Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Ozzie Osbourne band & Nestlé chocolate selection

These clues both refer to the colour black. Ozzie Osbourne was in the band Black Sabbath and the chocolates are called Black Magic.

John Osbourne, to give him his proper name, formed his band in Birmingham (the UK one) in 1968, with Black Sabbath becoming one of the earliest heavy metal bands. Their best known album is probably 'Paranoid' from 1970. He and his second wife, Sharon, moved to the USA in 1982.

The Nestlé chocolates are called 'Black Magic' and come in boxes. The name comes from the use of dark chocolate, with the fillings being the usual type of assortment such as nuts, praline, fudge and fruit creams. To continue the theme, the boxes are mostly black too.
2. Surrender & harmless falsehood

The link here is white, as a white flag is a sign of surrender and a white lie is a falsehood which is told to avoid hurting someone's feelings.

The white flag denoting surrender has been a traditional sign for over two thousand years. The first mentions of it are from China and the Romans also used it as an indicator that they would stop fighting. It did not become an officially recognised symbol until 1899, at the First Hague Conference, and has since been incorporated into the Geneva Conventions.

A white lie is used to avoid upsetting others and has been described as such since at least the first half of the eighteenth century. Most parents are guilty of telling white lies to their children - 'maybe later' comes to mind as an example. Someone may also tell their best friend that the dress they are wearing looks wonderful even if they secretly think it's hideous. White lies generally have no adverse consequences, unlike real lies.
3. Variety of tea & queen who had a very brief reign

Both of these clues point to grey. The tea is Earl Grey and the queen who ruled for only nine days is Lady Jane Grey.

Earl Grey tea has added bergamot, an oil derived from the rind of the bergamot orange. Though often believed to be associated with the Earl Grey who was the UK's Prime Minister, the tea pre-dates him and the name seems to have been applied retrospectively.

The other person named Grey is the unfortunate Lady Jane Grey, who was named as the heir to the English throne following the death of King Edward VI, son of Henry VIII. She was a cousin to Edward and also Mary, daughter of Catherine of Aragon, and Elizabeth, daughter of Anne Boleyn. The main reason for the proclamation of Jane as queen was her Protestant religion. Her reign lasted nine days before Mary took the throne from her, as Mary I, and Jane was executed in 1554. She was only sixteen, or maybe seventeen, and was really a pawn in the power game of her male relatives.
4. Jeanette Winterson novel & Netherlands royals

'Oranges are Not the Only Fruit' is the novel while the Royal family of the Netherlands is the House of Orange-Nassau, giving the colour orange as the link.

Jeanette Winterson's novel about a young girl coming to terms with her attraction to the same sex was published in 1985. The girl in the story has been adopted into a strict Christian sect and is subjected to exorcism. Winterson won the Whitbread Prize for a First Novel for the book, which is regularly included as a set book in the UK on the syllabus for both GCSE and A-level.

The House of Orange-Nassau has been the official name of the Netherlands' monarchs only since 1815, although it has been in existence for much longer. The Netherlands only became an official monarchy at that time. The colour orange is worn by teams representing the country in football, rugby, hockey and (one-day) cricket.
5. Marty Robbins' carnation & Alecia Moore

Pink is the link here as Marty Robbins sang about a 'White Sport Coat (and a Pink Carnation)' while Alecia Moore is the real name of the singer Pink, often styled as P!nk.

Marty Robbins was a country music singer who had some success on the mainstream charts too. His first major crossover hit came in 1957 with his self-penned song about getting ready for his prom. He had his heart set on a particular girl, but she chose someone else. Another big hit for Marty was 'El Paso', in 1959 which ended even more disastrously for the singer.

Pink is a more recent singer, with her hits including 'Get the Party Started' from 2001 and 'So What' in 2008. She has also appeared in several films, mainly cameos, where she uses her real name of Alecia Moore.
6. The Rose of Texas & an Asian sea

The rose colour associated with Texas is yellow while one of the seas of Asia is the Yellow Sea, making that the answer to choose here.

'The Yellow Rose of Texas' is a song which was first published in a songbook of the 1850s but may be older than that. The lyrics refer to the yellow rose being a girl that the singer is longing to see again. Mitch Miller had a big hit with the song in 1955.

The Yellow Sea borders China and the peninsula where the two Korean countries are located. It is a part of the Pacific Ocean with the name referring to the silt laden colours of the water.
7. Chris de Burgh & Morgan Freeman character

Red is the colour which links Chris de Burgh, who sang 'Lady in Red', and Morgan Freeman who played the character 'Red' in the film 'The Shawshank Redemption'.

Chris de Burgh wrote as well as sang 'Lady in Red' and dedicated it to his wife who inspired it. The song became a hit around the world, including in both the UK and USA, and is described as his 'signature song'.

The film 'The Shawshank Redemption' was based on a story by Stephen King about a man falsely imprisoned for the murder of his wife. While in gaol he is befriended by Ellis 'Red' Reddington, played by Morgan Freeman, who helps him in a plan to escape, something which takes nearly twenty years. Tim Robbins played the lead character who achieves his freedom and is reunited with Red when the latter is paroled.
8. Booker T. & British woodpecker

Booker T. and the M. G.'s had a hit with 'Green Onions' while one of the UK's three native woodpeckers is the green woodpecker, also called the yaffle. Green was the colour you needed to pick here.

Booker T was the leader of an instrumental band which had several hits, often led by an organ played by Booker T himself. 'Green Onions' was the band's first hit, in 1962, with 'Time is Tight' also hitting the charts for them in 1969. The BBC uses one of the band's recordings, 'Soul Limbo', as the theme music for the station's cricket coverage.

The three woodpeckers found in the UK are the greater spotted, the lesser spotted and the green woodpecker. As you might have guessed, the first two have spots and the last one is known for its green wings. The bird is also recognisable for its red head and is found across much of Europe. The yaffle name is an English dialect name derived from the call made by the bird.
9. Orbison (& Ronstadt) & Thomas Gainsborough painting

Both Roy Orbison and Linda Ronstadt had hits with the song 'Blue Bayou' while Gainsborough created a well known painting called 'The Blue Boy', so blue is the colour to choose here.

Roy Orbison, who co-wrote the song, had his hit in 1963 while Linda Ronstadt's cover version came in 1977. Roy's version did much better in the UK than in his home country while the reverse was true of Linda's, which reached the top ten in America but only scraped into the top fifty in Britain.

Thomas Gainsborough was an eighteenth century English painter, particularly known for portraits. 'The Blue Boy' is a portrait of a youth and takes its name from the clothing worn - a jacket and knee length breeches which are both blue. The model has never been positively identified. The painting is owned by the Huntington Museum and Art Gallery in California.
10. Damson & amethyst

The damson is a small type of plum and the amethyst is a gemstone, both of which are purple.

Damsons are particularly associated with the UK and are generally used for jams (jellies if you're American) or in pies. The fruits are more acidic than plums so are not usually eaten raw. The damson fruit is a drupe, meaning that it has a stone in the middle.

Amethyst is a paler shade of purple, sometimes referred to as violet, although the shades vary depending on the amount of iron it has absorbed. It is a type of quartz. It is classed as a semi-precious stone when used for jewellery. Wearing it is supposed to protect the wearer from becoming drunk.
