Directed by Paul Verhoeven, known better for his sci-fi works of the late-1980s and early-1990s, "Showgirls" was always intended to be the R-rated thriller/drama to spark a wave of strong narratives with adult themes...but it kind of flopped in the best way. A lengthy movie about one woman's arrival in Vegas to escape her past and become a star in a topless stage show called 'Goddess', it starred Elizabeth Berkley as Nomi Malone. The movie bombed in theatres but developed a strong cult following in later years because of the so-bad-it's-good element. In addition to winning seven Razzie Awards (a record at the time), "Showgirls" would end up becoming a popular midnight movie a la "Rocky Horror"; it's so bad you can't look away. Critical reevaluation in later years has changed the focus of the film with many claiming it to be satirical. Despite all of this, most of the cast distanced themselves from the movie with Berkley receding, in a large way, from film altogether. Verhoeven would go on, next, to make "Starship Troopers".

And it was not your family-friendly snowman, either. Instead, this "Jack Frost' film started with the transferring of a maniacal serial killer who, en route to the electric chair, ended up getting killed in a collision with a vehicle transporting genetic-altering chemicals. Not only did it transform him into a state-changing snowman, but it seemed to give him all sorts of evil powers. The town of Snowmonton (of course), led by a noble sheriff, had no choice but to fight back. This B-movie is in a class all its own. Released straight-to-VHS it covered its material with a certain level of campy knowingness from start to finish. It was also popular enough to warrant a sequel, "Jack Frost 2: Revenge of the Mutant Killer Snowman", which saw the return of most of the original cast...in Hawaii. The original also marked the film debut of Shannon Elizabeth, who would find fame two years later with "American Pie".

He doesn't last long either. He and a bunch of friends ended up going on an off-the-books Chernobyl tour in this movie written and produced by "Paranormal Activity" creator Oren Peli in 2012. Naturally, things went bad when, after discovering that there was much worse stuff going on in the destroyed city, there was something lurking in the shadows. Despite the horror genre having a bit of a propensity towards mutant freaks, "Chernobyl Diaries" wasn't well-received. Coming in late in what would be a wave of handicam horror films designed to put the viewer into the driver's seat for 'horror that could happen to you', this one pushed further into the unreal than even Peli's "Paranormal Activity" series.

Todd Solondz's 1998 dramedy was a bit perverse despite the innocuous name as the content, which contained all manner of lewd and taboo acts surrounding a suburban family (many of which were HIGHLY problematic), was a major turn-off for some festivals. Sundance rejected the film entirely; Cannes gave it the FIPRESCI Prize. Starring Jane Adams, Lara Flynn Boyle, and Ben Gazzara, the movie also had appearances from Philip Seymour Hoffman and Jon Lovitz, making this a particularly interesting movie to have buried. The film ended up releasing in a short run of theatres-- limited and in an unrated form. Darren Aronofsky's "Pi", unlike "Happiness", did make it to Sundance in 1998. "The Blair Witch Project" and "Run Lola Run" made it in 1999.

A fun love letter to the martial arts tradition, "Kung Fu Hustle" was Stephen Chow's follow-up to the internationally successful "Shaolin Soccer" and it found similar praise for its tight, funny action storytelling. In the movie, Chow, as Sing, joins a 1940s Shanghai gang and fulfills his destiny as a Kung Fu master by splitting off from the gang. Heavily allusive to other classic cinematic works (not limited to Hong Kong and martial arts cinema), "Kung Fu Hustle" (2004) is a treat for any filmgoer. Its popularity coming out of the Toronto International Film Festival led it to steamroll in the international box office, becoming the highest-grossing Hong Kong-made film of all time, a record it kept for seven years.

Answer: Death Spa

With the tagline "You'll sweat blood!", "Death Spa" never seemed to try to avoid leaning hard into the absurdity of their premise. In the film, the L.A.-set Starbody Health Spa starts to experience some downright grisly deaths while maintaining their clientele. As it's discovered, the place is being harassed by a literal witch, using the lack of security in the building's control room to wreak havoc. Somehow, this includes killing people with weight machines, bursting tiles in the shower, and spraying people with acid in the basement. The whole thing culminates at a costume party in the gym, and it's a bloodbath, naturally. It's a deep-cut, sure, but this movie is schlocky '80's horror at its finest. A sushi bar in a gym? Is that not the perfect blend of bad ideas? Of particular note, watch for when the sushi fish, locked in the walk-in freezer (in a gym?), come to life to attack people. Fine art.

Answer: Foodfight!

