Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Arriving at Ruth's house, Tom is surprised to find her engaged in which activity?

Answer: Walking on a treadmill

Tom heads out alone from town hall during the middle of the big storm and proceeds to the local doctor's office, breaking in to read Ruth's medical history in hopes of some twist of fate that could prevent him from doing what needs to be done. Before long, however, he finds himself parked in front of her home. Patricia and Wyck both message him over the walkie talkie, giving conflicting recommendations. He leaves them with the instruction to keep people in the shelter and to make sure Evan is safe.

When Tom knocks on Ruth's door, she doesn't answer. He lets himself in instead, walking into her well-lit front hall and searching around, ultimately finding her by following her laboured breathing. It turns out that she's in her rec room, walking on her treadmill and listening to music. She seems to be keeping well.

Believing that Tom is there to bring her to the shelter, she volunteers to get ready quickly. He instead suggests they hunker down, and for that, she sprints upstairs to grab him a towel, excited to weather the storm with him. It makes the situation all the harder, naturally.
2. Bechir is informed that Chelle's baby is likely to need to be delivered during the storm, in the shelter. Which is true about this?

Answer: It would make the baby seven weeks early

In the shelter, Patricia and Wyck take stock of their supplies, realizing that they've overcrowded the space. Wyck, ever-cautious, advises that things turn fast when people are in confined spaces together, so they need to keep everyone calm. Naturally, that's when the lights begin to flicker.

In the medical room, the town doctor checks up on Chelle and indicates that nothing is wrong-- she may have felt a false alarm with regards to contractions, perhaps out of nerves. He does, however, take Bechir aside just outside the door to let him know that the baby is, in fact, coming. She may not be due for another seven weeks, but these are the circumstances they face.

At Ruth's, Ruth worries about her herb garden in the storm and makes herself some tea. Tom can't help but notice that the calendar on her fridge is full, absolutely packed with things to do (though most of this involves helping someone named Diedre down and up her porch stairs, which is something she's happy to do since it needs to be done for a neighbour). Tom has to excuse himself to think once he hears this.
3. Ruth offers to make Tom a cup of tea from her own herb garden. He ends up choosing the one that takes much longer to make. Which one?

Answer: The calming lavender and chamomile tea

Tom heads to the washroom and attempts to get through to the shelter on his walkie-talkie to no avail, but while he's there, he finds Ruth's pills in the bathroom cabinet. Knowing, from her medical records, that she isn't to take certain pills at the same time, he heads out with a plan.

Ruth offers him tea, getting him to choose between a pick-me-up peppermint or a calming chamomile from her garden, but choosing the latter, he's stuck waiting nearly a half-hour for it to steep. Ruth happily decides to take him for a tour of her house while they wait.

In the shelter, Patricia realizes that the locals are apt to make things antsier, indicating that past storms in Widow's Bay have lasted as long as ten days. It's why she asks Dale to look for anything to distract the more-than-hundred-thirty people in the shelter. Bechir asks Patricia where he can speak to Tom; she lies about knowing where he is. Meanwhile, Evan hangs out with Kelly and his friend, PJ, who lets them know he's found a way out of the shelter. Against his father's wishes, Evan goes along, following them to find a ladder that leads down, deeper than the shelter.
4. Dale, searching for an activity in the emergency shelter, comes across an old film canister that's addressed to which of these, specifically?

Answer: The offering

Dale, on a mission to find a pastime for the shelter, finds his way into a dark, unvisited room being used for storage, and there, he finds a number of old film canisters, one of which is simply labeled 'For THEM'. He plays it for himself, just to make sure it works, and it's a bit of a dire recording. A man appears on the film and addresses someone who, by committee, has been selected as an offering. The man insists that the offering will be making a noble sacrifice, and they should accept their fate, because it is for the betterment of Widow's Bay. It will save many people from great suffering.

