Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Meduseld

Answer: Places

Meduseld is the name for the halls of Theoden, King of Rohan. It is situated in the capital city of that realm, Edoras. The name is mentioned by Gandalf the White when he and his friends (Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli) have exited the forest of Fangorn and see the city of Edoras from a distance. Gandalf describes the halls as "Golden" and also informs his friends that the mind of Theoden has been poisoned by the wizard Saruman, who has fallen into evil.
2. Osgiliath

Answer: Places

Osgiliath is a bitterly contested and ruined city in the banks of the river Anduin. It is defended by Faramir, Captain of Gondor, on behalf of his father Denethor, who is the Steward. After meeting and capturing Frodo and Sam in the wastes of Ithilien, throughout the second half of the film, Faramir takes them to Osgiliath, intending to turn them over to his father, who wants to seize the One Ring, which Frodo must destroy, to aid the defense of Gondor.

While in Osgiliath, Faramir's forces are assaulted by Orcs and a Nazgul (Nazguls are undead creatures bound to the will of Sauron, the Dark Lord) and, while they manage to repel the assault, one of Faramir's lieutenants has bitter forecasts for the defense of the ruined city, telling his commander that before nightfall, they will be overwhelmed.
3. Isengard

Answer: Places

Isengard is the stronghold of Saruman the White, a powerful wizard who has fallen into evil and schemes to rule over the world of Middle-Earth under the orders of the Dark Lord Sauron. From very early into the film, Isengard is named as a major enemy and we can see Saruman himself talking telepathetically to Sauron, praising the might of the alliance between Isengard and Mordor, the Black Land. Before the end of the film, however, Isengard's might gets humbled by being defeated in the Battle of Helm's Deep by the Men of Rohan and an Elvish detachment and flooded due to the actions of the Ents, Shepherds of the Trees.
4. Grima

Answer: Characters

Grima, also called Wormtongue, is an advisor to Theoden, King of Rohan, but secretly in league with the wizard Saruman, aiding him in poisoning the King's mind. He manages to get Theoden's nephew, Eomer, exiled from Rohan, but his cunning is of no avail when Gandalf the White heals the King.

Theoden, understanding the extent of Grima's treachery, which cost even the life of his son, banishes Grima and momentarily thinks of decapitating him, but is persuaded to let him live by Aragorn. Grima reciprocates for this act of mercy by spitting on Aragorn's hand, before harking off to his master, Saruman.
5. Eomer

Answer: Characters

Eomer is the nephew of Theoden, King of Rohan. He is loyal to his King and tries to warn him of the danger the wizard Saruman poses to the realm. For this, he gets exiled from Rohan, as a result of the machinations of Grima Wormtongue. Eomer takes his men and sets out for the north, but he is eventually found by Gandalf the White, who has healed Theoden's mind in the meantime. Together, followed by Eomer's 2000-strong contingent, they turn the tide and rescue the besieged people of Rohan at Helm's Deep.
6. Eowyn

Answer: Characters

Eowyn is the niece of Theoden, King of Rohan and younger sister of Eomer. The poisoning of her uncle's mind by the treacherous Grima Wormtongue, coupled with the death of her cousin, Theodred, in battle, and Grima's persistent romantic overtures are, however, having a negative effect on her spirits when we first see her. Later, after Theoden's health is restored and Grima gets banished, the develops a mixture of love and admiration for Aragorn of the Dunedain, as well as a desire to prove herself in the field of battle.

She is tasked by Theoden with leading the people to Helm's Deep midway through the film, when they get attacked by Warg-Riders from Isengard, which the men stay behind to repel, a task she accomplishes. Later, she is tasked with getting the women, children and infirm into the caves behind Helm's Deep, contrary to her wishes to participate in the battle.
7. Faramir

Answer: Characters

Faramir is a Captain of Gondor, son of the Steward Denethor. We see him in the second half of the film, while setting an ambush for the evil Haradrim, men from the South who are servants of the Dark Lord Sauron. In the process, Faramir encounters and captures Frodo and Sam, who were trying to get inside Mordor and destroy the One Ring.

Initially mistaking them for spies, he becomes aware of their possession of the Ring, which his father wanted to use for the defense of Gondor, not wishing to understand that the Ring can only corrupt and destroy. Faramir takes the two Hobbits to Osgiliath and in the process we learn that he wants to prove himself worthy of his father's love, having been denied it all over his life. Ultimately, knowing that this might cost him his head, Faramir lets the Hobbits go and continue the Quest, while he himself stands with a small band of men in the ruins of the city of Osgiliath, awaiting an overwhelming attack.
8. Fangorn

Answer: Places

The forest of Fangorn is a very old forest near the realm of Rohan. Throughout the first half of the film, while escaping from a band of evil orcs holding them captive, the Hobbits Merry and Pippin find refuge in the forest where they encounter and eventually befriend Treebeard, the foremost among the Ents, the Shepherds of the Trees. Later, Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli, who were trying to liberate Merry and Pippin, also arrive in the forest where they meet the wizard Gandalf, whom they thought dead. Gandalf informs them of the circumstances in Middle-Earth and tells them that the first task is to aid the beleaguered kingdom of Rohan. Later, Treebeard rouses his peers and, determined not to let the massive destruction of the woodlands by the wizard Saruman, the Ents flood Isengard and play a major role in destroying the forces of the wizard Saruman.
9. Ring of Barahir

Answer: Objects

The Ring of Barahir is a ring worn by Aragorn of the Dunedain, a heirloom signifying that he comes from the House of Isildur, a royal line that can rule the great kingdom of Gondor. The Ring is described by the treacherous Grima Wormtongue, when he narrates to his master, the wizard Saruman, who was accompanying Gandalf the White when the latter healed Theoden, King of Rohan. Saruman, once hearing that a Man was among Gandalf's friends, asks whether he is from Gondor. Grima replies that he is from the North and adds, "Yet he bore a strange ring. Two serpets with emerald eyes. One devouring, the other crowned in gold flowers." Saruman identifies the ring correctly and we can see a drawing of it in the book he is holding, but then proceeds to dismiss the importance of the fact, claiming that it matters nothing since the line of Isildur has been broken.

The course of this film and the next one, "The Return of the King", prove him wrong, however.
10. Horn of Helm Hammerhand

Answer: Objects

The Horn of Helm Hammerhand is a war horn, belonging once to Helm, a King of Rohan. It is to be found in the fortress of Helm's Deep, where the people of the realm find refuge, anticipating an attack by the wizard Saruman and his armies. The battle takes indeed place at Helm's Deep and dominates the last third of the film. Rohan's men and a detachment of elves fight valiantly, but are hard-pressed and retreat to the insides of the Keep.

When the King, Theoden, decides to make a gallant last stand, he instructs the dwarf Gimli to blow the horn, echoing more glorious days of the past.

As the men charge, Gimli blows the horn, the sun rises and the wizard Gandalf arrives with reinforcements which turn the tide of the battle.
