Another last minute goal. This time by Saudi Arabia.
Uruguay look strong. They've let in no goals so far.
Egypt has the oldest player in the tournament. Their goalkeeper is 45 years old AND he saved a penalty.

I read that some Iranian fans made a noise all night outside the Portuguese Team's hotel to try to disrupt their sleep. That makes me want Portugal to win.

The Iranian goalkeeper once slept rough and cleaned cars for a living.
I once thought I'd write a book about goalkeepers. There are certainly some interesting eccentrics among them.

I could barely breathe and type and watch two separate screens using VAR at the same time! An insane ending!

The final scores are:

Iran 1-1 Portugal
Spain 2-2 Morocco

Round of 16:
Spain vs Russia
Uruguay vs Portugal

VAR needed to be improved VASTLY before it is used on the greatest stage in football.

How the referee decided that was a penalty for Iran is almost unbelievable.

This is my problem. I don’t mind decisions being wrong. I’ve watched football like that for 30 years, it doesn’t bother me that referees and assistant referees make mistakes in real time. But when they can go and look at numerous angles and STILL get it wrong, or even overturn a correct decision it turns it into something farcical.

I will promise not to mention it again until after the tournament. I’m annoying myself!

This time I agree with you! The Iran penalty decision was clearly wrong, they took a lot of time to decide as well. And they took way too much time in Ronaldo’s red card review. BUT without VAR, Spain would’ve had a clear goal disallowed due to a non-existent offside invented by the linesman. I insist that VAR is a good tool that will give football more justice, but the human error factor will remain. And absolutely, much more needs to be improved for VAR to function. They need to take less time and refs need to be unanimous in terms of their criteria to check, for instance. But I insist, I still think VAR has more good than bad.

Today's Games
Uruguay 3-0 Russia
It was hard to predict a score for this match, because Russia was performing unexpectedly well and Uruguay was not performing at its best, and got lucky in both matches they won. However, this result was sort of a back to reality check for both teams. Uruguay easily defeated Russia taking advantage of childish mistakes of the host team. Russia has it very difficult if they want to go through the next round, as Spain is clearly the superior squad. Uruguay actually has great chances of defeating Portugal, who IMO don't play well at all excluding Cristiano Ronaldo.

Saudi Arabia 2-1 Egypt
In a surprising result, Saudi Arabia, a team that had lost both its matches and is considered to be the worst team of the tournament, defeated Egypt. Egypt was one of the favorites in this group to classify, but they ended up as the last place with 0 points. Mo Salah scored, but also missed a clear chance. A sad showing by Egypt overall. Some people I know considered Egypt to be their "dark horse", but it was not the case. Saudi Arabia got lucky, because they got two penalties, one of which they missed! Good for them, nonetheless. Both teams are out.

Iran 1-1 Portugal and Spain 2-2 Morocco
I felt compelled to write these two together because it was truly a dramatic finish. Portugal and Spain were favorites to win these, and hence qualify through the next round. They did, but with much more drama than they would have wished. With Morocco eliminated, Portugal was all set as long as they didn't lose to Iran and Spain won or tied against Morocco. VAR got a lot of use in both of these matches, almost sending off Cristiano, giving Iran a last-minute penalty, and giving Spain a last-minute goal for good when it had been wrongly disallowed by the linesman. It was an intense ending to the matches, but in the end, Spain went through as group leader. Had Iran scored one more, Portugal would be out. If Portugal does not work hard on their deficiencies as a team, I have no doubt Uruguay will kick them out.

Today's Refs
Senegalese Malang Diedhou was fine in Uruguay v Russia. No big actions except for the red card to Smolnikov due to two yellows within 9 minutes. We might see him again.

Colombian Wilmar Roldan had an OK game in Saudi Arabia vs Egypt, using VAR to call penalties. He took a long time in one of them, but overall a good job as well. He is one of FIFA's favorites, so we will surely see him again soon.

Iran vs Portugal had the controversial refereeing of Paraguayan Enrique Caceres, whose first match was not good. In this case, I don't think he was bad, though he took ages to decide whether or not to use VAR and to follow-up. Cristiano's potential send off is a controversial one too. It looked like he attempted to hit the rival, but it was a tough call. The Iranian team yelled at the ref the entire match, and some yellow cards were given for that. One of them touched the ref, which should be a red card. I think Caceres did better here than his first match, but still not convincing me.

And finally, Uzbek Ravshan Irmatov has the record for most matches officiated in World Cups. He is also one of the worst referees I have ever seen, and what's worse is that he is a FIFA favorite so he will continue to appear despite the fact that he can't do his job. He doesn't even know how to move on the field, proof of this being how he crashed into another player (not the first time, check Portugal v USA in 2014.) A shame.

Today's Facts
- This is now the World Cup with most penalties called in history.

- Uruguay hadn't made 9 out of 9 points in a big tournament since the 1917 Copa America.

- Cristiano Ronaldo keeps breaking records; unfortunately, this wasn't a good one: he became the first Portuguese player in history to miss a penalty in World Cup history.

What's Next
This list only has the matches to be played the next day (tomorrow) as well as the next ones involving the teams that played today. That is why some of you have noticed that I am "skipping" some matches.

Tuesday June 26: Denmark vs France, 8am FST
REFEREE: Sandro Ricci (BRA)

Tuesday June 26: Australia vs Peru, 8am FST
REFEREE: Sergey Karasev (RUS)

Tuesday June 26: Nigeria vs Argentina, 12pm FST

REFEREE: Antonio Mateu Lahoz (SPA)

Saturday June 30: Uruguay vs Portugal, 12pm FST

Sunday July 1: Spain vs Russia, 8am FST

Today's Questions
-Will Argentina beat Nigeria and advance through the next stage?

- Who do you think will win? Uruguay and Russia or Portugal and Spain? Will the European powerhouses be defeated or not?

Thank you all for your comments and for reading. I really appreciate you being on these forums and participating. As always, feedback is welcome.

Two somewhat predictable results.......the fact France - Denmark drew, was practically a dead certainty, and neither looked interested in anything else.

Sorry Lpez, I'm with nasty, I think VAR creates more controversy than it solves.........or least the current usage of it does.
I have said before, and will say again, for over a century, in theory at least, "THE REFEREES DECISION IS FINAL".........most have been right, some have not..........swings and roundabouts, rough and smooth........you cannot eliminate human error. Fair enough, accept it and play the game.
That is how the game has always been played....I see no reason why modern electronic technology need need intrude.
Scrap VAR, give the control of the game back to referees, IMO.
Yes, sure, I have been guilty of standing on the terraces (long before "Elfin Safety" made in compulsory for all to sit), and accused the referee of having below standard eyesight and illegitimate to boot! "Who's the B****** in the black?", was an oft used chant! I digress..........sorry.

Your questions..............I would predict Spain to beat Russia, and Uruguay to beat Portugal, the latter being dependent upon Portugal not being given too many free kicks in "RR" (Ronaldo Range).

I think "its current usage" is key there. VAR definitely has a lot of flaws and it is definitely creating controversy, but long-term, it does help with more justice, I think.
