Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Rio Azul

Río Azul (Spanish for 'blue river') is not a river, but an archaeological site. It is located in northern Guatemala, close to the country's borders with its neighbours, Mexico and Belize. The site dates back to 250-600 AD and belongs to the Pre-Columbian Maya civilization. The ancient city of Tikal, also located in Guatemala, used the Río Azul as a trade route to the Caribbean Sea.
2. Great Blue Hole

The Great Blue Hole is a large sinkhole in the Caribbean Sea, off the coast of Belize. Found in the centre of the Lighthouse Reef, it is a part of the larger Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System. The Great Blue Hole rose to prominence in the 1970s when famous oceanographer Jacques Cousteau declared it one of best scuba diving sites in the world.
3. Blue Lagoon

The Blue Lagoon is a geothermal spa in Iceland. Due to the high proportion of silica in the water, it appears a milky blue shade. The lagoon is one of Iceland's most famous tourist attractions. Unlike many other hot springs, this lagoon is man-made, not naturally occurring.

The water comes from the nearby Svartsengi geothermal power station, where it is formed as a by-product of the geothermal energy generation.
4. Blue Church

The Blue Church is located in the Old Town of Bratislava in Slovakia. It is officially named the Church of St. Elizabeth. From the roof of the church, to its façade and the mosaics on the walls, all are a shade of blue leading to its popular nickname. Built in the early 20th century in the Hungarian Art Nouveau style, the church is now considered a symbol of Slovakia.
5. Blue Eye

The Blue Eye is a natural spring in the village of Muzinë in southern Albania, fed by the river Bistricë. Locally known as Syri i Kalter, the centre of the spring is a deep blue while it is surrounded by lush green vegetation, giving it the appearance of an eye from above. The depth of the spring is unknown as divers have only been able to reach a depth of 50 meters.
6. Blue Grotto

The Blue Grotto is a sea cave on the Italian island of Capri. It is named after the blue glow inside the cave caused by the reflection of the sunlight that enters the cavern through two different sources - the narrow entranceway and a large hole somewhere within.

In Roman times, it was used as a private swimming pool of the emperor and a marine temple. Today it is a major tourist attraction.
7. Blue Mosque

Officially named the Sultan Ahmed Mosque, the Blue Mosque is popular symbol of the Turkish city of Istanbul. It was built in the early 17th century under the rule of Ahmed I, after whom it is named. Whilst it is a popular tourist attraction, it also serves its primary function of a mosque. Built in the classical Ottoman architectural style, the mosque has a large central dome, surrounded by four smaller semi-domes and bounded by six minarets.

Its popular nickname of the Blue Mosque is derived from the blue tiles and floral motifs found within the structure.
8. Blue Desert

The Blue Desert is located in Sinai, Egypt. It is part of the Sinai Desert and is also known as the Sinai Peace Junction. After Egypt and Israel signed a peace treaty in 1979, Belgian artist Jean Verame sought to commemorate this historic occasion. On receiving official permission from the Egypt government and support from the United Nations, Verame painted a number of rocks in the desert blue leading to this area being called the "Blue Desert".
9. Blue House

Cheong Wa Dae (Korean for "Cyan-tiled Pavilion") or the Blue House is the former residence of the President of South Korea. Located in the country's capital of Seoul, it served as the official presidential residence from 1948 to 2022. Set across an area of 62 acres, the complex included many different buildings, constructed in the traditional Korean style, and a public park. Formerly, this area was the royal garden of the Joseon Dynasty.

In May 2022, the president's residence and office was moved to the Ministry of National Defence building. The Blue House was fully converted into a public park.
10. Blue Mountains

The Blue Mountains of Australia are located in the state of New South Wales, west of Sydney. The mountains form a part of the larger chain, the Great Dividing Range. It was only in the early 19th century that the mountains were first traversed by the British. Prior to this, the British settlers believed the range was impenetrable.

The Blue Mountains now contain several well-established towns. The mountains were named after the bluish colour that they appear from a distance due to the forests of eucalyptus trees found here.
