Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At number ten in the poll is Eric Clapton for "Crossroads", recorded live at Winterland in San Francisco in March 1968 and released later that year on Cream's "Wheels of Fire" album. What, though, is Clapton's middle name?

Answer: Patrick

Eric Patrick Clapton was born in Ripley, Surrey on the outskirts of London in 1945. Nicknamed "Slowhand", he was awarded a C.B.E. for services to music in 2004. He is the first (and 15 years later still the only) person to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame three times: he first entered the Hall as a member of The Yardbirds in 1992, earned a second induction a year later as a member of Cream, and was then honored for the third time as a solo artist in 2000. Clapton was voted number two on "Rolling Stone" magazine's poll of the "100 Greatest Guitarists".
2. Coming in at number nine is Randy Rhodes for "Crazy Train", recorded in 1980 as a member of Ozzy Osbourne's band and released on the "Blizzard of Ozz" album. What is the name of the band formed by Rhodes when he was still in high school and with whom he played from 1975 until he joined Osbourne in 1979?

Answer: Quiet Riot

Born Randall William Rhoads in Santa Monica CA in 1956, Randy Rhodes and schoolmate Kelly Garni founded a band named Little Women when they were both still only 16. In 1975, the group added vocalist Kevin DuBrow and changed its name to Quiet Riot. The band quickly gained popularity on the club scene in Los Angeles and Rhodes remained with the group until recruited by Ozzy Osbourne in 1979.
"Crazy Train", co-written by Rhodes, Osbourne and the band's bass player Bob Daisley, was the first single released from the "Blizzard of Ozz" album.
Rhodes died at the age of just 25 in 1982 while touring with the band. Rhodes and the band's makeup artist, Rachel Youngblood, were passengers in a small plane when the pilot decided to 'buzz' the band's tour bus. He succeeded twice, but on the third attempt he clipped the bus with one of the plane's wings with disastrous results for all three people aboard.
3. At number eight are Don Felder and Joe Walsh for "Hotel California", recorded in 1976 as members of Eagles. In 1998, the track was voted the best guitar solo of all time by readers of the "Guitarist" magazine. In the 1990s, Joe Walsh toured and made albums as a member of which music icon's "All-Star Band"?

Answer: Ringo Starr

Born Joseph Fidler Walsh in Wichita KS in 1947, Joe Walsh played with The James Gang and barnstorm before joining Eagles in 1975. Following the break-up of Eagles in 1980, Walsh played with or produced albums for numerous stars including Dan Fogelberg, The Who's John Entwistle, Eagles band-mate Don Henley, The BeeGees' Andy Gibb, Wilson Pickett and Steve Winwood.

He also produced numerous solo albums. In the early 1990s, Walsh joined the likes of Billy Preston, Nils Lofgren, Todd Rundgren and Dave Edmunds on tour and made two live album under the auspice of Ringo Starr and His All-Star Band.

In 1998, the band featured Brian Wilson, Alanis Morissette, Ozzy Osbourne, Tom Petty, Steven Tyler, Paul McCartney and George Harrison for the "Vertical Man" album.
4. At number seven is Kirk Hammett for "One", recorded in 1988 and released on Metallica's "...And Justice for All" album. The following year, "One" was released as a single, becoming the group's first Billboard Top 40 hit. When Hammett joined Metallica in 1983, the guitarist he replaced went on to form which group?

Answer: Megadeth

Kirk Lee Hammett, born in San Francisco CA in 1962, founded the thrash metal band Exodus in 1980. Three years later he joined Metallica, replacing the band's original lead guitarist Dave Mustaine, who formed the Los Angeles heavy metal group Megadeth later that same year. Hammett's first appearance as a member of Metallica was on the 1983 album "Kill 'Em All".
Of the alternatives, Hollywood Rose went on to become Guns 'n Roses; Kiss had already been around for a decade, having formed in 1973; and Mötley Crüe were slightly earlier, formed in 1981.
5. Coming in at number six is Slash for "November Rain", recorded during 1990-91 and first released on the 1991 Guns n' Roses album "Use Your Illusion I". What, though, is the real name of the guitarist known as Slash?

Answer: Saul Hudson

Slash was born Saul Hudson in Hampstead, north London in 1965. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012 as a member of Guns n' Roses. Slash left Guns n' Roses in 1996. He continued playing, first in the band Slash's Snakepit, before forming Velvet Revolver in 2002.
Slash was voted number two in a 2009 "Time" magazine poll of "Greatest Electric Guitar Players". Another of his guitar riffs, "Sweet Child of Mine" was voted number one in a 2004 poll of the "100 Greatest Guitar Riff" by "Guitarist" magazine.
Written by the band's vocalist Axl Rose, "November Rain" was released as a single in 1992 and reached number four in the UK and number three in the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart. At 8 minutes and 57 seconds, it also became the longest song ever to reach the Top Ten of the Billboard chart.
Of the alternatives, Adam Keefe Horovitz is better known as Ad-Rock, guitarist for the Beastie Boys; Richard Alfonso Martinez uses the name Oz Fox in his role as lead guitarist for glam metal band Stryper; and Jakey Lou Williams played guitar with Ozzy Osbourne's band under the name Jake E. Lee.
6. At number five is the legendary Jimi Hendrix with "All Along the Watchtower". Written and recorded by Bob Dylan in 1967, Hendrix released his version on the "Electric Ladyland" album the following year. With which release did Hendrix score his highest-charting single on either side of the Atlantic prior to his death?

