Astonishing how many vital World Cup goals are scored in the last minutes of the game or injury time.

Heard from yours truly.........."The Swiss need a goal, but can't see them scor....................*****ing Hell........WHAT a goal" . That first goal by Switzerland looked all the better because it came out of the blue....there looked no danger of a goal from Serbian view......until the Swiss player hit it!

Overall a fair enough result, Serbia IMO shaded the first half....Switzerland the second..........again a game remarkably free from the "fall to the ground and writhe in agony" ploy after every tackle.

Due to various factors, didn't get to watch any other game today.

I didn’t get chance to see any again. Will try to catch the highlights tonight. This tournament is having plenty of dramatic finished to games though!

Could be wrong, and my memory is not always the best, but wasn’t the group stage of Brazil 2014 full of excitement, great finishes, comebacks, good thrashings and good entertainment aswell but then the knockout stages most games were frighteningly dull as neither team was daring to try to win the games for fear of losing?

I can see only the first 30 minutes in the Nigeria vs Iceland, soooooo boring
Shakiri and Shaka make a great second half with the score and passed, good control and excellent technica. I like the first half of Serbia with control of good manage of space. But the Switzerland second half with speed and many good plays was awesome.

My Best players (update)

1. Cristiano 4 goals excellent in the first game and win the second
2. Cherishev 3 goals it's not the titular and with goals in both games it's an amazing striker.
3. Luka modric in a great shape with goals and a good skill to manage the time and space
4. Shakiri
5. Kane
6. Lozano
7. Lukaku
8. Schmeichel(Denmark)
9. Golovin
10. Coutinho

On the bubble: Carrillo, Shaka, Neymar, Navas keilor, rakitich.

Great match between Serbia and Switzerland, World Cup-worthy. You're right Mix, there has been an astonishing amount of last minute goals. Joecali, your list looks good but I would definitely put Keylor Navas somewhere in there. Yes, Costa Rica is eliminated and lost both of its matches so far, but without Navas, Brazil could've won 7-0 today!

Schmeichel has more saves and was excellent too...with many key saves to win points.

joecali. You missed all the excitement in the Nigeria v Iceland game. The second half was the most exciting with 2 excellent goals by Musa of Nigeria.

Serbia v Switzerland. Good game. Serbia missed out on a penalty when 2 Swiss players held down a Serbian player in the penalty box while the Serbian player was attempting to head the ball into the goal. He got his head to it but his movements were hampered by the 2 Swiss guys hanging off him and he missed the goal. Why the referee didn't give a penalty, no one could understand. In spite of VAR (which wasn't consulted in this case) there have been some bad refereeing decisions in this tournament.

I just made a ridiculously verbose post on the forum thread, but to quickly paraphrase one of the things I was saying, I think the refereeing is actually adversely affected by VAR because I think refs are letting things go a bit more to wait and see whether they get the wink from the VARs to review it. Perhaps that's just me having a downer on VAR, anyone else think the same?

Totally agree, not to mention the effect video reviews have on team momentum and all round flow of the game. I'm sure referees like being the centre of attention too. They certainly do in Aussie Rules. A good referee is one you don't even notice. Hard to not notice a referee running off the ground, watching a bit of television, and then making a dramatic re-entry.

I've mixed feelings about VAR. It has enabled referees to pick up things they missed. (Before they might have consulted the linesmen but there's nothing like seeing it for yourself). However they don't always ask to see VAR and have missed some crucial things. I do agree that it might result in refs not troubling to be too careful about refereeing as they have VAR as a back up.

I liked the VAR to avoid many mistakes what can change a game, it's a tool and need be used with careful but help to a play with more justice. I liked the speed and don't cut so much the game. The bad side it's how 4 refery don't see with the cameras many obvious plays as the penalty against Switzerland.

I wonder about Jose Mourinho's man management skills or ability to see and nurture talent. He has let so many good players go from Chelsea including Kevin De Bruyne, Romelu Lukaku, Mohammed Salah and others I can't quite recall, and when Mourinho left Chelsea he was on bad terms with many of the players.

Eden Hazard also played for Chelsea of course. Mourinho did keep him but they fell out towards the end

Exciting first half. 4 goals. Good football. It's occurred to me that referees might be judged by how many VAR decisions go against their initial decisions, and if they realise this the bad referees may not ask for VAR.
