Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who had a hit in North America with his debut release, "Baby Hold On" in 1984?

Answer: Eddie Money

Hitting number five, this would prove to be Money's biggest hit on the Cashbox chart in the USA until it was matched by his 1986 hit, "Take Me Home Tonight" and his biggest hit in Canada until 1990's "Peace in Our Time" peaked at number three on the RPM charts.
2. "Sunspot Baby" (1976) was the opening track on side two of whose mega selling 1976 album, "Night Moves"?

Answer: Bob Seger

"Night Moves" (1976) was the first album from Seger to credit The Silver Bullet Band, although some members such as Alto Reed, Drew Abbot and Charlie Allen Martin had been backing Seger for several years.
The track "Sunspot Baby" (1976) is a Chuck Berry influenced track, as are other tracks on the album such as "Rock and Roll Never Forgets" and "Mary Lou" (both 1976).
3. "Hello Hooray" (1973) opened the album and "I Love the Dead" (1973) closed it. The title track, "Billion Dollar Babies" (1973) was released as a single, but who was the artist?

Answer: Alice Cooper

Cooper's "Billion Dollar Babies" (1973) was his first album to top the Billboard 200 chart in the USA and was also a number one album in the UK.
Of the tracks released from the album, "Billion Dollar Babies" (1973) was the worst performing, not even cracking the top 50 in the USA and certainly not matching the success of "No More Mr. Nice Guy" (1973) which got to number 25 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the USA and was a top ten hit in the UK.
4. "Baby The Angels Are Here" (1978) was a track on the "No Smoke Without Fire" (1978) album, which saw bass player Martin Turner on vocals. Which band from Torquay, that also featured the twin guitars of Laurie Wisefield and Andy Powell, released this album?

Answer: Wishbone Ash

Wishbone Ash achieved most of their success in the early to mid 70s with albums such as "Pilgrimage" (1971), "Wishbone Four" (1973) and the multi selling "Argus" (1972).
Sadly by the late 70s they had started to slip from the minds of the record buying masses - but still retained a loyal fan base - and although "No Smoke Without Fire" (1978) was a fine album, possibly the band's best since "Argus" (1972), it is now largely forgotten.
5. Six year old Elián Gonzalez became the centre of a complex and much-publicised international custody case in 2000. He was one of a few survivors of an attempt to reach Miami from Cuba by boat, and was eventually returned to his father in Cuba. Which band recorded the track "Baby Elián" on their 2001 album, "Know Your Enemy"?

Answer: Manic Street Preachers

"Baby Elián" (2001) offers the views of the band on the strained relations between the United States and Cuba in 2000 during the Elián González affair when his mother, as part of a group of refugees attempting to reach the United States by boat, drowned and Elián was rescued by American fishermen.

Once discharged from hospital, Elián was placed in the temporary custody of his uncle who lived in Miami, and wanted Elián to remain with him. But Elián's father, from whom his mother had been estranged, wanted him returned to Cuba.
Following a tense series of talks between USA and Cuba, Elián was returned to Cuba where he then grew up, attended college and in 2023 entered politics, being elected as a Member of the National Assembly of People's Power.
6. Which former member of Humble Pie had a big hit in the USA in 1975 with the track, "Baby, I Love Your Way"?

Answer: Peter Frampton

Frampton quit Humble Pie in 1971 and initially struggled for commercial success, until his fourth album, "Frampton" (1975), which yielded the hit singles "Show Me the Way" and "Baby, I Love Your Way" (both 1975).
These tracks were re-released the following year, taken from his live album, "Frampton Comes Alive!" (1976), which is still his biggest selling album by some margin and is considered by many to be one of the best live albums ever released.
7. Which artist had a track entitled "Werewolf, Baby!" (2010) on his interestingly titled album, "Hellbilly Deluxe 2: Noble Jackals, Penny Dreadfuls and the Systematic Dehumanization of Cool" (2010)?

Answer: Rob Zombie

Although the album is credited to Rob Zombie (the man), Zombie himself stated that this album was actually a band effort, and in much the same vein as Alice Cooper, the band is named Rob Zombie.

As with his previous three releases, this album was a top ten hit in the USA on the Billboard 200 and was also his highest charting album in the UK since his debut album, 1998s "Hellbilly Deluxe: 13 Tales of Cadaverous Cavorting Inside the Spookshow International".

"Hellbilly Deluxe 2" (2010) did spawn two singles, "What?" and "Sick Bubblegum" (both 2010) and they while performed quite well in various rock charts, neither troubled any of the national charts.
8. "Baby I Love You" (1963) was originally a hit for the Ronettes, but which punk band took it in to the top ten of the UK charts in 1980?

Answer: Ramones

As well as being a hit for the Ronettes in 1963, the track was also a hit for Andy Kim in 1969, being a top twenty hit in Australia and New Zealand, a top ten hit in the USA on the Billboard Hot 100 and a number one in Canada.
It was also a hit in the UK for Dave Edmunds who reached the top ten in the national charts with it and then along came Ramones and gave us the version that stands out among all others. The band themselves hated the song, and Joey Ramone was actually the only member of the band to sing on it after Johnny, Dee Dee and Marky all refused to have anything to do with it.
9. "I Can't Quit You Baby" (1956) was first recorded by bluesman Otis Rush, but which band famously covered this Willie Dixon composition on their 1969 debut album?

Answer: Led Zeppelin

With tracks such as "Good Times Bad Times", "Dazed and Confused" and "Communication Breakdown" (all 1969), has there ever been a finer debut album than "Led Zeppelin" (1969)?

"I Can't Quit You Baby" (1956) is now considered a 12 bar blues standard and has been recorded by many artists, and interestingly also appeared as a live track on Led Zeppelin's final album, "Coda" (1982), recorded during a soundcheck in London in 1970.
10. In 1975, Lou Reed had an album track and an album about a baby, but where was Reed's baby from?

Answer: Coney Island

"Coney Island Baby" (1975) was Reed's sixth studio album, and returned him to the album charts in many countries after the failure of his previous album, 1975s "Metal Machine Music".

"Coney Island Baby" (1975) is one of Reed's most delicate albums with much of it inspired by his partner of the time, Rachel Humphreys, a transgender woman from New Jersey. Although it seems to have slipped from favour these days, it is still an album that is well worth a listen.
