For a game of football, Tunisia did an awful lot of wrestling on Harry Kane. It worries me that England relies so much on him because he'll be a target, and if he's injured they won't have anyone else of his calibre. They should give Vardy a chance. I've always thought Sterling was overrated and he did not play well tonight.

I actually missed England's second goal because I was out of the room. The commentator at the end of the match didn't sound excited so I thought it had ended in a draw until I saw the online news. What a pleasant surprise.

That was a perfectly placed header by Kane. A bit more to the right and the goalie may have gotten a hand to it. I guess you've seen the goal by now Mix.

Today's Games
Sweden 1-0 South Korea
The performance of both teams today is good news for Mexico, since now thet could end as group leader in a shocking turn of events after yesterday. I did not watch the entire match but did see the penalty, once again called by VAR. South Korea is probably out at this point, but we will have to wait and see.

Belgium 3-0 Panama
No surprises here. Belgium, a strong contender to make it very far, defeated underdog Panama, who are playing their first World Cup. Panama played a really good first half, where they were able to defend well enough to avoid goals. The second half, though, simply showed the abysmal difference between the two squads. Panama might be able to defeat Tunisia and, being optimistic, get a tie out of England, but this would be an absolute best case scenario which is unlikely. No matter what, this is very important for Panama's soccer history. Great showing by Lukaku.

Tunisia 1-2 England
I really don't know what to say... One side of me feels that England has great potential, and another agrees with C30 in that expectations are not too high. I aslo agree with Mix that Vardy should have gotten a chance. I was pleasantly surprised the first 10 minutes of the match, England attacked non-stop and was rewarded with Kane's early goal, at which point I thought we would see many more. England had not won a World Cup match since 2010. A shame what happened to the Tunisian goalkeeper, any player's nightmare. I don't think Tunisia will make it far.

Today's Refs
Overall good job by Salvadorian Joel Aguilar, one of CONCACAF's strong referees. His only hiccup was that penalty he originally didn't call and then VAR indicated there was a foul. A pretty confusing play, since some say it was a foul and some say it wasn't. I personally think it was correct, and I insist that even though not perfect, VAR will eventually help make the game more fair.

Zambian Janny Sikazwe was fine (and nothing else), and thankfully for him it was an easy game that Belgium decided with goals. But what was disastrous was both of his assistant referees. Holy cow. They missed at least 3 offside calls. Had this been a tighter match, we would be talking about them much more (and I'm glad we're not.)

Colombian Wilmar Roldan didn't fully convince me either. I don't exactly know why, but I know we will see him again, so I hope to see a better performance next time.

Today's Facts
- This is the first time Sweden wins their opening match in the World Cup since 60 years ago, when they beat Mexico (who they will be playing soon.)

- Panama starting line up had more players playing in the Belgian League than Belgium's!

- Ben Mustapha became the fourth goalkeeper to be substituted due to injury in the first 20 minutes of a World Cup match, after Villar (PAR), Pumpido (ARG), and Edine Drid (ALG).

What's Next
Tuesday June 19: Colombia vs Japan, 6am FST
REFEREE: Damir Skomina (SLV)

Tuesday June 19: Poland vs Senegal, 9am FST
REFEREE: Nawaf Abdulla Shukralla (BHR)

Tuesday June 19: Russia vs Egypt, 12pm FST
REFEREE: Enrique Caceres (PAR)

Saturday June 23: Belgium vs Tunisia, 6am FST

Saturday June 23: South Korea vs Mexico, 9am FST

Saturday June 23: Germany vs Sweden, 12pm FST

Sunday June 24: England vs Panama, 6am FST

Today's Questions
- Following up with C30's and my thoughts, how high or low are expectations for England?

- How far can Belgium get?

- What will happen with the so-called group of death (Group F, Germany, Mexico, Korea, Sweden)?

Thank you all for your comments and for reading. As always, feedback welcome and see you tomorrow.

England its not my favorite. the team playing in very disappointing World Cups before, I dont expected to reach the quarterfinals.
Many teams with a lot of tactic and discipline compensate the little imagination to create plays. I liked Mexico and Suiza with a very aggressive plan. I dont liked Argentina I want to lose in the group phase, I dont see a real team, its only a single player to win games.

sectant. I did see all the goals when I watched a highlights video online. Yes, it's hard to position self and ball while you only have split seconds to think about it and under pressure. That's what distinguishes the best strikers from the others I suppose. Quite a few normally good players have been booting balls over the bar of the goal in this tournament. There are bound to be nerves at this level on the world stage, and then some teams are facing a better class of opposition than they may be used to on a day to day basis.

The other aspects of goals scoring are creativity, the ability to create space to score goals and opportunism, the knack of being in the right place at the right time.

I thought Tunisia had quite a disciplined defence which mean that England could easily have been caught offside quite often, but England also seemed to be disciplined enough to avoid being offside. In the heat of the moment that must be hard to achieve.

And the best strikers are great opportunists. Has the hay fever gone now Mix?

Would not mind Belgium progressing deep into the tournament, have been a fan of their style of play since '86 Mexico World Cup. The Maradona Tournament, for reasons good and bad.

sectant. It's only slight and not really troublesome now. I agree about Belgium. Of all the teams I've seen so far they are my favourites (apart from England). They have so many good players (many from the English premier league ) and they should do well.

Don’t want to make this the England football topic but very quickly here is how I would use Vardy.

Vardy would not have been effective last night, save him for the games against the teams that will dominate possession against England so that he can play to his strengths and turn the last defender to run onto through balls. You cannot do that against opposition that camp on the edge of their 18 yard box or deeper!

There’s a reason Vardy has such an impressive scoring record versus the premier leagues ‘top six’ for Leicester City. That’s because those teams put Leicester under a lot of pressure and come forward so Leicester can break quickly and Vardy is clinical. Bigger teams will come forward more against England and leave spaces at the back for Vardy to exploit. No point playing him against the minnows.

Facts.
* Sanchez it's the first player with a red card in this World Cup.
* Japan win the first game for a asiatic team vs a Conmebol team(0-15-3).
* Quintero it's the first Colombian player in score a goal in two different World Cup(2014 and 2018), and score the same day(19 June)

the red card change so much the game, Colombia fail in defensive movements, the team try hard to equalize the game. I dont liked the three substitutions, Cuadrado and Quintero create troubles to Japan and I will use Borja(the player for a more physical game) over Vacca.
