Answer: Los Angeles, California

He was Born Richard Allan Boone on June 18, 1917. He was a seventh generation nephew of Daniel Boone.

Answer: Oil field laborer

Richard worked at several professions before he went into the service. In addition to working oil fields he tried boxing, painting and bartending. His rugged build was an advantage in the boxing ring.

Richard was an aerial gunner in the navy. Upon his discharge he used the money available from the GI Bill to attend acting school at the prestigious Actor's Studio in New York. His classmates included such then unknowns as Marlon Brando, Karl Malden, Eva Marie Saint and Julie Harris.

In 1950 Richard was signed to a contract with 20th Century Fox and was cast as Lt. Col. Gilfillan in the movie. He was not in "Rio Bravo" or "Iwo Jima." He did play a doctor in "Lizzie" later in the 1950s.
5. What was the first television series in which he starred?

Answer: Medic

"Medic" ran from 1954-1956 and featured Boone as Dr. Konrad Skyner. Boone portrayed Paladin in "Have Gun, Will Travel" from 1957 to 1963. The role was initially offered to Randolph Scott. The producers had already typecast Boone as a doctor and weren't certain he could carry a western. "The Richard Boone Show" lasted one season from 1963-1964 and "Hec Ramsey" premiered in 1972. Jack Webb produced "Hec Ramsey". Boone first met Webb in 1954 when he played a police captain on an episode of "Dragnet".
6. What role did Boone play in the 1960 classic "The Alamo"?

Answer: General Sam Houston

John Wayne directed the 1960 epic and portrayed Davey Crockett. Richard Widmark played Jim Bowie and Laurence Harvey was Jim Travis. The movie was nominated for six Oscars but only won for Best Sound. Boone was not nominated. Richard refused a salary for his part as General Sam Houston. John Wayne gave him a Rolls-Royce as well as the buckskin coat he wore in the film as compensation.

Boone portrayed vicious gang leader John Fain who demanded $1,000,000 for the return of Jakes McCandles' grandson. Boone had the role of Mike Sweeney in John Wayne's final film, "The Shootist". Paul Newman starred with him in "Hombre" and Stuart Whitman worked with Boone in "Rio Conchos".

It's a little known fact that Richard Boone dubbed the voice of the minister in the final scenes of the original "Ocean's Eleven".

He married his first wife, Jane Hopper, in 1937 and they divorced in 1940. His marriage to Mimi Kelly lasted from 1949 to 1950 and his last wife was Claire McAloon, whom he married in 1950. They had one child, Peter, born in 1953. Richard took a hiatus from acting in the late 1960s and lived in Hawaii for a few years.

While there he was originally offered Jack Lord's role in "Hawaii 5-0" but turned it down. He was instrumental in having the show situated in Hawaii rather than in California. He was also considered for Robert Shaw's role in "The Sting".
9. How many Emmy awards did Richard win throughout his television career?

He was nominated for Best Actor Starring in a Regular Series for "Medic" and Most Outstanding New Personality in 1955. In 1959 and 1960 he was nominated for Best Actor in a Leading Role in a Dramatic Series for "Have Gun-Will Travel". He was again nominated in 1964 as Outstanding Continued Performance by an Actor in a Series for "The Richard Boone Show".

He went home empty handed each time.
10. Where was Richard Boone residing when he passed away?

Answer: Florida

He taught acting classes at Flagler College in St. Augustine. Richard Boone passed away on January 10, 1981, in St. Augustine, Florida, from throat cancer. During the last year that he resided in Florida he was appointed Florida's Cultural Ambassador.
