Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which country was the 1984 Eurovision Song Contest held?

Luxembourg held it. Their venue, the Theatre Municipal in the city of Luxembourg, was so small that attendees were limited to "VIPs, press and members of each country's delegation" (www.eurovision.tv)
2. Which country won the 1984 Eurovision Song Contest?

Answer: Sweden

Sweden won with their entry "Diggi-Loo Diggi-Ley"(no translation for this one...), sung by a group called Herreys. They beat out second-place Ireland by eight points.
3. The UK's 1984 entry was a song called "Love Games". Who sang it?

Answer: Belle & the Devotions

While all the possible answers are British pop groups of the 1980s, the one that sang the 1984 Eurovision entry was Belle & the Devotions. This group was essentially Kit Rolfe with two backing singers on stage. However, the backing singers weren't singing - there were other singers behind the stage doing the backing vocals.
4. The Swedish entry in the 1984 Eurovision competition was sung by a group called Herreys. Their choreography is described as "spectacular" (www.eurovision.tv). What colour boots were they wearing during their performance?

Answer: gold

Apparently they dazzled the judges with their gold boots. The song roughly translated into a story about a man who finds a magical pair of golden shoes. He puts them on, says a magic word and makes the wish that everyone would have a similar pair of shoes.
5. The current rules stated that each country had to sing in their own official language - but there are a number of countries with more than one official language. How many entries in the 1984 Eurovision Song Contest were sung entirely in French?

Answer: three

Three countries sang their entries in French this year. They were

Belgium - "Avanti la vie" ("Go Forward in Life")
France - "Autant d'amoureux que d'étoiles" ("As Many Lovers as Stars") and
Luxembourg - "100% d'amour" ("100% of Love").

Only France could get away with that title...
6. Which two countries withdrew from the 1984 Eurovision Song Contest?

Answer: Greece and Israel

Greece chose not to participate, for reasons unknown. Israel had a good reason. Their Remembrance Day falls right in the contest period, and not for the first time, the days clashed.
7. One country returned to Eurovision after staying out for at least one year. Which country came back?

Answer: Ireland

Ireland came back after being away for one year. Their entry, "Terminal 3", was sung by Linda Martin and placed second.
8. Who was the presenter at the 1984 Eurovision Song Contest?

The other names given are all French television presenters.
9. There's always a halftime - what was the entertainment for the halftime of the 1984 Eurovision Song Contest?

Answer: Prague Theatre of Illuminated Drawings

It was the Prague Theatre of Illuminated Drawings which entertained viewers during the break. One can neither remember nor find references to the actual performance...

Pierre Joris is a poet, Michel Majerus was an artist and Pierre-Joseph Redoute was an artist, all from Luxembourg.
10. Nineteen countries vied for the 1984 Eurovision Song crown. That means there should have been a 1st position, 2nd position, 3rd etc, all the way to 19th, right? Wrong - or is it? How many countries, if any, tied for position?

Answer: four

There were two ties. Belgium and Italy tied for fifth place. Germany and The Netherlands tied for thirteenth position.
