Harry is consistently discontented. He hardly ever smiles and often highlights the negative side of circumstances, never being seen in a state of happiness. As trains only arrive in Hatley a few times a day, he runs multiple side businesses from his station box: planting vegetables, repairing bicycles and clocks, raising farm animals (pigs, turkeys, and chickens) for the staff's meals, providing haircuts, and accepting wagers.

The storyline revolves around the Hatley railway station. A new station manager is appointed on the same day Dr. Beeching has plans for reconstructing the railways. Dr. Beeching was a real person; he was the chairman of British Railways. In the show, the new manager, Cecil Parkin, wants the station to become more efficient so it won't be one of those that are closed down. Some of his ideas upset some of the staff, but it might be the only way to save the station.
