Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who, of these, was the only Warren child to survive the escape attempt from Widow's Bay back in 1702?

Answer: Frances

Shortly after embarking from Widow's Bay in a rowboat in the year 1702, Sarah Warren and her step-children attempted to paddle out to a merchant vessel bound for the mainland, eager to escape Richard's clutches and the island's supposed curse. What waited for them, however, was a thick fog, and by the time the sun rose, they couldn't see where they were going.

That was when the children started becoming afflicted with all manner of maladies-- coughing blood, going blind. And worse yet, the boat started to keel in an unnatural series of waves, threatening to tip them overboard. Frances, the youngest girl, would tip out of the boat, and while Sarah tried to get back to her, failing, she tossed out a crate. It would allow Frances to survive the storm but the others would perish.
2. In the present day, who convinces Tom that he needs to sound the emergency sirens?

Answer: Patricia

In the present day, a storm makes landfall in Widow's Bay at a poor moment for everyone. Tom and Patricia, watching from town hall, ponder whether or not it's the right time to sound the alarms; the thunderheads are just as unnatural as the Storm of 1786. Soon, the power starts to flicker. Tom, dejected by the situation, calls in to the docks to discover that they've lost contact with the mainland about twenty minutes prior.

If they sound the siren, Tom fears, the word will get out that it's a bad place for the tourists on the island to visit, and all of his work will be for nothing. This said, everyone needs to get into the shelters. There's no way around it. It's enough for Tom to get angry.
3. Patricia is able to determine that Frances Fisher is actually Frances Warren due in part to which of these physical features?

Answer: A missing finger

And so Tom has a bit of a tantrum, kicking some of his office furniture around before attempting to pull a massive portrait of the wall and smash it. He ends up under the portrait, somehow, and needs to be rescued. That's when Patricia notices something and rushes off.

Rosemary is the one who tries to help first, attempting to lift the portrait off Tom but flaring her own sciatica up in the process. It takes Kenny, the janitor, to move the painting.

What Patricia found, though, is an interesting note. According to Sarah Warren's journal, Frances Warren's finger was lost in an accident involving a wagon wheel, and the woman in the portrait is missing the same finger. It would imply that she never made it off the island and, as such, there's a descendant past Richard who may still be on the island, being part of the bloodline of Frances Fisher (nee Warren).
4. As the emergency sirens begin to sound in Widow's Bay, what is Bechir trying to do?

Answer: Get off the island

Tom is demotivated, to say the least, when he discovers the likelihood that there are further descendants in the Warren family because, per the curse, none of them can remain alive. Patricia notes it would be helpful to untangle the genealogy in any case, even if it's four hundred years of records, because it will get them closer to the truth, and fortunately, Rosemary already has a significant amount of that info already on-hand. This said, it's hard to say what they should do. He calls the harbormaster's office and tells them to activate the siren.

Sheriff Bechir and Chelle, meanwhile, wait at the harbor, hoping that the ferry might arrive (though Chelle isn't interested in getting on one). While Bechir knows that his wife can't have birth on the island due to the risk of the curse, she's not willing to risk the storm. Naturally, that's when the sirens sound.

Wyck, watching from his vehicle nearby, spots Bechir grabbing as many jerry cans as he can from the dock office and heads in to reason with him. Even if he manages to refuel the boat he intends to steal, there's no way he'll make it to the mainland alive. It's a hard pill to swallow for the fate of his family.
5. It doesn't take long, after the storm starts, for Tom to discover that which of these poses a problem for the emergency shelters?

Answer: The generator

As Widow's Bay closes down and descends into the expansive shelters just underfoot, the town hall staff watches on. Tom attempts a bit of damage control, claiming that the nor'easter passing through is probably also hitting Martha's Vineyard, but he stops when Evan arrives, asking him to stay downstairs to ride this one out.

Patricia indicates that there's an issue though-- the generator that's meant to power the shelter needs a new starter, and the only real solution is to take the one from the lighthouse. When Tom calls Garrett, the lighthouse keeper, to try and secure this, it's a fruitless effort. It's why Tom goes out into the storm, alone, to retrieve it.

