Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. For how long did Tom sleep after his mushroom trip?

Answer: A day

Tom awakens the morning after his psychedelic mushroom trip to find the phone ringing. It appears that he was asleep for a full day. Driving out to the historical society, he meets up with Patricia to discuss what they've uncovered, and he learns that Gerrie connected the note of a plague to the year 1702. With that, they deduced the owner of the journal and the possibility that the cursed pendant would have been buried with Richard Warren, the first mayor of Widow's Bay.

After Wyck dug up Richard Warren's coffin, they brought it inside and waited for Tom. They did, however, move Richard upstairs, leaving the coffin down in the office. They only did this because he's still alive.
2. What method does Patricia initially think is the only means through which they can communicate with Richard Warren?

Answer: Via a notepad

Although the matter of Richard Warren still being alive is a dire concern, it turns out that he's not willing to speak to anyone besides the Lord Protector of the island, and Patricia and Wyck both assumed that meant Tom. What they need Tom to do is ask about the pendant; they tried to open it, but it only led to injury.

Tom lets himself into Richard's old bedroom to find the first mayor seated on his bed, hunched over in the dark, and he starts by trying to write notes to Richard, assuming (based on Patricia's suggestion) that this is the only way to get through to him. It works well enough at the start-- Richard does respond-- but Tom realizes that they can just talk instead.
3. Richard admits that he signed a pact that was essentially a deal with which of these?

Answer: A demon

Tom is upfront with his first concern, chiefly that he doesn't know how Richard Warren is still alive after more than three centuries. Warren is candid about this, claiming that he was tricked by a devil and betrayed by his lessers. It's evil that keeps him alive. Tom asks about the pendant as well, but Richard asks that he loosen the ropes around his hands first, something he's initially quite hesitant to do. But it works, and Richard easily opens the pendant and reveals a small scroll inside.

Richard explains that the scroll seemed to promise salvation. When he founded the island, he and his people struggled through their first months, unable to find any morsel of food to eat, but one day he ate the black mushrooms that grew from the island. He thanked God for the mercy, but something else came to him instead-- a demon, the island itself. Richard was starving, but the island was starving as well. He signed a pact and offered covenant in return.

Tom admits that he believes the island spoke to him, but he hasn't acted on anything as of yet. Richard says that the island knows that frightened men will do desperate things, but he doesn't say more than this. Instead, he wants to see his children's belongings.
4. Richard claims that the curse on Widow's Bay may lift if he can do which of the following?

Answer: Sail away from its influence

Tom brings Richard through the museum of Widow's Bay early days, taking him before his children's toys and allowing him to recollect their lives. He admits that every second of his time in the coffin brought new thoughts about his children's deaths. Coming across a realistic bust of his second wife, Sarah, he grips its face in his hands and pokes the eyes out in anger.

Richard notes that even though Tom is bound to the island by covenant, Richard is the last bound by blood, and there is a solution to be had if they take him out to sea, past the point where sailors fear. Once he's beyond the island's grip, without the hex upon him, he believes he will age, die, and sever his bloodline, freeing the island from the curse.

Wyck is apprehensive about this. He knows the dangers that befall sailors out past the island and he knows there's no guarantee this plan works. Tom has to admit that he feels he experienced a presence the previous night; they have to try something. Wyck ultimately relents, but only if Richard remains in his coffin for the trip.
5. Patricia manages to distract Sheriff Bechir away from the museum by doing which of these?

Answer: Stealing his car

Tom tells the news to Richard, letting him know that they will sail him out to sea, but they will need to ensure he's in his coffin heading down to the dock. He lies about letting him out once they're on the boat. Fortunately, Richard agrees. The plan is nearly interrupted in its entirety when Sheriff Bechir arrives at the museum, possibly due to Patricia's earlier screaming. She makes an ill-advised distraction, even going so far as to get behind the wheel of Bechir's police vehicle and drive it away. It works.

Before long, Tom, Wyck, and Richard (in his coffin) are riding out to the open ocean into Widow's Bay's own Bermuda Triangle. Once they get to the dead zone, they'll have to be cautious. There's about two minutes of gap time to get Richard across the last buoy, and to do that, Tom will need to ride his coffin out in a dinghy.
6. Who, of these, convinces Evan to learn the truth behind his father's life?

Answer: A non-islander

Using the opportunity while his father is out, Evan has Kelly, one of the visiting girls from Boston, over at the house. She asks what his dad's deal is, but Evan says he just thinks he's a liar and there's not much more to look into. She suggests that it would be worth finding out for sure, even going so far as to head into his bedroom to fish around for more information something that Evan never really stops. Kelly insists that Evan will have the moral high ground, so it's okay.

