Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Neighboring countries are Armenia, Azerbaijan, Russia and Turkey

Answer: Georgia (country)

Georgia is situated in the middle of the Caucasus, a geographic region between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea. Historically this region has served as a crossroads between European, Middle Eastern and Asian cultural influences. Unfortunately, it also means that the region has great strategic value and therefore has suffered the effects of geopolitical powerplay on many occasions.
2. Headquarters of Coca-Cola Company

Answer: Georgia (US state)

Quite conveniently, the Coca-Cola headquarters are located at 1 Coca Cola Plaza in Atlanta, although this historical connection between the multinational and the (then still segregated) city nearly came to an end in 1964, when local politicians and entrepreneurs did not wish to partake in honoring local hero Martin Luther King Jr. who had just been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. John Paul Austin, CEO of the Coca-Cola Company at that time, did not mince words: "The Coca-Cola Company does not need Atlanta. You all need to decide whether Atlanta needs the Coca-Cola Company". Within two hours all tickets to the interracial celebratory dinner were sold out.
3. Capital is Tbilisi

Answer: Georgia (country)

The city of Tblisi (meaning warm waters in Georgian) is located in the east of the country, on both banks of the river Mtkvari. It is a vibrant hotspot for students, artists and bureaucrats, which is reflected in an eclectic mixture of architecture. From stern Soviet style blocks and wide avenues to a charming old town with its narrow alleys full of hustle and bustle.
4. Situated in the South Atlantic, next to the South Sandwich Islands

Answer: South Georgia (island)

Although it was discovered a century before, Captain James Cook took it upon himself to survey and map the island of South Georgia. On 17 January 1775, he claimed the island for Britain and named the island 'Isle of Georgia' for King George III. The South Sandwich Islands are located some 700 km to the southeast of South Georgia.
5. Invaded by Argentina in 1982

Answer: South Georgia (island)

On 3 April1982, just one day after the invasion of the Falkland Islands by Argentina, the Argentinian navy overpowered the outnumbered British marines stationed in Grytviken. They were not the first Argentines on the island though. On 19 March 1982, a group of Argentinian marines, posing a scientists, had docked in Leith harbour without permission and raised the Argentinian flag.

The British Antarctic Survey team stationed in Leith relayed messages from the UK government to put an end to this. South Georgia was eventually retaken by British forces on 25 April 1982.
6. One given name was Totto

Answer: Georgia O'Keeffe

Georgia Totto O'Keeffe was born on 15 November 1887 on a farm near Sun Prairie, Wisconsin. While teaching art in Texas, she found her artistic voice and made a series of highly abstract but personal charcoal drawings. One of her friends showed them to Alfred Stieglitz, who already was a renowned photographer and art dealer.

His decision to exhibit her work in 1916 led to their romance and marriage.
7. Katie Melua, George Balanchine, Joseph Stalin, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Eduard Shevardnadze

Answer: Georgia (country)

All these persons have a Georgian background. Although the legacy of Stalin is undoubtedly very uncomfortable for many Georgians, the Stalin museum in Gori is still worth a visit, with its many curiosities such as his office and his birth house.
8. Final resting place of Ernest Shackleton

Answer: South Georgia (island)

The grave of Shackleton (1874-1922) can be visited at the cemetery of the small settlement of Grytviken. The picturesque Norwegian Anglican Church aka the Whalers Church (built in 1913) that stands next it, was featured in the movie "Happy Feet" (2006).
9. Featured as a backdrop to novels such as "Gone with the Wind" and "The Color Purple"

Answer: Georgia (US state)

Set amidst the American Civil War, "Gone with the Wind" contains impressive scenes of the destruction of Atlanta by the Union Army under the command of General Sherman. As Scarlett O'Hara finds her way through the rubble, the camera slowly pans out and reveals the magnitude of the Scorched Earth tactics. A groundbreaking cinematographic achievement for 1939.
10. Kim Basinger, Ray Charles, Ty Cobb, Jeff Daniels, Michael Stipe

Answer: Georgia (US state)

Kim Basinger, Ray Charles, Ty Cobb, Jeff Daniels and the lead singer of rock band R.E.M. were all born in the state of Georgia, USA. Ray Charles is mostly associated with the song "Georgia on my Mind", but did not in fact write the song. Those credits go to two fellows from Indiana who penned it in 1930: Hoagy Carmichael and Stuart Gorrell.