At Ruth's, Tom is given a tour of the home before sitting down to pore over some old photo albums, some of which include Ruth's late boyfriend, Alfred, who she notes was bit by an animal (and became that animal) before he died. As she goes through the pages, noting all the people who made passes at her, she lands on a photo of her parents, who built the very house she still lives in (at least until her father was taken by that lake monster). Ruth, as it seems, has been through a lot, but living in Widow's Bay means learning to weather the storms that come.
5. In an effort to make her see his dilemma, Tom asks Ruth to solve the Trolley Problem for him. Ruth doesn't hesitate to say that she would do which of these?

Answer: Avoid pulling the lever altogether, possibly killing many

Tom has to call it out to Ruth-- there might be a way to avoid needing to 'weather the storm' altogether. He asks what she would be willing to do, bringing up the trolley problem as an example (though not the 'Trolley Problem' Widow's Bay faced in 1942, where they tried to build a trolley and the workers disappeared), but she says she wouldn't pull the lever at all. It's not the answer Tom wants. Even in the face of saving all those people, she still wouldn't do it; the runaway trolley, Ruth explains, is life, and she's the lever. You can't control the bad things that happen in life, and pulling the lever means actively killing someone.

Ruth is reminded of a lengthy Tennessee Williams quote she cross-stitched at one point. She can't read most of it, but the important part is that "we live in a perpetually-burning building and what we must save from it, all the time, is love."

Ruth notes that she's always worried about Tom because he has a tendency to hide from the truth. He wants Widow's Bay to be Martha's Vineyard, but it's never going to be. But that's okay.

Tom is distracted when he sees a brooch on her coffee table-- the very brooch passed down to her as a family heirloom, originally given to young Frances Warren by Sarah Westcott.

In the kitchen, once the timer goes off, Tom goes to grab their cups of tea. He crushes the medication and dumps it into Ruth's coffee mug before taking it out to her.
6. Tensions run high when it turns out that the rations in the emergency shelter have which issue?

Answer: They contain mold

In the shelter, Patricia, Rosemary, and others start to realize that the waiting townspeople (and non-locals) are getting extremely antsy and volatile. While handing out rations, they start to realize that some of the MREs and cans of water are moldy. It's a natural flashpoint; some want to lash out. Wyck calms the room down...at least until a local says they can go weeks without food, but not without water.

From the other room, Bechir watches as the situation starts to escalate. Chelle attempts to calm him down, saying that all of this will just be a funny story they tell their kid someday. Patricia and Rosemary find Bechir in the kitchen shortly after, searching for water. Fortunately, they've saved some for him.

A perfectly stable situation worsens when Rosemary decides to blab, indicating that after Tom had her do a whole geneology on Ruth, he left the shelter, and he and the others kept her out of whatever weird discussion they had as a result. Bechir has no choice but to confront Patricia about this, and as such he has the doctor barricade the door to the medical room until her returns. He has to go to Ruth's. Fast.
7. Under which of these locations is the sacrifice chamber for the island?

Answer: Town Hall

At Ruth's, Tom waits out the clock. He's the one to speak to break up the silence, bringing up Lauren's later days. She tried to talk to him about the island, he says, but he laughed it all off and teased her about it. He never understood why he didn't just listen to her, and after she had her stroke, he realized she was right. And worse, he still brought people to the island, hoping to bring a sense of normalcy for him and his son. He put too many lives at risk because of his decision. By the time he finishes saying this, he looks up to find Ruth unconscious.

He thinks she's dead, but she's actually just fallen asleep. She awakens when he places his hand on hers, and she resumes telling stories about her photos.

Under the town hall shelter, Evan, Kelly, and PJ find a series of old, wet tunnels and proceed down them to locate a number of doors, all leading to a chair with straps on the armrests.

