Neither Uruguay nor Portugal deserve to go out in the next round but one of them must if they play each other. That will be a fascinating game. Uruguay have conceded no goals so far Portugal have conceded 4. Both Uruguay and Portugal have scored 5 goals, so Uruguay is the stronger team on paper.

Brazil v Mexico. Brazil have scored 5 and conceded 1. Mexico have scored 3 and conceded 3.

Those going out at the group stage usually have a lack of good strikers. Those going through have good strikers but in the next round I think the difference that will affect the results most will be how good or weak the teams' defences are.

Don't forget how weak Uruguays group was Mix! Egypt and Saudi Arabia who both would likely have scored 0 points in any other group and then the hosts Russia who did well to put terrible opposition to the sword but themselves would have struggled out of most of the other groups.

Can't see Mexico beating Brazil I'm afraid Lpez! Sorry! In fact they would have been out tonight if Germany had bothered showing up! Out with two group wins is more than a little harsh though, I wonder how many times it has happened?

Well, third in a group with 2 wins has never happened at a 32 team World Cup.

The last time it happened was 1994 when two groups had third place teams on 2 wins (6 points), Argentina and Belgium. Both went through to the second round though because in the 24 team format the four best third place teams qualified.

I'm off to the theatre today so won't see any afternoon matches. The theatre tickets were booked some time ago. I'm so relieved that I chose a matinee performance at the time. England plays in the evening so it won't clash and I can watch it. I didn't know the football schedule when I booked the theatre tickets. Tomorrow I'm off to the theatre in the evening. These plays are parts 1 & 2 of a 2 parter based on books of my favourite living author, Robert Harris. 3 books were formed into 2 plays. Cicero is the lead character.

Colombia passed to the next round. In a very physical game, Senegal with many fouls.
Senegal it's the first team disqualified by the fair play tie breaker.
I don't liked the reffery, he was very permissive with the hard game.

Colombia makes it through :-)

And, it seems, Japan, as well.

Can someone explain why Japan and not Senegal, with the same points?

Prior to the fair play tie breaker used at this World Cup the decision based on today’s final standing between Japan and Senegal would have been to draw lots!

Always thought drawing lots was a ridiculous way to decide who went through, at least this way it is decided by a facet of the game.
