Nasty you're right. I hated the ballot to win or decide in the soccer.
The fair play it's good to decide a winner, to try to obtain a better show, this World Cup with only two red cards and many games with few yellow cards.

Thank you, Joe... so the yellow cards decided it.

Really tough for Senegal, but definitely better than drawing lots. At least it was based on actually play, not chance.

Today's Games
Mexico 0-3 Sweden
Everything that could go wrong for Mexico went wrong, except of course, the fact that we were saved by the Koreans. The first five minutes of the match showed that Mexico was not prepared to face Sweden, and were caught by surprise completely. After beating Germany, we all predicted that Sweden could be defeated as well. Maybe it was an excess of confidence. Maybe the overconfidence paired with Sweden's desperation to make it through the next round played a role. The match started with two ridiculous referee mistakes against Mexico: a yellow card to Jesus Gallardo 13 seconds after the match started (the fastest card ever in a World Cup, and a foul that did not deserve a card) and a handball by the Mexican goalkeeper when he was clearly inside the box. Mexico then lost concentration, including Chicharito giving the ref probable cause for a handball (which thankfully VAR disallowed.) The team fell to pieces. I don't think the second goal should've been a penalty, as Moreno hardly touched the Swede player as a foul. But the Swede victory is unobjectionable, it was a sad day for the Mexican team. It is certainly difficult to beat Brazil, especially if they play like they did here, but not impossible. Brazil is also not in its best level, so we'll see.

South Korea 2-0 Germany
What an amazing feat by the South Koreans. They held the World Champions scoreless for pretty much the entire match, then scored two goals, defeated them, and qualified Mexico in the process. The German team suffered its worst embarrassment in its history, probably, as this is the first time that they are eliminated in the group stage, and in their group's last place! I wonder what happened. There is a story circulating that the Koreans celebrated at the end because they thought Mexico won and they were qualified too. Sorry, Korea. We don't deserve you.

Serbia 0-2 Brazil and Switzerland 2-2 Costa Rica
Well, Argentina achieved a miracle with the help of Messi and Rojo. Nigeria couldn't remain consistent and was eliminated. Croatia finished with a perfect group stage, good job by them. Either way, I can't see Argentina defeating France (although France isn't playing very well either.)

Today's Refs
Argentine referee Nestor Pitana did a terrible job in the Mexico vs Sweden. He did not directly interfere in the final score of the match, but it was an atrocious performance. The foul and yellow card he gave 13 seconds after the match started is never a yellow card. I don't understand why he viewed it as such. Chicharito did commit a penalty, although VAR said no. It is also possible that VAR said yes and Pitana made the final decision not to call it. Moreno's sliding tackle should not have been a penalty, since the Swede greatly exaggerated a clean contact. Why not go to VAR if there is doubt? If VAR will be used, the ref can't have full authority. Otherwise, they can decide just like that not to check a controversial play. Disappointing job by Pitana, who did well in the inaugural match.

American Mark Geiger had no issues in Korea v Germany, except for the last few minutes. Two South Korean goals checked by VAR, as an initial offside call was proved to be wrong.

Iranian Alireza Faghani and French Clement Turpin had no trouble in theirs.

Today's Facts
- Germany has been knocked out in the group stage for the first time in World Cup history. This also happened to reigning World Champions in 2002, 2010 and 2014. A blessing and a curse?

- Mexico and Brazil are the ONLY countries to go through the group stage of the last seven World Cups, since 1994.

- Thiago Silva became the first Brazilian defender to score in two separate World Cups (2014 and 2018.)

What's Next
Monday July 2: Brazil vs Mexico, 8am FST

Tuesday July 3: Sweden vs Switzerland, 8am FST

It certainly looks difficult for Mexico to win, but it is not impossible. This has been a World Cup full of surprises, so you never know!

I do think the fair play criteria is fair, better than just a ballot.

Now THIS is the sort of England performance we fans are used to!
The majority of the spectators are not, and some have already indicated their displeasure at an apparent re-play of the Denmark v France "A nil - nil draw will do us both nicely" performance.........or am I being unjust?

So boring England vs Belgium I recorded to see and speed forward and see in 20 minutes.

Denmark vs France and this game was the worst in a very exciting world cup.

England and Belgium basically played their B teams and as they both knew they were through to the next stage there didn't seem to be a sense of urgency or a spark in the game. I was tired after a long day in the heat and I went to sleep before the end of the game but I saw the result today.

Today's Games
Japan 0-1 Poland
A dignified goodbye for Poland, and not a good match by Japan. Despite the fact that they qualified because of "fair play", meaning that they received less yellow/red cards than Senegal, the last 20 minutes were the exact opposite of fair play. The Japanese team spent the time passing the ball around without attempting anything. It reminded me of the terrible Denmark vs France where both teams just played to not lose. I think Japan will be eliminated in the next round, do you?

Senegal 0-1 Colombia
Mixed feelings here. On one hand, I am happy to see the Colombian squad win despite James Rodriguez leaving due to injury early in the match. However, I also feel bad for Senegal, who played a great first pair of matches. And leaving because of "fair play" (something that had never happened before) must be awful! I hope we see Senegal in the next World Cup. They did much more than what was expected.

England 0-1 Belgium and Panama 1-2 Tunisia
I think Belgium is a very strong contender to win the Cup, even if England played with reserves. Belgium is a great team and even though most of the match was uneventful, they are a team to watch. They might surprise more than one of the powerhouses. As for Panama, I feel sorry about them being the worse team of the tournament, but they really are very limited. It was good to see them and their fans compete though.

Today's Facts
- This is the first World Cup since 1982 where no African teams go through the group stage. A shame.

- Good news: this is the first time in history that every participating team in the World Cup scores at least two goals.

- Manchester City, followed by Barcelona and Real Madrid, have the most players playing in the Round of 16.

What's Next
Saturday June 30: France vs Argentina, 8am FST
REFEREE: Alireza Faghani (IRN)

Saturday June 30: Uruguay vs Portugal, 12pm FST
REFEREE: Cesar Ramos (MEX)

Today's Questions
- Who will make it through? France or Argentina? Uruguay or Portugal? Are any of these serious contenders for the trophy?

I do not like the teams that hit so much, they use the fouls as a deliberate tactic to demolish the opponent's physical and may Will cause a injury.

it's a good team, it's a very complicated play against this team, it's a solid team but I don't liked this tactical.
they deserved at least three more cards with a stricter referee.
I'm very disappointment with pitana too, was a mess in the last game.

Agreed Joe........and what is even worse are teams where after almost every tackle, player goes down "in agony", even if no contact has been made, in an effort to solicit a free kick/penalty from the referee.
Some team seem composed of "Hollywood Actors", and sadly some referees still fall for it.
What is quite amusing is following scenario:-
"Player falls to ground as if "mortally wounded", referee takes no notice and waves play on..........player gets up and sprints down field like Olympic Gold Medalist...."mortal injury" forgotten. Lol

Lpez.............going back a bit, we are going to have to agree to disagree again.........Mexico v Sweden game.

I think the penalty given that resulted in the second Swedish goal was fully justified............innocent or malicious intent notwithstanding, Moreno went clattering in with a clumsy two footed tackled........contact was definitely made (ok, maybe in traditional modern football manner, the Swedish player "made a meal of it"), but IMO clear cut penalty.

Argentina to beat France. Uruguay to beat Portugal.
