Albany is the oldest city in the state of New York and the area was originally settled by the Dutch, who built Fort Nassau in 1614 and Fort Orange in 1624, both as trading posts for furs and pelts.
The Dutch name of Beverwijck was ousted by the English in 1664, and the city was renamed Albany in honour of the Duke of Albany.

In the language of the Inuit people, Newfoundland is Ikkarumikluak, meaning "place of many shoals", while Labrador is Nunatsuak, meaning "the big land".