As Tom departs, Bechir and Chelle arrive at town hall. Wyck follows close behind.
6. When Tom arrives at the lighthouse, where is Garrett, the lighthouse keeper?

Answer: At town hall

When Wyck arrives at town hall, he sees the mess that Tom's made for himself in the office, locating Sarah's journal on the floor next to the portrait. Rosemary, meanwhile, goes through her desk for some cigarettes when Wyck finds her, asking her to dig into the bloodline per Sarah's journal independently of the others' earlier idea.

Out in the darkness, Tom arrives at the lighthouse in the worst possible conditions, pulling up as his radio appears to turn on all on its own. He gets to the gate to find it chained shut, but climbs the fence to get inside, commencing the ascent to the top only to find that Garrett already departed, headed to town hall for the emergency he was beckoned for.

From the deck of the lighthouse, Tom uses his binoculars to find that Garrett is in the window of his office, already there with the starter. He tells him to stay put via walkie-talkie, but Garrett is already committed to getting the item into Tom's hands, and he heads out to meet him. It's then that Tom notices the waterspout forming out at sea.
7. Before Todd O'Connor can make it into the emergency shelter, what happens to him?

Answer: He's pulled into the sky

Tom makes it back to town hall while Garrett is still trying to unlock his bike and he ushers him inside, committed to keeping the lighthouse keeper safe and the starter on the premises. He's fortunate to succeed in this because at the same time, Todd O'Connor, or Shaman, who gave him the psychedelic mushrooms a few days before, arrives in the rain, hauling a great deal of his belongings. It's a bad moment to have arrived; Shaman gets caught in a wind funnel and pulled into the sky.

It's the last to-do before Tom descends into the storm shelter with the others. Patricia has a bit of rough news for him-- Ruth's not with them. She's still at home, alone. Tom promises that he'll make sure she's safe.
8. As it was discovered, Frances Warren was saved by Barnabas Fisher, who found her when he returned from which of these?

Answer: A whaling expedition

Before Tom can get his bearings, Wyck brings him and Patricia back upstairs where Rosemary, having done a bit of digging at Wyck's behest, sits in front of a projector. Though Tom thinks this isn't priority for the time being, the real surprise is that Richard Warren only has one living descendant, and that's enough to pique his interest.

Rosemary suggests that all of the Warren kids died save for one-- Frances-- who made it back to Widow's Bay in the care of Barnabas Fisher, who found her adrift on the way back from a whaling expedition. At 14, he wed her, leaving her with the whaling business and a son upon his death, and Jonathan Fisher would proceed to have numerous kids. Their kids would have many kids (and many of them would die, leading to the town's first Inaugural Swim) and eventually something would stick.
9. The final living descendant of Richard Warren is who of these?

Answer: Ruth

After pointing to many instances in the Warren bloodline where key figures were either killed or determined to be lesbians, Rosemary is able to isolate the right trail to follow. The Warrens became the Fishers who became the Braddocks who became Fitzgeralds...who became Callingtons...and Sullivans...and Longs...and Livingstons... before the timeline reaches Charles and Florence Livingston in the 20th century. It's here where a sole descendant remains. They never had a partner and they never had children, and Rosemary knows this because it's Miss Widow's Bay 1959.

It's Tom's executive assistant-- Ruth.
10. Who, of these, is against the idea of killing Richard Warren's final descendant to stop the curse?

Answer: Patricia

Pondering the new information about Ruth, both Tom and Wyck wonder how long Ruth might have left in her old age; even knowing of any existing conditions could give them insight into how to proceed. Patricia is ashamed of the two for even considering a way through this, even justifying the possibility of murder, but Tom knows what's out there. Wyck reasons that it means a future for everyone on the island; killing Ruth would mean that even Tom's son wouldn't be bound to the island without a choice.

The phone rings and Tom answers it to find a local on the other end of the line, screaming about something before the call cuts out. Realizing that this has to end, after three hundred years, he takes the burden upon himself, heading out into the rain and planning to drive out to Ruth's alone.