Sheriff Bechir drives a crying Patricia back to her home instead of bringing her back to the station but he asks her to be honest about what's going on since some weird events keep happening in Widow's Bay. She plays naive, but she learns that the town is forming some sort of action committee. Although Bechir understands that Tom is trying to prevent anyone from panicking, for whatever reason, he needs them all to be on the same side.
7. Once Tom and Wyck put Richard back into his coffin, they have no intent to let him back out. Does he get back out?

Answer: Yes

Out at sea, Tom attempts to keep his wits about him while he and Wyck listen to their radio, discovering that, per usual, nearby sailors are being toyed with by the island. They near the buoys as Wyck heads below deck to check on things, and he instructs Tom to make sure the coffin is secure. It leads Tom to get into a conversation with Richard in which it's revealed that there was never an intent to let the former mayor back out of the coffin.

Tom attempts to appeal to Wyck, asking why they don't grant the immortal man a final request by letting him out before he dies, but Wyck is insistent that it's not possible to do this; you can't trust a man who knows that death is coming for him.
8. When he was much younger, Wyck encountered which of these on a fishing expedition?

Answer: A sea creature

Wyck reveals that last time there was a 'bad time' on the island, it was very tough, and now that the island has awakened again, he's on his guard. He reveals that back when he was sixteen, he went out on a fishing expedition just as the activities in Widow's Bay hit a crescendo. He and his friends, including Gerrie Doyle's brother, hit the waves before something came for their boat from below-- something with tentacles. Wyck got out of the boat in an effort to swim to shore, and that was when what it was grabbed his foot. But it turned out not to be the creature, but Gerrie's brother. Ultimately, Wyck made it, but Gerrie's brother didn't.

Of course the story didn't much matter in terms of convincing Tom to hold strong; he already let Richard out.

Back at home, Evan and Kelly searched through Tom's belongings to find a lockbox in one of his dresser drawers. Using a paper clip Kelly jimmied it open to find a pile of keepsakes... including a photo in which his mother was depicted holding him in a hospital bed. It was an odd thing to find; he'd always been told she died in childbirth.
9. Patricia tries to explain the recent events in Widow's Bay to the Sheriff. What does he decide to do with this knowledge?

Answer: File his resignation

At Patricia's, Bechir gets the whole run-down about the situation and ponders it for a few minutes before letting her know he's out. She may have only told him half of what she knows about Widow's Bay, but he didn't want to be there before and he doesn't want to be there now. He tells Patricia to pass his week's notice over to Tom when she sees him next, wishes her luck, and sends her on her way.

On the boat, Richard has one final, haphazard meal before, at last, they near the last buoy. Richard wonders what his last words and last thought will be before Wyck prompts them to get into the dinghy. And that's when they hit rough water. Richard realizes, at that moment, that he'd much rather prefer to live, and it's fortunate timing for him since the rowboat seems to have jostled off the back of the boat and gone adrift. Tom and Wyck try to keep their cool and think of an alternative plan, but Richard attacks them instead.
10. Does Wyck end up crossing the last buoy out at sea?

Answer: No

Richard takes a swing and briefly knocks Tom out and while he's on the ground, Wyck tries to keep the ghoul mayor occupied. Tom is fortunate that he can find the harpoon gun out on the deck, but Richard gets the jump on him, managing to wrest the gun from his hands and toss it aside, all while the boat keeps moving onward to the buoy. Wyck manages to wrap a rope around Richard and push him back into the coffin, sealing him away and strapping it shut once more.

The problem, as they near the buoy, is that Wyck can't be onboard or else he'll risk disappearing like every other sailor who makes it out that far, so Tom hands him a life preserver, kicks him off the boat, and puts all of his focus into keeping Richard shut in the box until he crosses the threshold. Interestingly, the plan works. By the time Tom opens the casket once more, all that's left is a skeleton and a pile of dust. He turns the boat around and hunts for Wyck, finding nothing, but ultimately reunites with him while he's looking for flares below deck. Wyck, stressed, has to admit that Tom did good this time, surprisingly, as they head home.

Back at the Loftis house, Evan can't help but keep staring at a photograph of himself and his mother taken well after his birth.

Meanwhile, at the Breakwater Inn, no one notices the painting on the wall depicting a young child being pulled out of the water in a raging storm, perhaps a hint that not everything is solved quite so simply.
