1. Disney's first full length animated film debuts

In 1937, "Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs" was released on RKO Radio Pictures. The 83 minute animated film was Disney's first venture into an animation feature film. The story was based on the Brothers Grimm classic and became one of the highest grossing films of the year.
2. Disneyland California opens

The first Disneyland theme park was also the only Disney park where Walt Disney actually oversaw the creation. Disneyland was opened in Anaheim, California in 1955. The unveiling of the theme park was broadcast on ABC for the nation to witness the historic event.
3. "Old Yeller" premieres on the big screen

One of the most memorable non-animated films in the Disney catalog, "Old Yeller" premiered in 1957 and become the fifth highest grossing film of the year. The film was preserved by the Library of Congress into the United States National Film Registry for being such an iconic film.
4. Walt Disney passes away at age 65

Walt Disney was born in 1901 and passed away on December 15, 1966. The pioneer of the animation field in the United States, Walt Disney was not only an animator but also a visionary, a shrewd businessman, and a movie producer. He had 59 Academy Award nominations.
5. Mickey Mouse turns 50

In 1978, "The Wonderful World of Disney" ran a 90 minute special commemorating the mouse that became Disney's logo. Mickey Mouse was first introduced in 1928 in "Steamboat Willie". The television show showcased Mickey's years of appearances and featured appearances by The Carpenters, O.J. Simpson, and President Gerald Ford.
6. "The Disney Channel" debuts on U.S. cable television

"The Disney Channel" was offered as a premium channel to cable television subscribers on April 18, 1983. The 1997, the "The" was dropped and they become "Disney Channel". The landmark television network helped launch the careers of artists like Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez, Christina Aguilera, and Demi Lovato.
7. "Beauty and the Beast" is nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards

Not only was it the first Disney animated film to be nominated for Best Picture but also the first animated film by anyone to take that nomination, "Beauty and the Beast" released in 1992. The story of Belle and Gaston became a beloved Disney classic. The film was made into a live action film in 2017 starring Emma Watson as Belle.
8. Walt Disney World launches Animal Kingdom in Florida

The Animal Kingdom exotic theme park opened in 1998 just outside of Orlando, Florida. The sprawling theme park featured wild animals, roller coasters, and an amazing Tree of Life with over 300 carved animals on the tree.
9. Hong Kong Disneyland opens

In 2005 the ever-growing Disney franchise expanded into Asia with the opening of Hong Kong Disneyland. The theme park is in Lantau Island, Hong Kong and became the second Asian Disneyland after Tokyo Disneyland in 1983. Cast members at the park speak Cantonese, English, and Mandarin.
10. "Encanto" premieres on Disney+

"Encanto" was an Oscar nominated film that debuted in the fall of 2021. In December of 2021, the story of the musical Colombian family was added to the Disney+ television network. In 2022, the film became the most watched film of the year on the network.