In the shelter proper, Patricia and Wyck attempt to keep the townspeople at bay as the lights flicker. Someone, fiddling with knobs in a control panel on the wall, accidentally starts a concerning recording. Meanwhile, Dale plays the film reel marked 'For You', discovering that a body must be sacrificed for each toll of the Widow's Bay Church bell. Only then, when the covenant is fulfilled, will the island slumber.
8. Is Ruth the final descendant in the Warren bloodline?

Answer: No

Wyck and Patricia nearly manage to calm people down before the lights go out completely. Rallying the group, she reminds them all that they're all scared, but they're okay and they have each other; they can ride all of this out. As she pans the flashlight around, Dale emerges from the other room and starts to scream, exclaiming that the shelter is a death trap. Naturally, the shelter panics as a result.

At Ruth's, Tom tries to reach Patricia and tell the truth-- that Ruth isn't going. He asks for any hope that Evan is okay, but instead of getting a response, all he hears from the other side is screaming. Tom returns to the living room to find Ruth once again asleep on the couch, and though he brings a pillow down and considers his options, Ruth awakens.

She confesses something to him then-- she had an affair with a married man. She was in her forties and she wanted him to leave his wife, but he wouldn't. And as a result, she got pregnant and hid the fact. She wasn't in a good place, and that's what led her to give the child over to him and his wife to raise as their own. She watched her baby girl grow up from afar and she knows that she had a good life. Unfortunately, she died. But at least she got to watch her daughter grow up and fall in love with him-- Tom Loftis.
9. Who else arrives at Ruth's to follow through on the plot to kill her and stop the curse?

Answer: Bechir

Shocked that not only does the Warren bloodline not end with Ruth, but with Evan, Tom has no need to kill Ruth. He certainly couldn't kill his own son. Ruth explains that after the ferry voyage that caused Lauren's stroke, she continued to see Lauren at the 'old home' until her passing. The only reason she still works at town hall in her eighties is to be a part of her grandson's life. Before she can drink any more tea, Tom tosses the mug on the floor and begs her to tell who else she's told, but she's kept this a secret from everyone. It means that his son can never leave the island.

Tom, realizing he needs to get Ruth to the doctor on account of the pills in her tea, helps her up and embraces her... but that's the moment that Bechir arrives, turns the corner, and shoots her while her back is turned, despite Tom's protests. Bechir, having headed out once Patricia told him the truth behind the plan, did so impulsively to prevent his soon-to-be-born child from falling victim to the island's curse. Unfortunately, that didn't much matter with the bloodline not ending there.

When Tom explains there's someone else, Bechir aims the gun at him, insisting that he be told the truth, but Tom can't give that info. He feigns ignorance.
10. As a new day dawns in Widow's Bay, the church bell tolls how many times, signalling the number of sacrifices needed?

Answer: Eight

Under the shelter, Kelly and PJ make jokes about the items in the sacrificial chamber while Evan stands by. The three of them are quickly found by the town hall custodian, Ken, who watched them descend down the ladder earlier, and he tells them to get back to the rest of the waiting townsfolk. The kids prank him though; PJ locks the door behind them, trapping Ken inside before they all head out. Evan stays back and tries to break the door open, but the lock holds fast. He can only stand by and listen as something emerges from the chute inside and claims Ken.

At Ruth's, Tom and Bechir listen as the wind outside dies completely. Tom sees that Ruth is still alive, having only been nicked by the bullet, and he yells at an incredulous Bechir to get her help.

At the shelter, the lights come back on and Wyck and Patricia open the door, allowing everyone to leave. They head upstairs to find the island calm, and they realize that Tom must've done what he set out to do.

At the door to the sacrificial shelter, Evan hears a lock unlatch. Letting himself inside for a moment, he finds the room empty and the cellar doors ajar. He leaves uneasy.

As the sun rises on Widow's Bay, the townspeople take stock of the damages but find a sense of calm. Tom, heading out to the harbor, throws Frances' brooch out to the sea while Evan waits in their vehicle. As he gets back to the car, the bell at the church tolls eight times.
