Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:
"The Famous Five" were the first of the two groups to be published, with their first adventure, "Five on a Treasure Island" being launched in 1942. Blyton's initial intent was to publish six to eight novels featuring the four children - Julian, his brother Dick and sister Anne, and cousin George - along with George's dog Timmy. However, the books proved to be such a massive success that Enid would produce 21 full length novels in the series. It has been estimated that, currently, two million copies of the books are being sold each year, making this series one of the most popular sets of children's books on the market.
Of the "Five", Julian, who is twelve years old in the first book, is the oldest. He is tall, strong and intelligent and, although he is a natural leader, he can be overbearing at times. Dick possesses a cheeky sense of humour and is younger than Julian by about a year. The youngest of the three siblings is Anne who is often described as brave but is also the one that gets frightened easily and, somehow, she is usually the one that ends up doing the cleaning up for the group. Anne is a year younger than Dick. The last of this group is George, but George is really a girl. Her true name is Georgina, but she doesn't like the fact that she is a girl and, as a consequence, she cuts her short, acts and dresses like a tomboy and her short temper is likely to get the best of her if you don't call her George.
The name Timmy was on the list above and if you selected him, you would have gotten the red square. The reason is that Timmy, whilst he's a member of the team, is not human ... he's a dog. Clever, loving and loyal to the team, he was found as an abandoned puppy by George and the pair became inseparable.
The first of the "Secret Seven" novels, which is self-titled and tells of how the team was started, was published in 1949; by 1963, Blyton had published a further 14 full length novels. A further two tales were written, to continue the series, by Pam Butchart in 2018 and 2019. But, be warned, Pam introduced some elements of horror into these tales.
Their leader is Peter, who's a little like Julian from the "Famous Five". He's very clever, strong and a natural leader, but he has a quick temper and can be extremely bossy. He is joined in the team by his sister Janet, who can be quite stubborn and very messy, but she is a diligent worker and usually comes up with a range of good ideas. Jack, who has a bad habit of forgetting the team's passwords, is Peter's best friend and, because of this close tie, is the one in the group who will stand up to Peter when he feels their leader is being a little too overbearing.
Pam and Barbara are two friends from Janet's school who spend a lot of time together and work well this way when they're hunting for clues. Their only issue is that they tend to giggle a lot when they're together. The last two are Colin and George, who are the best of friends and attend the same school as Peter. Whilst we know some information about Colin (he comes from a very large family, whom he does not enjoy, and he's afraid of the dark), we get to know very little about George through the journey. Sadly, this is one of Enid Blyton's least developed characters. Just a little note ... there is a George in both of these groups, but they have been deliberately listed as one.
The "Secret Seven" team also has a dog, Scamper, though he's not an official member.
