Loosely translated from its original Greek, "Eureka" means "I have found it." It was famously used by Greek mathematician Archimedes when he discovered the way to measure the volume of an irregularly shaped object. Archimedes had been tasked by Hiero II of Syracuse to determine the weight of a crown he had contracted a goldsmith to create for him. Hiero believed he had been cheated by the goldsmith, whom he suspected had replaced some of the gold for the crown with silver.
Archimedes initially had some trouble determining a method of weighing the crown to determine its composition. Upon entering a bathtub, Archimedes realized that the water displaced from him entering the tub could be used to determine the weight, and thus the volume of an irregularly shaped object. He shouted "Eureka!" upon his discovery, and eventually proved that the goldsmith had indeed stolen some of the gold and swapped it for silver.
