italy 1934, that the first half of the opening game ended with a team leading by two or more goals.

Today's Questions
- Was this the best performance we will see from Russia? Did it exceed your expectations? Will they be able to keep this level in their next games?

- Who will make it through in Group A?

- Portugal-Spain will be perhaps one of the best matches of the entire group stage. Who do you think will win?

What do you think? Thank you and see you tomorrow!

Though they were expected to win this game, I heard the Russian team had lost their last 7 games, so it was by no means guaranteed. Some fine goals were seen and the Russian team seems to be young and keen, so maybe they will do well, but they'll face stiffer opposition than Saudi Arabia in the weeks to come. It must have boosted their confidence though and it was a nice start for them and the home crowd. I hope they continue to do well. It's always a bit of a damp squib for the hosts if their team goes out too early.

Hope Spain win 6-0, Ronaldo has a very offputting ego.

Australia v France, Saturday night (Saturday night here in Australia)
I'll be happy if we get at least one goal. If Tim Cahill scores it, that will be goals at four consecutive World Cups. Very select group of players have scored in four....Pele, Seeler, Klose.

Apart from supporting the England team, I like to watch and see which teams are playing well this year and being entertaining, rather than having preconceived ideas about who I want to win. Realistically I don't think England will win the world cup but I'd expect them to get through the Group stage.

Hi Mix
Australia had a long absence between 1974 and 2006 but have been in the tournament from 2006 onwards. It all changed when FIFA changed the rules as to what teams we needed to face at the final hurdle before qualification. It's pretty much Oceania and Asia now, in the past we had to face teams like Scotland, Uruguay etc. Our best showing was in 2006 when Gus Hiddinck performed miracles as manager and got us past the first stage, only to lose to Italy in a knockout game after a controversial penalty very late in the match. Italy went on to win the tournament that year.

Bjorn Kuipers declares the end of the match. Narrowly, Uruguay defeats Egypt 1-0. Egypt's defense was great, but there was barely any offensive effort.
