The final recap! Thank you all for following and discussing with me! Sectant has suggested me to do something like this for Euro 2020, and I might do that! So I look forward to seeing you soon. Any comments, feedback, or criticism is welcome! Thank you all again!

THIRD PLACE MATCH
Belgium 2-0 England
For the second time in the tournament, Belgium and England competed against each other. The importance of the match is debated: on one hand, it is always pleasant to win something, anything at all, which is the third place (there are even psychological studies that suggest how third-place winners are often happier/more satisfied than those in second place, because they focus more on what the loss represents, not winning the first place.) On the other hand, many believe this match has no importance or relevance whatsoever and is yet another FIFA strategy to get more money out of fans and sponsors. I personally do like the third place match, as it gives the losing semi-finalists another chance at winning something, and it's one more match! Post-World Cup depression is already hitting me! What do I do now?! In any case, this was a pretty good match, but Belgium ended up defeating the English, who have a great future and gave a great effort. These are two teams to watch out for in the Euro 2020 and Qatar 2022. Very strong contenders for the title.

THE FINAL
France 4-2 Croatia
All finals are special in their own way, but this was one of the best I have ever watched in my short lifetime! On paper, a France vs England final looked much better for what it represented, two world powers battling it out for the gold. Croatia, however, did a splendid tournament from start to finish. They had a spectacular, flawless group stage, and managed to play extra time three times! That must have been exhausting for the Croatian players! France had an incredible collection of world-class players, even being able to leave out people like Payet, Laporte, and Rabiot. Mbappe, Griezmann and Pogba are truly one-of-a-kind. Mbappe has the absolute potential to become the best footballer in the world in a few years. It is a delight to watch him play. The French team played well and gave a strong show of their dominance in the final, taking the cup home for the first time since they won France 1998. Congratulations to the French! And the Croatians too, for a job well done!

The Refs
Iranian Alireza Faghani was one of the best referees of the tournament but it was clear he would not get the final, so I think it was appropriate for him to get the third place match. He did a good job, with no major problems. It was nice to see this ref working.

I strongly criticized Argentinian referee Nestor Pitana throughout the entire tournament, because of what I thought were poor performances and decisions. I was almost certain that Bjorn Kuipers from the Netherlands (who was the final's fourth official) would be given the match because he was by far the best referee of the tournament. Pitana didn't do as bad as I thought though. Nevertheless, he made big mistakes. The foul that ended in France's first goal was non-existent, IMO. I watched the play live as it happened and the replay several times and I saw no contact from the Croatian player to Griezmann. As for the penalty, I think it was a clear one, because deliberate or not, the hand was not next to the body, it was an unnatural (perhaps unavoidable though) reaction. It seems odd though, that there was a very similar play with Chicharito in Mexico vs Sweden, which Pitana officiated, and after looking at VAR he gave no penalty. I wonder if the pressure of the final changed anything. I really hope Kuipers makes it to 2022 and officiates the final. He deserves it.

Today's Facts
- With an average of 26 years and 11 days, France is the fourth youngest squad to win a World Cup, after 1970's Brazil, 1950's Uruguay and 1958's Brazil.

- France is the first country in history to win the World Cup without its starting striker (Giroud) making a single shot on target. Oops.

- Mbappe is the second youngest player to ever score in a World Cup final, following the Brazilian legend Pele.

- Referee Nestor Pitana officiated both the opening match and the final of the World Cup. This also happened in Germany 2006 with Horacio Elizondo, who is also Argentinian.

What's Next
UEFA Nations League: begins on September 6, 2018

UEFA Euro 2020: begins on June 12, 2020

FIFA World Cup 2022: begins on November 21, 2022

Today's Questions
- How do you feel about France winning the World Cup? If these same teams were to play in Qatar 2022, who would you predict as champion?

- Which players shined and will shine even more in the future?

- What are your overall thoughts on this tournament?

Thank you for following. See you soon!