Answer: Purple Haze

Born Johnny Allen Hendrix in Seattle WA in 1942, the career and the relatively short life of Jimi Hendrix, who died aged 27 in September 1970, have been well-documented. What is amazing is that he only started playing the guitar at the age of 15. What's more, he was left-handed and learned to play upside down on a right-handed guitar. By the time of the Woodstock Festival in 1969, which he headlined, he was the world's highest-paid performer. His statue stands on the Isle of Wight, where he headlined the 1970 festival shortly before his death.
Hendrix was given a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1991 and a year later the Jimi Hendrix Experience was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
It seems amazing now that Hendrix scored only one Top 20 single in the U.S. -- with "All Along the Watchtower" in 1968, which reached number 20. He did top the UK singles chart posthumously, in 1970 with "Voodoo Chile" which included a B-side of "Hey Joe/All Along the Watchtower".
During his life, Hendrix scored four Top Ten singles in the U.K. "Hey Joe" in 1966 and "The Wind Cries Mary" in 1967 both reached number six. "All Along the Watchtower" reached number five in 1968. His best-performing single, though, was "Purple Haze", in 1967 from the "Are You Experienced" album, which made it to number three.
7. Rocking in at number four is David Gilmour with "Comfortably Numb" from Pink Floyd's iconic 1979 album "The Wall". On which Pink Floyd album did Gilmour make his first appearance in the band?

Answer: A Saucerful of Secrets

Released in 1968, "A Saucerful of Secrets" was Pink Floyd's second studio album, the first with David Gilmour, and the last with Syd Barrett. This is the only non-compilation Floyd album to feature five members of the group, although Gilmour and Barrett only both performed on one track, "Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun".
"The Piper at the Gates of Dawn" was the band's first album, and the only one of which Gilmour did not appear.
"Comfortably Numb" was the last song ever performed by Gilmour, Roger Waters, Rick Wright and Nick Mason together. They re-untied in 2005 for "Live 8" in London, marking their first appearance as a foursome in 24 years. Rick Wright's death in 2008 also ensured that this would be their final performance.
8. At number three in the poll are Gary Rossington and Allen Collins with the ultimate two-guitar song "Freebird", recorded in Georgia in 1973 and first appearing on Lynyrd Skynyrd's debut album "(Pronounced 'Lĕh-'nérd 'Skin-'nérd)". Which of these band members did NOT die in the 1977 plane crash that effectively ended the first incarnation of Lynyrd Skynyrd?

Answer: Artimus Pyle

All members of the band were on the chartered Convair CV-300 that crashed into a forest a few miles from Gillsburg MS on the night on October 20, 1977. Lead vocalist Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines and backing vocalist Cassie Gaines were killed on impact, along with the band's assistant road manager and both pilots. The other band members all survived, suffering serious injuries.
In the 2014 incarnation of Lynyrd Skynyrd, only guitarist Gary Rossington remains from the high-school friends who first played under the name My Backyard almost 50 years earlier. Allen Collins died in 1990 following complications arising after a serious car accident. Bassist Larry Junstrom joined Ronnie Van Zant's brother, Donnie, in 38 Special in 1977. Original drummer Bob Burns left in the early 1970s and was replaced by Artimus Pyle.
Lynyrd Skynyrd were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006.
The 14-minute live performance of "Freebird" by Rossington and Allen on BBC TV's "Old Grey Whistle Test" was always the clip that topped viewers' polls to be shown again.
9. At number two is Eddie van Halen with "Eruption", recorded in 1977 and first released the following year on Van Halen's self-titled debut album. In which country was Eddie van Halen born?

Answer: The Netherlands

The guitarist, keyboard player and backing vocalist for Van Halen since the band was formed in 1972, he was born Edward Lodewijk van Halen in 1955 in the city of Nijmegen, which is in the southeastern part of the Netherlands near the German border.
In recent polls of the "All-Time Greatest Guitarist", Eddie Halen ranked number eight in a 2011 poll in "Rolling Stone" magazine and number one in a 2012 poll in "Guitar World".
Drummer Alex van Halen is the band's other original member still remaining. Eddie's son, Wolfgang, joined the band on bass in 2007. The other well-known band member is vocalist David Lee Roth, who fronted Van Halen from 1974 until 1985 and re-joined in 2007.
10. Topping the "Guitar World" magazine's poll of "100 Greatest Guitar Solos" is Jimmy Page with "Stairway to Heaven". Recorded in 1971, it was first released on the "Led Zeppelin IV" album and then as a single the following year. For most Led Zeppelin recordings from the second album onwards, Page used a guitar sold to him by Joe Walsh: what type of guitar?

Answer: Gibson Les Paul

James Patrick Page OBE was born in 1944 in Heston on the western outskirts of London. He became an established session guitarist whilst still a student and played on many hits of the era including two tracks on debut album by the Kinks and on the first single release by The Who.
Jimmy Page bought the 1959 Gibson Les Paul Standard (No. 1) from Joe Walsh for $1200, and he used this guitar for most of the Led Zeppelin studio recordings.
A 1959 Fender Telecaster given to him by Jeff Beck was used for the "Stairway to Heaven" solo. He used a 1961 Danelectro 3021 tuned to DADGAD for some live performances, notably "Kashmir". The 1967 Vox 12-string was one of Page's earlier guitars -- he used this during the Yardbirds era both for live performances and for studio work on the "Little Games" album.
