Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The fruit market is a blaze of colors, and yet a rather dull brown fruit catches my eye. It has a long, slender shape and the husk is dry to the touch. Which exotic fruit is this?

Answer: tamarind

Used in Worcestershire sauce, relishes and curries, as well as in sorbets, drinks and as a simple snack, the tamarind is originally from Africa although it is now grown in many tropical locations.
2. This fruit looks like a little porcupine rolled into a ball and given a buzz-cut. Known by some as 'the king of fruits' and banned in many public places because of its strong odor, what is the name of this thorny fruit?

Answer: durian

Native to Malaysia, and now grown in other Asian countries, durians are left to ripen on the tree, then collected after they drop into nets strung beneath the branches. Creamy and custardy, the durian is often eaten, once skinned, like an ice cream cone.
3. Well, I've seen this fruit before, although I don't recognize the name on the sign. I know it as a custard apple, but what is its proper name?

Answer: cherimoya

Native to Peru and Ecuador, and now grown in Hawaii, New Zealand and several subtropical areas, the cherimoya is known to some as 'the jewel of the Incas'. Once skinned and seeded, it can be eaten with ice cream, yogurt, fruit salads and used to make sorbet.
4. I had no idea fruit could grow so large! Measuring as much as three feet in length, the honey jack can weigh up to how many pounds?

Answer: 90 pounds

Honey jacks have a taste that is a cross between a pineapple and a banana. Grown throughout southeast Asia and other tropical areas, the honeyjack is the world's largest tree fruit.
5. Here's another fruit I'm familiar with, but I don't recognize the name on the sign. By which nickname is the carambola better known?

Answer: star fruit

Once ripened, the carambola has a sweet-sour taste, and is used in curries and chutneys, and has even been used to make wine. In Taiwan and Singapore it is also believed to be a cure for sore throats.
6. The seeds of this lovely fruit led to Persephone's downfall. Which fruit should the god of the underworld, Hades, give thanks to?

Answer: pomegranate

The fruit of a fairly small tree, grown primarily in the Middle East, the pomegranate has a tart taste, and is often blended with blueberries or other sweeter fruits to tame its sharp flavor. A national symbol of Armenia, the pomegranate also has religious symbolism and folklore status in several cultures.
7. Clad in a thick maroon shell, consisting of four to eight white segments, this 'queen of the fruits' is best eaten raw. Which fruit is this?

Answer: mangosteen

Popular folklore has it that Queen Victoria offered a knighthood to anyone that could bring her a perfectly ripe mangosteen. Mangosteen juice is used in several herbal remedies in Asia.
8. I think I have some of these maroon-colored berries growing wild in my backyard. They're bigger than blackberries, with smaller seeds, and they're sweeter than the blackberries I buy at the store. Which berry is this?

Answer: boysenberry

A cross between raspberries, loganberries and blackberries, the boysenberry was named after Rudolph Boysen who cultivated the fruit in the 1920s. Boysenberries work well in any pie, jam, cobbler or cake recipe which calls for berries. They're sweeter than blackberries and raspberries, but they do have a tart undertaste.
9. This fruit looks more like squash, long and hard-shelled, but it smells like a melon. What is this intriguing fruit?

Answer: cassabanana

Originally from Brazil, the cassabanana has the nickname of 'musk cucumber', and is available in a number of different colors including orange, red and purple. Best eaten cut into small pieces, with the seeds removed, the cassabanana has a melon/banana taste.
10. This fruit is easily recognizable to any summer shopper, especially anyone buying for a picnic or outdoor party. But, where did the watermelon originally grow?

Answer: Africa

Every part of a watermelon is edible. You can pickle the rind, toast the seeds, eat the flesh salted or sugared or plain. You can also cut the watermelon in half, scoop out the flesh and use the remaining 'bowls' as fruit salad or drink containers. Probably brought to Europe by the Moors, the watermelon was transported to most of the Western world by slave ships.