Thanks for all of your thoughts and posts over the course of the tournament Lpez! It's really nice to have an extra place to come and look at different opinions and exchange views.

So in that spirit I ask the following in earnest, not just trying to be argumentative:
If not having your arm by your side is an 'unnatural position' then should every player run around the pitch looking like penguins? It always makes me laugh when pundits talk about unnatural positions.

The other thing about this decision is that it took him so many views to decide whether it was handball or not! Surely that in itself is enough to suggest that it was simply not clear cut enough to be giving the penalty.

I think the penalty was a difficult call because the arm didn't move. It was just a flick forward of the hand towards the ball. Nevertheless that movement interfered with the ball in the penalty area..

Players who shone the most in the final for me were Mpabbe, Modric, Pogbe, Griezmann, Perisic and Mandzukic, Courtois and Lloris (in spite of his mistake). but I think the French players have more chance of being around for the next World Cup. I don't know whether the weather will affect teams in Qatar or whether they will have air conditioned stadiums. That could make quite a difference to which teams can cope better in that tournament.

November? Excellent, it won't clash with Aussie Rules which means I can focus on just the World Cup and get more emotionally involved. Aussie Rules will always be my number one team sport.

We have great sporting facilities in this country and despite Association Football not being our most popular sport, the stadiums will always be filled if the World Cup was staged here. FIFA should reconsider our bids to host it. October would be great, Aussie Rules would have finished its season, cricket would start a bit later. And importantly, no problems with time zones. For some countries!!

It's a hard call
Not every hand it's judge as foul.
If the ball go to another body part and jump to the hand it's not foul
If the ball go to the field and jump to the hand it's no foul.
If you are jump and the ball reach the hand isn't foul.
If the hand it's so close to your body isn't foul.

I see as no penalty in the first two replays, Perisic jump while the ball fall him hand fall and for me it's no penalty until what he move the hand to reach the ball while he fall.

France deserve the championship, and solidify a tactical without the ball, and play with very fast counters, with a lot of tactical, with players with speed and high degree handling the ball. Pogba, Griezmann, Mbape, Kante wow it's a very young team, and he are a power to see in the future.

Croatia it's 4 years more old in average of France and it's hard to believe in another generation to obtain similar performance. Without Modric, rakitich o mansukish it's too hard to see again in the fight.

The possession of ball, lose all importance when France and England cross the semifinals without a great possession stats, teams as Spain need to see again.

The VAR it's a great change in the soccer, the human failure is not exclude of all, the time losed in the car isn't so extremely, I liked and for me solve above the 70% of mistakes in the bad calls of referis and this is great.

I liked the tournament, the tactical eat the technical, but great players and many dead balls(corners and free kicks) preparated plays and this was super decisive in so close games.
I hate only 5-6 games in 40 what I see, it's pretty much good or excellent games in this world cup.

Four and half years to new World Cup..it's a lot of time.
I don't want the 48 teams modification, the Qatar World Cup continue with many deaths and bad payment for the workers, and the change of calendars if Champions League and European tournaments

joecali. But he did move his hand to the ball. I saw it in the slow motion playback. So within the rules you set out it was a penalty. I suppose there's always going to be disagreement and it will remain one of the talking points of the tournament.

(In a previous comment I spelt Pogba's name wrongly.)

It was a great tournament wasn’t it! Only one 0-0! That’s not to say 0-0 games can’t be entertaining but they are more likely to be dull on average. Loads of goals. Lots of different styles. Teams coming up with solutions to possession based teams tactics. Excitement involving Video Assistant Referees. A World Cup without incident off of the pitch that seemed to go on without a hitch. Probably my favourite since ‘98.

Just another boring statistic but this this has become the second most commented sports thread on the chat boards here at FT. Only topped by College Football 2010 from a few years back.

Not a boring stat at all Nasty. Well done for revealing this and bravo Lpez for seeing fit to start this thread. It's a complicated and seemingly unsuccessful process trying to register on the forum.