While one might believe that, for an animated film, this would have all the makings of a solid or, at the very least, passable movie, even for background noise for children, but "Foodfight!" manages to get a lot wrong. Originally envisioned to be a clever film for both kids and adults, the hard drives containing the movie were stolen in 2002 (though some believe they were purposely lost). All lines, still recorded, carried over to a new computer-animated version of the movie and it was quietly released on DVD, but not before losing $65,000,000 USD of investor cash. The film, about the goings on of different brands and animals (yeah, animals) in a closed grocery store attempting to solve a mystery, quickly fell to IMDb's Bottom 100 films. It might have been because the movie featured tactless product placement with very few actual brands; it might have been the well-past-its-time animation; it might have been the inappropriate jokes throughout. Either way, it was something.

Marcel Carne directed this film that made Truffaut so envious. It often makes lists of the best French films ever made.

Laszlo is the husband of Ilsa Lund, with whom Rick had a romantic relationship when they were both in Paris earlier in the war. Rick is in possession of the letters of transit that Viktor and Ilsa need to enable them to travel to Portugal and from there to the US. The movie depicts a Rick torn between his love for Ilsa and his recognition of Viktor's need to escape Vichy-held Casablanca in order to continue his resistance work against the Nazi regime. The fact that Viktor is Czech comes out in the film during a conversation between him and Major Strasser: "I'm sure you'll excuse me if I am not gracious, but you see, Major, I'm a Czechoslovakian."

While "Joe Versus the Volcano" (1990) was not as successful at the box office as their two subsequent films, it was quite possibly the more entertaining in terms of quirkiness. In 1993's "Sleepless in Seattle", Hanks and Ryan only shared about two minutes worth of screen time, as their characters followed separate paths to finding each other. His Oscar at the 1946 ceremony came for one of the all-time great movie performances as Don Birnam in Billy Wilder's searing examination of a man's struggle with alcoholism, 'The Lost Weekend'. To prepare for the movie, he spent time at a psychiatric ward where alcoholics were being treated. The movie also scooped Best Film, Director and Adapted Screenplay (Wilder with Charles Brackett). A card comes out of the machine that says "your wish is granted" despite the fact that the machine is unplugged at the time. By morning, he has grown physically into an adult's body. His mother chases him out because she thinks that he is a stranger who kidnapped her son. Josh finds his best friend Billy and convinces him who he is. Billy then works to track down the fortune telling machine because the carnival has moved on. The grown Josh is then forced to get a job as a data entry clerk with a toy company. The owner of the company appreciates Josh's child-like insights into product development. In one scene, Josh and the toy company owner play a duet on an oversized piano by dancing across the keyboard with their feet. "Chopsticks" and "Heart And Soul" are played on the big keyboard by the two. While Josh works at the toy company, Billy locates the carnival, and Josh leaves a meeting to return to the fortune telling machine, where he unplugs it and wishes to be a kid again. His wish is granted by the end of the movie.

Following the plot of "300" quite loosely, they saw the Spartans facing off against all manner of foes in battle to protect their nation. A parody film being as it is, the movie featured instantly-dated references (Sanjaya Malakar, anyone?), a musical number, and outtakes, and even with all those, the movie still ended up clocking in at around eighty minutes. It has since been regarded as one of the worst movies to release in its decade. Friedberg and Seltzer would continue making similar films into the 2010s as though no one could stop the nightmare from ending.

After making big moves in Hollywood during the late-1990s and early 2000s, Thora Birch seemed to recede from the craft in the 2000s before returning for a small handful of lesser-known films. One such return was the Lifetime Original Movie here, "The Pregnancy Pact", which gets a lot more concerning the more you look at it. While Lifetime movies are known for their problematic intrigue, "The Pregnancy Pact" was based on real events that happened at Gloucester High School in Massachusetts in which a group of girls made a pact to get pregnant together while still in school. The movie proved to be extremely lucrative for the network, becoming one of the most-viewed cable movies of all time. Director Rosemary Rodriguez would go on to have a prolific career in TV directing as a result.

One of the earliest video game-inspired movies to hit the big screen, "Super Mario Bros." was a hint of the source material and not quite a full dose of what players had come to expect playing the classic NES games. Starring, of all people, Bob Hoskins as Mario and John Leguizamo as Luigi, the film saw the plumber descend into Dinohattan to save Princess Daisy from Dennis Hopper's President Koopa. Does that sound close to the game? At all? No? Truth is, it started a decades-long streak of bad video game adaptations. Hoskins, notably, thought it was the worst movie he ever did; Hopper called it a nightmare, blaming the husband-and-wife directing team. The movie flopped in the box office, but it is a relic from a really early time in video gaming history. Of course, thirty years later, Nintendo would give "Super Mario Bros." a full animated film treatment with "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" (to modest acclaim).
