Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What SJHL team won the Centennial Cup in the 1987-88 season with future NHL players Rod Brind'Amour and Curtis Joseph?

Answer: Notre Dame Hounds

The Notre Dame Hounds originally entered the SJHL in 1970 and folded in 1976 after a dismal 7-win season. After a 12-year absence, the Hounds went 53-5-2 in the 1987-88 regular season, and captured the Centennial Cup (which became the Royal Bank Cup in 1996).
2. What SJHL city's nickname is the same as the NHL team from Detroit?

Answer: Weyburn

The Weyburn Red Wings miraculously won the 2005 Royal Bank Cup as the host team after finishing 5th in the SJHL's Sherwood Division and being eliminated in the first round of the SJHL playoffs. No matter how well a host team fares in their league, they automatically qualify for the Royal Bank Cup, which gave the Red Wings their outside chance at the Cup.
3. What SJHL team won the league championship in both 1985 and 1989?

Answer: Estevan

The Estevan Bruins began play in the SJHL in 1969. Their home rink was the Estevan Civic Auditorium.
4. What SJHL city founded their hockey club in 1908?

Answer: Melville Millionaires

The Melville Millionaires lost the 2007 SJHL final to the powerhouse Humboldt Broncos. The Millionaires were still seeking their first championship.
5. What SJHL team takes their nickname from a breed of dog?

Answer: Yorkton

The Yorkton Terriers won back-to-back league titles in 2005 and 2006, bringing their total number of league championships to 4. Over the years, games between Yorkton and arch-rival Melville have routinely featured brawls in and behind the stands among the bitterly faithful.
6. What team won 5 SJHL championships in the 1950s, and has played in both the Manitoba Junior and Western Canada Hockey Leagues?

Answer: Flin Flon

The Flin Flon Bombers have churned out many NHL players, the most notable being Bobby Clarke.
7. What SJHL team played in the Centennial Arena, also known as "The Cage"?

Answer: Nipawin

The Nipawin Hawks began their first SJHL campaign in 1985-86 and won a league championship in 1990.
8. What SJHL team played in the Northern Lights Palace?

Answer: Melfort

The Melfort Mustangs first season in the SJHL was 1988-89. They finished their first and second seasons under .500, but followed that up with 13 straight seasons over .500. They were SJHL champions in 1992 and 1996.
9. What SJHL team won Royal Bank Cup in 2003 and 2008?

Answer: Humboldt

In both 2003 and 2008, the Humboldt Broncos lost to the Camrose Kodiaks in the round robin portion of the Royal Bank Cup. However, in both of those years, the Broncos ended up defeating the Kodiaks in the championship game. The Royal Bank Cup is awarded to the Canadian Junior A Champion.
10. What SJHL team is shared by a city and a town banking each side of the North Saskatchewan River?

Answer: Battleford & North Battleford

The Battlefords North Stars started in the SJHL as the Battleford Barons. They changed their name to the North Stars in 1983 and play their games in the North Battleford Civic Centre.
